    IMPORTANT: LAN Events have been confirmed 1 hour before I planned on posting this video (of course LOL). 1st LAN Hangzhou, China - 2nd LAN Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - 3rd LAN Stockholm, Sweden. This also means Chinese OW is confirmed and that the 3rd LAN is the only one I got incorrect! I honestly wish I was incorrect about #2, this is a really bad look for Overwatch.
    UPDATE #2: 2 Teams will qualify per region. 2 NA, 2 EMEA, 2 China, 2 Asia

      Also, because LAN #2 will be held in Saudi Arabia, I will not be Co-Streaming the event or making videos on the event. I will not endorse the decision or profit from it by any means, it is a disgrace to the OW community.

      "Highest level execution" my ass.
      The only ones who EVER even attempted to follow this mindset were Koreans and how they basically only play dive with some minor tweaks for years. And I largely believe that is due to Koreans acknowledging that it is probably the most fun meta and very flexible as long as you grind it hard enough.
      NA professional meta gaming ( and honestly most of the rest of the world) does not believe in fun. So you HAVE to force it sometimes.
      Picks/bans/drafts whatever are a necessary evil. Because people always try to optimize the fun out of stuff.

      It isn't just OW, the Saudi Crown Prince loves Video Games so he decided to create the Esports World Cup and then RSA also got the ESports Olympics. They already tried to poach the European LoL League to play their finals in NEOM where thankfully the broadcast talent and many more publicly criticized it so Riot abandoned the idea.
      Saudi Arabia is throwing insane amounts of money
      For reference T1 received 445k USD for winning worlds, but 1.25 Million USD for winning the LoL portion of the Esports World Cup which is nearly 3 times that
      Dota2 is probably the only game where the Prize Pool at the International event TI is bigger than at that game's portion at the Esports World Cup

    Damn, the Saudi news hit me in the gut. I'm a bi girl considering going pro, so it's already bad enough for me, but I've competed in CAH and just thinking about how some of the trans people I've met there would have to feel about that. It's so sad to see how this country is consuming more and more of the pro OW scene.
    I have thoughts on other things you mentioned as well, but that really killed all interest in discussing that right now. Well, maybe I can tell myself I wouldn't be in the financial situation to go pro anyway, lol. And who knows, maybe things will change for the better with time, when it would actually be relevant to me, but right now the trend is quite clear.
    Well, you asked for something positive, so I'll do it anyway: Really hoping for CR skins, I feel like my team is the only EU team rooting for them every time (we may or may not play a little bit of Ball ourselves, and I may or may not be a big Lip fan as a hitscan player). It's also going to be fun being able to catch more of their matches, and the tournament structure seems good.

    2 slots for Asia again, and my country(Korea) has to step on our Asian counterparts to qualify. I actually think Blizzard worries the OW scene will become like LOL, where East Asia dominate the scene to the point western viewership suffers. But man, is it quite unfair.

    • @Ocie_eSports
      @Ocie_eSports  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      Asia definitely deserves 3 slots, and they need to revert the WDG Korea LAN so Japan and Pacific can fly some teams down to compete. Super dissapointing they changed things for the worse and didn't add T2 for Korea or anywhere else.

    • @nekogami87
      @nekogami87 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Ocie_eSports I have no proof of that, but I think that it's WDG that has no interest in doing that (at least not how face it does it ATM)
      For the regions, yeah I feel like they really want to avoid the KR hegemony by forcing their talent to be import, raising the overall level little by little.
      Especially Japan which somehow has a big viewership in the region. Ideally over time, id like to have a KR, CN, Japan, Pacific region.
      Which with na and EMEA brings us to 12 teams in 3 brackets.
      But I don't see that happen before OW becomes a tier 1 eSports again and can host their own event, cause right now they are limited with the time they can spend on each event (just look at how abruptly Stockholm ended)

    Your point at 4:30 is both a great insight and a super important thing to remember; teams are playing to win, not neccisarily to have fun. Banning the OP pick of the patch also bans said pick for YOUR team too, and if you guys have scrimmed every game with a mauga, you probably don't want to go banning it.
    Unrelated to that, I think the whole "if you ban a champ then the rest of the role can't be banned", is actually really interesting but won't be good from a broadcasting perspective. Its a very interesting metagame balancing whether you want to ban a specific hero or to protect an entire role, BUT i don't think that the extra metagame is intuitive or very interesting to watch for the vast majority of viewers. Maybe a more simplified system of banning a single hero and then protecting a single hero would be better an a lot more intuitive for viewers.
    Great video

    Another great vid Ocie loving your constant contribution to the community ❤ - I think the 2025 season is going to be extremely comparable in terms of viewer experience and community to OWL which is extremely exciting, one of the best factors among all of this change is the communication and open-mindedness that OWCS staff are showcasing going forward, as opposed to being silent and refusing any input. On note about Riyadh, it is a huge shame as the EWC was extremely entertaining Overwatch, and the LAN event itself looked really well organised and streamlined, a fun experience to be had, however with such laws and culture it can be really restricting for many groups despite being a great country besides that, with great ability to setup and run esports events, and clearly with the budget to do so. These events should be set up not only for viewership and fan experience, but for player experience as well, and launching one in Riyadh is a money move more than a move for either players or fans, which as unfortunate as it is, is understandable as at the end of the day the OWCS is a business that sells esports entertainment.

    10:37 why not combine all 6 by category? Either a 2-2-2 with Control/Clash, Escort/Hybrid, and Push/Flash, or rather a 3-3 with Control/Flash/Clash and Push/Hybrid/Escort, considering the 3-3 would still give each role a category specific to what type of gamemode it is (Capture Point vs Cart/Bot Movement), and if that's too short a pool, you can use the 2-2-2 to give less of the consolidated categories (although still being somewhat together, Flipping Points, Cart/Push, and then just an Etc category) but more of a pool to pick from. Is it based solely off map number?

If Team Liquid, C9, or even SSG are willing to pay players and staff more, I feel that's better than the pure brand value of NRG. That also comes from someone who has participated in the scene and seen how low salaries are, so I sympathize with players who put in insane hours just to get minimum wage or even lower.

    If adding hero bans is what keeps OCS alive then I'm all for it, even if it leads to lower level games at least at the start as teams get used to it. I just hope peoples main takeaway from this isn't just "oh OW is just copying Marvel Rivals, game bad". OW has really been the only hero shooter on the market especially recently so having competent competition (sorry paladins) should lead to the betterment of both games.

    I'm no lawyer but I would imagine hero bans being implemented is desirable both for any of the franchise teams in the league and for Blizzard. Whatever effect the most recent balance patch has leading into league competition could influence the outcome given the preferences for each team. So hero bans might absolve Blizzard's development team of any liability in regards to potential accusations of favoritism or fixing.

The losing team after 1st map gets the 1st ban, so the other team has plenty of chances after 1st map. With the bans based on players, I partially agree, I'm waiting to see how it plays out, but it's a huge problem for specialists for sure.

    I am honestly very sceptical that the hero ban system will had much diversity on the long run. Heroes that are very good in very specific circumstances, such as on certain map, certain team comps or against certain heroes will probably completely fade out of the meta, making the overall hero pool smaller, and the uncertainty the system brings will probably incentivise the players to train a pool of more generalist heroes they are already experienced on, rather than trying out out there stuffs, which may slow down meta development a lot. If you already have to invest most of your time to train on 6 tanks instead of 3 or 4 for the older metas, you will very likely not waste any more time practicing the rest of the tank roster. Basically heroes such as doomfist, Ball, Rein, Zarya, Junkerqueen, Pharah, Symmetra, Sombra, Soldier, Torbjorn, Echo, Mercy, Illari, Lifeweaver and zen are at risk as completely vanishing from competitive play in favor of the usual meta heroes because they will get ban in situations that will be too much in their favour and are rarely viable outside of them. I don't really understand why this system gets implemented now, beside the Juno meta we have seen very diverse and map specific comps lately and the heroes favoured by the ban system are the generalists that were already very prevalent in the current meta. While this system might have made sense during goats or double shield, in the current meta it feels anachronistic to me

    I GREATLY prefer larger map pools. Does any viewer prefer EVERY first map being the same for an entire tournament? I get that more maps leads to mismatches in practice time. 2 teams can have practiced entirely different map pools potentially increasing one-sided games, but I would prefer 10 unique one-sided games, to 10 close illios games. Even that is conceding that it WOULD lead to stomps, it could even diversify strategies as teams need to develop an overall style and not min/max each map.

    Overwatch could have easily implemented a simple 2-2 hero ban system at the start of each map, similar to other games that use this mechanic effectively. Regarding the idea of punishing teams that rely heavily on specific heroes or strategies, I believe that if you're in the professional scene, you should have the versatility to adapt. For example, DPS players in the pro scene should have a solid understanding of every DPS hero on the roster and be able to perform proficiently with any of them when needed.
    In my opinion, a hero ban system not only separates the truly skilled and adaptable players from those relying on a limited hero pool but also gives flexible teams the recognition they deserve. It could reward creativity and highlight teams willing to think outside the box rather than sticking rigidly to what's meta.

I won't be watching or supporting it, the most I'll be doing is just checking results, and then I can go back to my EU tournament in Sweden again.
      In an ideal world, the fact that the tournament is in Riyadh might mean it gets a far lower turnout + more backlash than the others, incentivizing Blizz to try to distance themselves after this year, but unfortunately I think Saudi will just keep throwing money at the wall until it sticks.

    Is it even possible for people who publicly hold an identity that is infringed upon by SA government to travel to the event if they (and yes I know this is horrible and not possible for some people) hide it or don’t show it while they are in the country? Again, an awful thing to consider, but I’m wondering if it’s even an option? Or is it that if you’re public on social media (for example) about your identity you just can’t go because it’s widely accessible public knowledge and that can be used against you

    • @Ocie_eSports
      @Ocie_eSports  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      For certain people it's more dangerous than others. For people of different sexualities, the best thing you can do is never tell anyone during your trip about your sexuality and never stay in a hotel room with someone in a way that might look suspicious. You might also want a burner phone if your main phone has pictures of a relationship that could be perceived as gay or queer.
      For trans people you are basically screwed. You need to act as the gender on your official identification. For trans people that have changed their official gender, this may be very difficult if they do not pass well. This could end with them being deported or worse. For me, I haven't been able to change my legal gender yet, so I'd need to 'pretend' to be a man and dress that way. That is a bit of a problem though because for many trans people, biology kinda changes due to meds....so you need to wear certain under-clothing that, if you are caught wearing (even in a security pat down) could get you in trouble.
      Also, for high profile players and content creators (I am a good example) social media presence puts you at risk. It would be easier to go undercover as a fan than keep down low as a creator or player. I've had people tell me I'd probably die if I went to Saudi (LOL) although my guess is that I'd most likely end up deported. It's a tough subject and VERY messy.
