    Bro….$16/hr….two kids…..I remember when I made $16/hr in 2016 with no kids and it was one of the hardest struggles if my life.

    I get it. Rent is getting harder to pay every month for us too. We’re stuck. My husband can’t work a second job because of his work schedule, and if I was to work, the money I’d make would go to daycare. It’s so frustrating!

    I'm impressed he's only making $16 an hour and still able to support a wife and two kids. After he gets a new job with better pay, hopefully they can avoid lifestyle inflation.

      @@bluesky5384 but you also can't ignore the fact that he put himself in that situation. If you think $16 an hour isn't enough to raise a family, you shouldn't have started a family to begin with. I say that as someone who had a child young and had to learn the hard way. It wasn't a good experience and if I had the chance to do it again, I would have made better choices.

      @@Pinkielover considering the median individual income is a little over $15 in Arizona, I think your statement is skewed by your own personal bias. That's still a liveable wage regardless. My state is significantly more expensive than Arizona (especially for housing) and it's feasible to live on $10/hour.

    I had an income issue. My wife and I were just making enough to get by so I started searching for jobs that pay with no college education. Was working in a warehouse for $21/hr. Then decided to get my CDL now I make $95k/yr driving a truck and home everyday. Work is hard but you will reap the rewards if you just put in the effort.

    To everyone going after Ken for mentioning Wal-Mart: He's referring to their national headquarters being in that area. That's why he said Bentonville, Arkansas. Not a normal "Walmart" job. Walmart is still bigger than Amazon so getting a corporate job at national headquarters could be a good paying option in his local area.

    This will come to a head eventually. Insane housing prices and insane rent prices will just force people to live at home indefinitely. It doesn’t come from entitlement, it comes from necessity. 500k for the median house now.

      Not in Tennessee, they are up $75k but still way under $500k , 200 will get a decent house , $350 will get you a really nice house. People seem to forget they can move...

It was shocking to see how much it cost to do that, it was equally as shocking to see how much it cost to live in a 17 to 20 ft travel trailer. I quickly realized that buying a condo would be cheaper and easier in long run.

    I'll never understand why people get married and have kids at such a young age. If that's what people want to do, that's their prerogative. But I personally feel like those are major life events, and your career financial situation should be taken into consideration before those decisions. The idea is to work smarter, not harder. I wish this young kid all the best!

    I'll end it if I ever have to work two jobs . One should be enough . That's how it was in the 60s one man going to work . Buys a house a car ,goes on vacations and pays for his kids education off of one man's salary .working a normal job

    Guy is smart. He knows he needs more money and the current job will never provide it. It sucks working and not having enough money to live. It sucks when you don't have a job and are broke, but it sucks way more when you are working every day and are still broke. At least he realizes this early and is planning ahead. Some people get stuck and work there forever.

      Im sure he is referring to corporate level positions. Either internally or for a vendor. Any of the vendors of Walmart are required to have an office here. Plenty of jobs to be had in $45-50k range

    I live in Arkansas as well and Rogers/Fayetteville area are the most expensive areas….. why not move to say the Conway area where it’s cheaper, still fairly nice, and 30 minute drive to Little Rock? There are several publishing companies there - granted they’re smaller and maybe not as well known. Get your foot in the door somewhere, build your resume, then move when you can afford it. But definitely get another job. People act like they are stuck but don’t want to work a temporary second job to get unstuck 🙄

      Plus paying people more would actually contribute to the inflation you're seeing. You'd figure that folks would have discovered that injecting more dollars into the system does not in fact create more goods and services to spend those dollars on.

    And this is why the wheels are going to come off the entire system before long. When you have an entire swathe of the workforce living on crumbs the top get there legs cut off and the reset happens.
    Soft or hard reset is the only question.

      I’m single with zero debt with around $1200/mo. total living expenses in an upper middle class area.
      Many of you don’t understand how powerful and flexible being debt free can be.

    Get into the Low Voltage industry. Security alarms, fire alarms, access control, cameras….. people are hiring like CRAZY for this industry and it’s pays well quickly if you put the time in.

    I live in Los Angeles…when I hear someone say they can’t afford rent and it follows with the word Arkansas, I laugh to myself. Not judging anyone just wondering what rent is in any part of Arkansas

      The wages in Arkansas is much lower which makes it harder to afford rent. There are people making $11 hr there.

      @@missdesireindependance5194 i understand but across the board standard of living is still considerably different in CA. So $11 isn’t much, doesn’t matter where you live but if someone took 50% of their income they could still pay rent in Arkansas at $11/hr….50% in Los Angeles even at $20/hr you couldn’t get into a 2 bedroom, not to mention difference of gas prices and other things.
      Again, not stating that he isn’t going to have a hard time I’m simply implying he has a much easier route to make this change than say someone in a different state (was using CA) as an example. Fact that I heard him mention save, retirement etc that would never even come close to possible here

    I WISH I made $16/hour. I make $12.50/hour at a fast food place & $11.20/hour at a daycare (I can't drive, so taxi Uber Lyft & food delivery is out of the question).

    So buy a multiplex live in one unit and rent out the rest. If the tenants have a signed lease you can use that as income to qualify for the mortgage.

    you know what doesn't go up? a fixed rate mortgage. Had one since 2005 and it is still within $100 monthly as what it was back then. It actually went down slightly this year. I only owe $8500 on it now and making minimum payments now until it runs out. My property taxes are $2200 a year so that's all I'll have to worry about paying after the house is paid off.

    I have one critique to make to this show. Lots of shaming. Like, these people are calling in to get help and sometimes it feels really rough. There are so many reasons people get stuck and strong-arming it every episode doesn't always inspire people. Love you guys though. No hard feelings.

    He has a confidence issue - he stated he had been unemployed and seemed grateful to have a job, but also seems to be complacent due to fear. Experienced it myself. As soon as you get a job, especially if its not ideal, be working on getting the next. He needs to get his partner to be sending out his CV and doing online applications for him if she is at home with a child, or doing it himself when he is off work.

    Arkansas is one of the poorest states in the country. It is not an upcoming area. Get the heck out of Arkansas and move to a better state and larger city with more opportunities in the field you are interested in.
    Learn a skill and focus on using that skill to get a job that pays more. Is this guy even looking, someone below mentioned Fedex pays $21. That's 25% more by just applying for a job in a different field.

      Northwest Arkansas is nothing like the rest of the state. Bentonville/Rogers, which is were the caller is from, is one of the wealthiest cities in the state. With Walmart, Tyson, and JB Hunt, there are plenty of opportunities to make good money here.

      I'm also from Rogers, AR, and this area is actually quite affluent compared to the rest of the state. Lots of growth and opportunity here with thousands moving to the area every year. He's not kidding when he says it's one of the fastest growing areas in the country. He just needs some connections to the industry he's interested in because I guarantee he could pursue it here without moving.

    This kind of episode is why I watch this show. I am glad they help the wealthy as well, but I want to see lives transformed. Just listened to a call of someone trying decide if he should make 170k or 210k per year and the advice was good, but not the same effect as here where if this caller uses this knowledge and starts moving his whole family’s life is going to radically change for the better.

      @@PaulEEish But "taxes, maintenance, insurance, hidden costs" are already built into the rent, so tenants are ultimately paying for them (unless there are rent price controls, then I guess landlords will find it tougher to pass on the costs to tenants).

      @@rooster5755 I was a union carpenter in Montana even at a refinery which is big money you'd make around 35 36 an hour, laborers would make less than that. I don't think very many sign holders make that much money maybe in high cost of living places like California or new York or Colorado but even at that I doubt. My brother in law was making mid 30s as a welder in Colorado as a veteran with management experience and 10 years of experience. If you're making 32 an hour holding a sign that's really good.

    My rent keeps going up every year. I make 19.25$ and yet my rent is 1975$ but that doesn’t include all the utilities that I also have to pay. Which is all of them. And it can come up to 24-25, give or take. With jobs not paying higher wages every year. Gas has gone up. Food has gone up. And don’t get me started on my other bills that’s not related to my rent.

    As someone who lives in Northwest Arkansas, DON'T MOVE out of state. This place is growing faster than you can even believe, and while yes it may seem that rents are going up, there is so much job opportunity here and companies moving from all over the country to be in this area. I would plant your roots even firmer into NWA and stay put. Definitely get a different job paying more than $16/hr, even if it's only somewhat related to publishing. I would pivot into doing graphic design since there are a lot of corporate type jobs here that are looking for designers and that's kind of in the same vein as publishing.

      I have an uncle that lives in Rogers. He was moved there back in like 2012 or around then because he worked for Kraft foods and they transferred him over. It’s insane how much it’s grown in the decade that I’ve been visiting up there. There was barely anything around the pinnacle hills area when he moved there and now it’s full of commercial and residential. I don’t visit but like once a year and every time I go, there is so much that I haven’t seen that’s new. There are many opportunities in that area.

    I think Ken should have also said that the caller shouldn't go into debt to get a degree in publishing. It is more beneficial, even though it might be hard, especially for someone who has a family and no special job skillset to earn a lot to afford college if scholarships are unavailable.

    Minimum wage in Arkansas is $11 an hour hes make 16 Which is pretty average for the area he's in

      UM, teachers make 50 to 75 per hour! Did you forget they only work 180 days a year? Some are way overpaid and lazy AF.
