I am a personal friend of GC Cameron who sang this when he was with the Spinners. Talked with him yesterday and to all his fans let me say he is doing fine and living in Mississippi. He will be 69 this year and still sounds as good, if not better, than in 1970!! Hopefully you saw him during the five plus years he was with the Temptations. I can hear his voice as I listen to this great instrumental!!
Ron,I'm a BIG fan of G.C Cameron..... I read years ago his cousin was/is the Late great Phillipe Wynn, former lead singer of the Spinners . Is this true or another Urban Myth ??
Jamerson plays licks that would never occur to other bass players. So many times during this song I scream “ WHAT!!! NOBODY DOES THIS!” The only reason a person would not agree that he’s the greatest bass player that ever walked the earth is (A): you have no idea who he is or (B): you just don’t get it and you never will! Who’s better than Jamerson? I dare you to drop a name! But don’t feel bad. There hasn’t been a better bass player since 1960. NOBODY understands that instrument better than he does. He created the “ Bass language “ that all future bassist use till this day. He’s the father of the fender baby. After the jazz era, he took the bass into the world of new music. No diss to the jazz greats that came before him but not many of them were not considered when the new music came ( 60s 70s). Jamerson could make your song a hit for sure and all producers knew it. He’s THE absolute master of the bass! On this song he never plays a bar the same way twice. That’s not easy! Most bass players play it safe. The bass is the only instrument that bad note is extremely noticeable. Throws everything off. Jamerson didn’t give a fk. And out of over 100 studio records, I may remember 2 bad notes. Darling Dear- Bernadette- the first 5 on Marvin’s WGO. The courage and bravery to play those difficult passes.... Nobody could do it. His balls were huge! Check him out on these 2 changes 1:30 and 2:23. WHAT?
Its a doggone SHAME the Funk brothers never got their due in their prime, but it's never too late to spread the word to the upcoming generation that this is REAL music!
O.M.G.!!!!!!!! thanks for posting. I'm not a very good singer but, it's fun to try to sing smoky's part of this classic MOTOWN song. I didn't know they had a CD of this kind. thank you again.
This track is available on disc two of the Deluxe Edition of the "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" soundtrack. That set has got a bunch of other great instrumental versions of Motown classics.
Was lucky enough to tour Hitsville. Had just been at Rock Hall Of Fame. They have nothing on this place. Man, standing in that studio. Had to keep it together. Unreal..
James Jamerson is indeed playing the bass on this track. Other musicians include Dennis Coffey and Robert White on guitar, Jack Ashford on tambourine and Pistol Allen on the drums. (Although Stevie Wonder overdubbed a second drum part that he played himself after he couldn't quite get the rhythm he wanted out of Allen.)
Dennis Coffey...that does sound like his thumbprint on the lead...stuff like this is what fascinates me about music...who played or produced what, even down to the actual brand and model of instruments used. Attention to detail like that is why TRUE music died in the ears of the general record buying public...nobody reads credits anymore and entirely too many ‘musicians’ today neither know nor care about the details. Much respect to y’all for your input.
WONDERFUL idea at Motown to put out all the great songs on Karoke CD's (17 or 18 volumes in the series) Usually 8 tracks by all different artists or bands, and then the same 8 tracks without the lead vocal... Absolutely fantastic. It's fantastic to hear the incredible musicianship of the guys in the studios... Bought myself the whole series but they're a bit pricey these days... The series is : "Motown Original Artist Karaoke: I Just Want to Celebrate"
Uriel Jones played drums on it. Stevie didn't play a thing, just produced it with Lee Garrett as co-producer. Fun fact: this was recorded in 1969 (right before Stevie turned 19) but Berry put it on the shelf for a year.
Hmm Timmy I thought I read an interview by Dennis Coffey in Wax Poetics saying that as Stevie was producing the track Uriel Jones was not getting the feel he was hearing on drums so he took over.
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you hurt me It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man I'm sitting all alone by the telephone Waiting for your call when you don't call at all It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you play with my emotions It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man You're like a child at play on a sunny day But you play with love and then you throw it away Why do you use me try to confuse me How can you stand to be so cruel Why don't you free me from this prison Where I serve my time as your fool It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you hurt me It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man I try to stay with you show you love so true But you won't appreciate the love we try to make Oh, it's-a got to be a shame Got to be a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man Oh, it's a shame (sha-ame), the way you hurt me It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man You've got my heart in chains and I must complain I just can't be content oh, look at (unintelligible

Its a doggone SHAME the Funk brothers never got their due in their prime, but it's never too late to spread the word to the upcoming generation that this is REAL music!
+marknorthwest93 yes!!!
Supposedly, they're responsible for more number 1 hits than the Beatles. Basically, all the Motown hits were played by them.
The Spinners were fantastic but this version with the Funk Bros. is super Funk. Right in their groove - I love anything Funk Bros.
+Marvin Vader me too!!!
Genius by The Funk Brosl!! Gave me the chills.
O.M.G.!!!!!!!! thanks for posting. I'm not a very good singer but, it's fun to try to sing smoky's part of this classic MOTOWN song. I didn't know they had a CD of this kind. thank you again.

This is AWESOME! Thanks so much for posting.
Jamerson Killed it! They need to name a brand of bass guitar after him!

thought it was Uriel he couldnt get the rhythm out of thus just Stevie playing by himself never knew Dennis played on here thought that was a clavinet
You are correct, Robert White on his Gibson L-5 and Dennis Coffey on his Gibson Firebird.

@@DJGary0910 Hmm... I see.

It is a gentle song very ear

Any Motown experts around here? Who's the guy with the friendly yet wistful voice who sings the F# to D#, F to C# on "Sha-ame, ooh-ooh"??
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you hurt me
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
I'm sitting all alone by the telephone
Waiting for your call when you don't call at all
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you play with my emotions
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
You're like a child at play on a sunny day
But you play with love and then you throw it away
Why do you use me try to confuse me
How can you stand to be so cruel
Why don't you free me from this prison
Where I serve my time as your fool
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you hurt me
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
I try to stay with you show you love so true
But you won't appreciate the love we try to make
Oh, it's-a got to be a shame
Got to be a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
Oh, it's a shame (sha-ame), the way you hurt me
It's a shame (sha-ame), the way you mess around with your man
You've got my heart in chains and I must complain
I just can't be content oh, look at (unintelligible
Eddie Willis on guitar
