My take on it is, if you can afford it, and you want a little conversation starter when you bring it around. Go for it. Me, I can’t even afford it, but if I can I always go for the standard SS. Classics are always the way to go ahaha. Though if you do get the ceramic, reselling would be easier since the bezel is technically scratch resistant But I don’t but to resell anyway. Always for keeps 😅
Certainly a standout watch. Not something you can unsee on someone's wrist. From the practical point of view I wonder if the microbezels on the dial might benefit from being medium grey instead of black. It wouldn't be as striking, but now they seem to overpower the hands to my eyes, and with medium grey the hands might stand out better.
This is such an amazing watch can’t wait to get mine, now I actually like the dial text which some may not agree with but the movement is phenomenal! Such a cool smooth looking watch
I have no use in my day to day life for a chronograph but the design of this watch is astounding beautiful. Rolex’s manufactured scarcity is a frustrating thing when it comes to stainless steel sports watches. Charging higher price’s for a quality product I can deal with but having to wait for years to get one I do not like.
The column wheel will make the pusher feel clickier and more "premium", but the jerkiness of the chronograph seconds hand is a function of using a horizontal/vertical clutch.
Nice video, Anthony. Not easy to get near to these pieces at the moment.. Just a point of clarification, a column wheel really does not have much of an effect on the "jumpiness" at the start of a chronograph function.. It primarily affects the smoothness and lightness of the pusher operation.. A vertical (vs horizontal) clutch, however, is where you will get a smoother (less "jumpy") chronograph start. I see a lot of collectors obsess over column wheels because they think they will be spare a jumpy chronograph hand only to be disappointed. Keep the content coming, buddy. Love your videos.
Thank you Darren, I know better. I shoot these videos in one take and it doesn't always register what comes out of my mouth. Thank you for calling that out and for the support!
My Local AD said mine should be in June 2021. I’m quite certain she will deliver. She’s procured other hard to get models for me and always comes through. Fingers crossed!
Very good review, nothing has been forgotten! 👍 This version of the dayto is the Best ever made: perfect size , thickness, look (sport and readable), ceramic+platinium layer engraved , mouvement, clasp and X factor (white gold, contraste, polishing and 904L just provide a perfect visual effect very balanced). For me it s one of the Best looking chrono ever made. And I own many 😉
The new Daytonas are beautiful. I think I like the black dial over the white dial. But hey.....either one is amazing. I've never purchased a Daytona, I really need a date window.
good review, well done. i dont see the point in chronos, to each his own though. nice piece but i say for daily wearer save your cash and get a sub or gmt, at least they have the date. 7:50 no see through caseback, which is customary rolex .. sigh .. i wish they would move with the times and get sapphire case backs. this malarky of 'it reduces waterproofness' is just that, malarky. if omega can do a diver that has 1200m wr with a display back, plo prof, then rolex can do it for a sub with 300m wr.
I'm new to the Daytona, but what do you mean by the stainless steel is the one to have. By stainless steel you mean the Rolex Daytona 116500LN? Or are there 2 versions of this one?
Actually, the earlier models had Valjoux, not ETA movements, but I think that is what you meant. The shield crest with the fancy R stamped in the ebauche.
It’s crazy that this is one is more expensive than the two tone gold Daytona, but this one is the one, the icon, plus future resale value will be higher/quicker to sell
Iconic watch the Daytona! Pre zeniths had valjoux 72, 72b or 727 and Daytona appeared on the dial by mid 1960's. Not trying to school you, I'm just a fellow collector of Daytonas. Enjoyed your video 👌🏻
I appreciate the insight. I equate valjoux and ETA since they are the same family now. I knew it was pre 7750 but not sure which cal. Thanks for the lesson and for watching!
J., the column wheel design does not do what you stated. It proveides a more tactile feel to the actuation of the pushers. A vertical clutch will prevent the jumping when starting then stopping and the immediately starting again the chronograph. Does the 4130 have a vertical clutch?
Thanks, I know better. I shoot videos in one take and it doesn't always register what comes out of my mouth. I appreciate your note. It didn't occur to me what I said. As for the 4130, yes it has a vertical clutch.
A great video. Thanks. Some people love the new Daytona some don't. I am not personally thrilled. But, we can all appreciate the syle of the Daytona. It is, for me, the pinnicle Rolex. It maybe stylish to bash a Daytona. The number don't agree..
Great watch...I have other chronographs and use them all the time..from timing the short cooking of various items, doing backwashes on pools and many other activities. They are as good as cash and you can at a minimum get your money back and more than likely more for this Daytona.
Hi Tony, its me Toni! Cant believe you got one daytona... I bought a bavitimer 46mm instead of this cause there wasnt any at the retailer....How did you get hold of one? I´ve been waiting for years and my name isn't close to the top of the list.
It would be a first if someone does an in-depth review comparing the Daytona with the GS Dragon chronograph which Ariel of ablogtowatch speak so highly of. For a start, it has 3 more complications and more decorated with superior finishing not to mention its much longer history. Yet, the Dragon cost a quarter of the Daytona's premium price. This kind of review would indeed be helpful for people who are into high horology beyond branding, but, of course, one need to be very knowledgeable, though it's hard to be in the league of Ariel who has handled tens of millions worth.
I have to admit that the color combination (dial and bezel) looks very attractive. Too bad its too thick for my taste (and way out of my budget 😂). Good job on your review.
I have a 116503. Feel your finger round the crown and the guard, then the pushers. Then, feel the edges. Now, i also have the Jade Dragon SBGC207. If you have one, repeat the same. Now, you can feel the difference between machine made watches and handmade watches. If you want to know what 'sharpness' mean, you compare it with a Grand. Also, my son get rashes wearing the Rolex but not the Grand. Strange!
Very nice watch, no date, good design. I do however prefer a 1960s Speedmaster for its history. Would sell this one or any expensive Rolex straight away to go buy a Speedy 321.
Great review but didn't you have a bunch of issues with your Daytona? It seems like your feelings towards Rolex have shifted again since you Rolex purge videos P1 & P2... What's changed?
Yes, I did. My comment was more related to how the market jumped and I could have sold it for more money now. I do still like these however I prefer other chronos like my Navitimer more. As for what changed, I decided to just buy what I like and forget about price and status. I now have a collection that has several high and low end pieces that I bought solely because I like them. I especially like my Seiko's still. Hopefully it is a sign of maturity...the jury is still out on that haha...
Thanks, nice review. Asset bubble money is chasing this watch. Many other watches I would personally want before getting one of these. Just too under the spotlight and over-hyped. I don't follow the sheeple.
At what point does the Rolex Ponzi scheme collapse/backfire? I bought another Panerai in protest instead of continuing to be insulted by rolex boutiques and dealers. Great watch - but come on...Porsche got it right launching the GT3 manaul touring after all the BS around the 911R.
Panerai simply just can't keep up with Rolex! I used to own Panerai vintage watches, and I all sold them. Rolex is a class of it's own. Ways above Panerai. Rolex remain tool watches though. When it comes to pure luxury watches, nothing can compare to Patek Philippe. Rolex and Patek are the only watches that will maintain or even increase their value. The only other brand that might be able to keep up with those two is Audemars Piguet. That's it.
I used to own the white dial version but couldn’t get on with it so gifted it to my nephew who loves it. My main issue was the legibility of the time. Yes. The time. Just look how busy the dial, bezel and sub dials are. And the thin hands. I was forever angling the dial to catch the light on the hands to see what time it was. The novelty wore off very quickly once I realised reading the time was problematic. Plus I need to know the date so I just stick with my workhorse Submariner. The only time you use the chrono is to see if it still works. I’ve tried platinum too but didn’t like the colour scheme. So here’s an ex owner throwing in the one negative review in the Universe.

Absolutely. Don't understand the hype over vintage rollies. The italians (mondani) made it cool and trendy to get "vintage" and the public bought it. I think the modern rolex is just perfection. Who wants plastic crystals? Flimsy bracelets, scratched up, faded aluminun bezels. I had all of them...flipped for newer rolex pieces. BTW, modern Grand Seikos are fantastic pieces.

It adds to the brands cache as an exclusive item, holds resale values high and ensures that all units are sold at or above retail price.
