Absolutely right. And the fact that Garvey doesn't even acknowledge the possibility of that fact means that, unlike Reggie, HE has yet to be completely honest about that play.

Saw Garvey play 3rd a few times at Dodger Stadium. Wild arm 3rd baseman is an understatement. It was a miracle if he threw it in the dugout. Switched to first and the rest is history.
Garvey’s de-emphasizing the way Russell handled the ball to try to coax a double play... Gamesmanship cuts a lot of ways... I remember watching Jackson’s move when it happened and thought, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander...”
You are absolutely correct! I saw that game and it's very obvious that the glove was turned down to release the ball in a way to be easily picked up for an easy double play. Reggie Jackson was smart enough to thwart their illegal play. He had that Reggie grin as he redirected the path of the ball with his hip. I talk about that play often when the subject of great baseball plays comes up. It was quick thinking. What a great move!!!!! Thanks for the memories, Mr. Jackson!!!!!
It's funny, if you watch the play, Russell could have easily tagged the runner on 2nd, then stepped on 2nd for the double play, never needing to throw to 1st.
10mmguy That was no “short hop.” Garvey is being dishonest. Russell purposely dropped the ball to try to get a double play and Reggie made him pay for it.
That entire Cey, Russel, Lopes, Garvey infield should be inducted as a unit. Starting for 8.5 years together. I remember we Dodger Fans would fill out Tons of All Star ballots to get our guys into the All Star Game. So much so that one year the National League team simply started this Dodger infield as a unit to begin the All Star Game. Don’t remember which year that was. Maybe 1979 or ‘80?
He's probably more like 5'8 1/2 or 5'9. I saw him in person and he is fairly short. Stout, but short. He generated his power from his legs and those Popeye for arms. Great player and interesting to see him in person. I think Ron Cey was fairly short as well.
Yeah, "baseball card heights" are always given with a one inch shoe advantage, and sometimes exaggerated even more. Reggie Jackson was always listed at 6 ft, he was maybe 5 ft 10 1/2, probably 5 ft 10, like 5 ft 9 now as an old man.
Russell short hopped the ball my dimpled petunia. He intentionally dropped the ball to induce a double play. Reggie saw that and he said, two can play that game.
Jackson only shifted maybe 2 inches at the most, but the bottom line is it was a legal play because it was very subtle and he wasn't out of the baseline. A smart play.
I hated the Yankees even more after that play... (Fact check: I also thought it was the tying run that scored on the play, but it wasn't -- that run ( by Munson) put the Yanks within 1 , to 3-2, but they would go on to tie it , and then win in extra innings Also, Russell didn't "shorthop" it- it hit his glove and fell out. In fact, he may have ILLEGALY dropped it on PURPOSE.)
There was ‘may have’ … Russell was trying the old ‘oopsy’ drop play to coax a dp…. The umps let it slide and Reggie saw that and did his own ‘oopsy’ in response…. That’s the truth.
Understood. Given that logic, you must have really despised the royals after mcrae knocked Willie Randolph into left field. It is what it is. You still gotta win the game as the dodgers fell apart in game 5.

No one mentions that it could have legitimately be ruled an infield fly since runners were on 1st and 2nd base and it was easily catchable. It happened too quick in real time but an umpire conference could have corrected it.
Other than Shoeless Joe and Rose, Garvey is probably the greatest player not to be in the Hall of Fame. I mean, if you are putting the likes of Goose Gossage and Scott Rolen in, you gotta induct Garvey.
Big Dodger fan here....If Bill Russell was a good fielding shortstop, I would believe that he intentionally dropped that line drive. (it was not "short hopped" as Garvey stated) However, Russell was an average fielder who apparently wasn't very smart either. All he had to do was tag a "frozen" Thurmon Munson (who was still lingering around 2nd base) and step on 2nd base for the inning-ending double play! Instead, Russell steps on 2nd base and throws to first. Jackson then sticks his hip out to block the ball and the ball ends up rolling toward the dugout. Munson then scores and Pinella (the batter) ends up in scoring position. Russell's lack of smarts most likely cost the Dodgers the game and perhaps the World Series. From that day on, I never liked Bill Russell. Not only was he a poor fielder, but he wasn't very intelligent either!
I wonder why Garvey claims Russell short hopped the ball? Russell dropped it, probably intentionally. Maybe Russell is wrong about the second base umpire too? And of course if Russell had just tagged Munson, who was standing right there, before touching second base, the throw would have been unnecessary. Face it, Russell just $crewed up the play twice and the Dodgers still blame Jackson.
Talking about Jackson's interference play in '78 WS. It all started with Bill Russell intentionally dropping the ball, and then not tagging Munson, who was standing right in front of him. Just catch the damn ball and make the tag and there's your DP. Reggie had nothing to lose he was out anyways, so why not. And he got away with it because an AL umpire was too chicken sh!t to make the call.
Russell did not short-hop it. He intentionally dropped it (which is illegal), to cause a double play.
Absolutely right. And the fact that Garvey doesn't even acknowledge the possibility of that fact means that, unlike Reggie, HE has yet to be completely honest about that play.

Garvey -- A Michigan State legend ... Go Green !
Jackson's 'lean' was a brilliant play that every good base runner should have also made. Jackson rolled the dice and won.
It helped the Russell screwed the play up twice.

Munson was right there to be tagged. Russell had tunnel vision
Russell was never known for his defense. Or, come to think of it, for his offense either.
Correct. He drop the ball and instead of tagged Munson he decide to do it the hard way.

Interesting story but, he played First Base for the dodgers in 72
He was off by a year. Happens.

I think Garvey is off by a year. In 1973 he had already moved permanently to first. In 1972 he played mostly third, with 3 games at first.
