This is my favorite Castlevania game of all time. I regard it as one of the best games ever alongside Super Metroid, Metal Gear Solid 1 and Half-Life. It's that good.
Based take. Man, Rondo of Blood became my favorite, & it’s clearly the best Castlevania game. Rondo of Blood has replayability, finesse, a great blend of horror and anime, and a killer soundtrack
Having beaten nearly all the Castlevania games (thanks to the inspiration from you and James), I'm playing through them again with a fightstick (arcade stick). It's nothing magical, but there's something a little extra fun about playing these on an arcade stick.
If you overlook the graphics, the remake on PSP is worth a playthrough as well. The Dracula fight is something else. Harder than the original. Rondo of Blood is the best and Dracula X is somewhat sadistic in my opinion.
*Most underrated castlevania is Circle of the Moon imo. The bosses are amazing and challenging. Maybe it's nostalgia, but it's one of the best metroidvania castlevanias ever made
Superman III and Superman IV are my favorites, and also has the best theme music. Castlevania IV 🏯 🏰 is my fav, followed by 2. Who remembers Showbiz and Rock-afire explosion band?
As kids, me and a friend I grew up with were late bloomers to listening to music. We were just video game nerds and only heard what our families played on the stereo involuntarily lol! My sister's Michael Jackson greatest hits collection and the OST to this game my brother burned on a CD were our intro to enjoying music. It was different and badass sounding to us I guess. Didn't actually play the game until YEARS later!
Just played a patched version on this a few weeks ago... I definitely agree that this is one of the best classic Castlevania games.. just wanted to ask if you've watched Castlevania Nocturne (the latest one of Netflix feat. Ricther and Maria) and if you did, what do you think about it? Btw, there are a few areas wherein only Maria can access, but yeah, totally respect that you wanted more challenge than an easier mode, but it's still fun to play her :) P.S. Someone should make a Castlevania hack (any of the classic ones) and mod it with 1HP Mikevania as it's title (can also have 1 hp haha)
You think this is better than Symphony of the Night? PS. I really wish the SNES port of Rondo had just been the original game simply with even nicer colours, proper transparency effects, and some additional parallax background layers in places. It could have been brilliant, rather than the meh version of X it got imo. And the fact Rondo is running in the same 256x224 resolution as SNES [and as SotN too funnily enough] and the PC Engine can't show as many sprites on-screen or per scanline or as many background layers as SNES, etc, means it was all totally within the SNES' capabilities to get a great version of this game. A real dropped ball moment and shame there.
Mike prefers this to Symphony of the Night. I agree with Mike. Symphony of the Night, while fun, doesn't capture the essence of the Castlevania experience. Rondo of Blood on the other hand, perfectly does that. Personally I consider the Metroidvania entries to be "alternative", to the traditional entries.
He probably feels the same way I do about it. While I love the rpg aspects of symphony of the night (would say it's at the top of my list also) those same aspects make it feel like a completely different game. That isn't even mentioning the absurdly easy difficulty of symphony of the night compared to rondo.
Lament has a great combat system and graphics, but the stage layouts are repetitive. Curse is barren and you do the same combo for 8 hours. Had good concepts, but none of them mattered. I don't think Mike would enjoy either. Maybe having an audience with him would help though. Devil May Cry 1's got a Castlevania vibe as well.
@@JohnnyBurnes I tried to play Lament maybe 2 years ago. I didn't get far, but the fact that you'd enter those boring rooms again and again, with the same optional enemies spawning every time, left me very unimpressed. It felt like Luigi's Mansion done with the wrong franchise.
Have to admit that the most I saw of this game before was the James & Mike Mondays episode from a couple of years ago and so am happy to learn more about this game through this stream. I think the biggest surprise was Maria really...what the hell XD. I don't mind her but she as well as her attacks feel like they would belong more in a spin-off cute 'em up style of Castlevania than being a part of Rondo Of Blood (kinda like a Kid Dracula type of spin-off). Castlevania-related, I am now nearing the point in my Cinemassacre/Cinemassacre Clips watch on YT the point where Mike's first archived streams appear and the first one archived is about Odallus: The Dark Call, a Castlevania-like game with Metroidvania elements. Since Mike is known everywhere as the anniversary gamer, perhaps he should mark in his calendar to play Odallus next year to mark his 10-year anniversary as a streamer?...Just kidding, of course :) Game that is missing from your Games I've Beaten On Stream list: -Mega Man 2 - Back To Basics (NES Hacks/Homebrew/Unreleased) -Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
Lol James just released an AVGN episode about Rando of Blood and it figures it was AFTER you streamed the darn game. Does that dude EVER play any of the games he reviews these days? I mean it seems like he did for Horse Prince(that catastrophic video of calamities untold) Something snapped that man after 2014.. probably that friggin film that should have been filmed in the east coast. Sorry for the negativity. By the way I need to try out a Castlevania game sometime. After all these years I've never played one.
Oi Mick, had a dream you played turrican 2 last night. Thought it was real until i checked me youtube feed, and it wasn't there. Me kid would've loved to see that. Bloody hell
Definitely my favorite of the classic style Castlevania's, probably my third favorite overall behind Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow. If they made another classic-style game, it should be like this with multiple paths and secrets with a level select menu rather than just one short linear order of stages.
This is one I'd be happy to see Mike and James finally paly through together. I still enjoy the video they did from years back. Maybe Mike helps James play through.
The orb contains the soul of the boss you defeated. Richter absorbs the soul. Giving him strength and refilling his health. I'm talking out of my ass. I have no idea.
Unfortunately the version of SOTN included in this set is the one where they change all the fun dialogue people love. But Mike you play games on mute anyway so it wont bother you. For anyone else looking to play SOTN who wants the cheesey lines & voice over I recommend the standalone digital version you can get on Xbox.
That Superman II deleted scene you're talking about early in the video was actually used for the Donner Cut release. Definitely recommended viewing if you haven't seen it yet! :)
Dracula X is indeed a completely different game from Rondo. No classic CV fan should overlook it. The challenge and level design feel a lot like the NES era or the X68000 game, being rooted in your limited movement and options. It's no walk in the park, either, you gotta be really patient towards the end. You only get 2 lives per continue, and Dracula actually has a stage that you have to keep playing over and over while learning to beat him (the stage is full of medusa heads, moving platforms and spear knights). Also, despite using some of Rondo's graphical assets for the enemies and bosses, Dracula X has a completely unique visual style. The backgrounds are very colorful and detailed - all original pixel art. It may not have the grim look of IV, nor does it use black and single colors as effectively as Rondo, but it pulls off its own style in a fantastic way. The levels follow their themes well and feel coherent. There are 2 "dash" stages, 4' and 5' - you can get to them from levels 3 and 4, respectively. So, a total of 9 stages of Castlevania greatness, which most people ignore because they've been told that Dracula X is a worse "version" or Rondo or whatever. It hurts to read some of the comments. I think AVGN did a huge disservice to the game in 2009 with the "it's widely considered a butchered port of Rondo" line.
What do you think of Dracula X? I've never played Rondo of Blood. But in the 90s I got Dracula X on SNES. I thought it was a stylish anime take on the normal Castlevania. Didn't find out it was a cut down lesser Rondo for years.
One guy's opinion: Back in the day for American/European kids Dracula X was the only way to play this game because Rondo was a Japanese only release. Now that we live in an era where Rondo is readily available on modern platforms (as well as being able to download an ISO and play the original on an emulator) there's really no reason to play Dracula X, unless someone has personal nostalgia for that version.
@@Hahnsoulo Very much disagree with "no reason to play Dracula X." I've played both multiple times. Dracula X is its own thing, not a "version" of Rondo. Yes, they have the same character and share a lot of enemy / boss sprites (that SotN uses as well), but other than that they are two very different games, both great in their own right. Dracula X has all original background graphics, and many levels that completely differ from any of Rondo's themes. The gameplay pace is totally different, and overall Dracula X provides a bigger challenge.
I use save states as a replacement for lives or checkpoints, so I can just quickly go back to those points without having to sit through the dying music, animation and having to wait for the game to put me back where I was.
I was there for a good amount of this stream. I do like classic style Castlevania games. I just felt more at home with the Metroidvania ones. A major reason why I love Castlevania Advance Collection more than Castlevania Anniversary Collection. I highly recommend both of those collections though. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a great game. I simply prefer Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow more. I heard a lot about Castlevania: Rondo of Blood over the years. Sadly due to the versions in this collection it's exclusively on PS consoles. Which is a shame, I would love to play this elsewhere.
Well the axe isn’t bad in C4, it still has better range than the whip and it has a downward curve. In SC4 the sub-weapons actually feel like sub-weapons due to how you’re able to combo them with the 8-way whip, moreso than in other games where they feel more like secondary/alternative weapons. Well except the holy water which I would argue has never been a very good weapon.
Best version of this is the PSP game package. It has the Rondo of Blood remake, the original game and Symphony of the Night with the easiest Death Skip which spares me a lot of nonsense.
I’d say Dracula X on SNES is really difficult, but not challenging difficult like Castlevania III or Rondo. It’s more infuriating than enjoyable. At least for me. But honestly the last time I played it was back in 2018 on my 2DS XL. So not the most optimal method of play. That being said I just wish we could get another Castlevania Collection featuring SotN, RoB and maybe the PSP Dracula Chronicles. It’s just mind blowing that Nintendo can’t work something out with Konami to get something like that. As we all know it would sell like crazy.
Thank you for playing this!! This and Super Castlevania are my favorite Castlevanias! Also If it's ok, please play F-Zero 99 again for King's League!! Love your play throughs and commentaries!!
Not sure if you're going to post the Loop 2 playthrough of IV, but after declaring the game a "joke," now you absolutely have to do the "No Death" run. All three streams you did of the game had you dying a multitude of times, with many of those on the easiest stages, pretty much directly contradicting all of your statements regarding its difficulty (Again, not trying to yank your chain, but there's a pretty big discrepancy between what you're saying and what's happening on the screen). Ignoring it at this point would be to admit that it's too hard, and that 1 & 3 are actually easier given the completion of those "No Death" runs. Besides, it should be pretty easy, right? In all seriousness though, it would make an excellent challenge. Of course, in lieu of that, a "No Death" run of the all-time classic masterpiece The Wizard of Oz would be perfectly acceptable.
I never said Castlevania 4 was a joke. I said Loop 2 of Castlevania 4 compared to Loop 2 of Dracula’s Curse is a joke. I beat the second loop of CV4 pretty easily. Whereas trying to beat the second Loop of CV3 was one of the hardest gaming things I ever did. As for “no death” runs, its not like I did those easily. For Castlevania 1 it took me many, many attempts to get the no death run. Probably several streams I’d imagine. Where I don’t think a no death of CV4 would be very hard. Maybe I’ll do it sometime. Please don’t make me do OZ. 😩
@@mikematei Well, if you ever do try it, I look forward to it. Based on the three streams, I think it's going to be a little harder than you think, but that's why it would be a great challenge for you. As for Oz, purely joking. I wouldn't subject my worst enemy to that game, let alone someone who's already suffered through it once.
That’s in part what the SC4 designers(new team btw for whom Castlevania 4 was the first Castlevania and the first SNES game they made) intended, the SNES was a new console so they designed it with new players in mind. Plus they wanted to make a ame that was more about the atmosphere. I think they overall suceeded at making a game that was easier than the others but not braindead easy.
Castlevania has a history of awesome memorable soundtracks, but Rondo of blood is the best one to me, if we put together both quality and numbers of tracks.
Nice! I love your Castlevania streams. And Rondo, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and SotN are my 3 favorites! Just wish we could get RoB & SotN on Switch. As I’m currently having to resort to my PSP to play those two.
Okay, but you could argue using Maria in this game makes it too easy. Once you unlock Maria early on, what's the point in using Richter? They should have at least made her harder to unlock, and treat playing as her like a reward.
Mike, you should play through Belmont's revenge. I remember you tried it out with Ryan a while ago, but you've never finished it. Plus, it is a really good classic Castlevania.
Bro I am begging you so hard to playing dead by daylight when the Halloween chapter comes out. It's straight up a castlevanie collab. Plus players rage so hard when they stream anyway, and you're the champion of rage-ing this has the potential to be some of your best content ever and I say this as some that semi-frequently sub on twitch. Killer will be dracula. It's up in the air about whoever the survivor could be, but it's down to either Simon or alucard. Dead by daylight has an oc named felix Richter, so he'll probably just get a cosplay cosmetic lol.
I agree Castlevania is badass. Also if people don't want to hear you talk over cut scenes they could easily go and watch 100% playthrough vids with no commentary. I watch people like you for the reactions and commentary.
I still remember way back in the day playing Super Castlevania iV and showing off with the whip after beating bosses to my friends lol. Even the name Castlevania is freaking perfect for its genre. I haven't beaten the NES one though and probably never will. I just never liked its art style.
Mike, based on people's distrust of James right now, I think you guys could consider uploading all of your footage for these episodes to another channel. You, James, and Sean should also show your faces during the recording. (Of course, that's assuming they actually played the game.)

Based on the three streams, I think it's going to be a little harder than you think, but that's why it would be a great challenge for you. As for Oz, purely joking. I wouldn't subject my worst enemy to that game, let alone someone who's already suffered through it once.
The bone bridge 😅
You have to stand on the bones fall then jump off the bones before.
Maybe castlevania 4 is an intro for beginners, I don’t know me dumb.
Definitely the best Castlevania game.
😊❤ Always a good night and day for a Castlevania
I love the castlevania lore
Nice! I love your Castlevania streams. And Rondo, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and SotN are my 3 favorites! Just wish we could get RoB & SotN on Switch. As I’m currently having to resort to my PSP to play those two.
Would you prefer playing this PS version, or original on the Mister? Curious if you use Snax on your mister?
Yessss!
I never knew Billy Butcher was subscribed to mikes channel
Who
@@mikematei come on Mike, there’s no way you haven’t seen or read the Boys
The 3D-PSP version was my first Rondo. Didn't play the original until a few years ago. My nostalgia drive is completely ass-backwards 🤡
Okay, but you could argue using Maria in this game makes it too easy. Once you unlock Maria early on, what's the point in using Richter? They should have at least made her harder to unlock, and treat playing as her like a reward.
Have you played Bloodstained ritual of the night? Great game
When are you doing the 24 hour madden stream
Mike, you should play through Belmont's revenge. I remember you tried it out with Ryan a while ago, but you've never finished it. Plus, it is a really good classic Castlevania.
Ever play Harmony of Despair on the 360 arcade? Looks like an interesting coop experience.
If its the one with all the characters im thinking of that game kinda sucked
It was neat to build up the characters and team up. Could be unbalanced depending.
It's different, and a good time with the right people.
Dead by daylight has an oc named felix Richter, so he'll probably just get a cosplay cosmetic lol.
such an awesome game
It is the enemy's soul (Orb)
Is there anywhere you can get this game without giving yourself a virus?
Seems like your back into castlevania. I'll have to recommend vs. Castlevania again. It also has online leaderboards.
I agree Castlevania is badass. Also if people don't want to hear you talk over cut scenes they could easily go and watch 100% playthrough vids with no commentary. I watch people like you for the reactions and commentary.
Dante’s inferno remake or something really surprising they haven’t done that
I always wondered what was the point of bossed doing a final atack if it does not kill you, a joke of the devs perhaps?
I still remember way back in the day playing Super Castlevania iV and showing off with the whip after beating bosses to my friends lol. Even the name Castlevania is freaking perfect for its genre. I haven't beaten the NES one though and probably never will. I just never liked its art style.
Mike you may like a new turn based roguelike “The land beneath us”. Has throwback graphics. Very fun.
thanks I'll look into it.
Mike, based on people's distrust of James right now, I think you guys could consider uploading all of your footage for these episodes to another channel. You, James, and Sean should also show your faces during the recording. (Of course, that's assuming they actually played the game.)
Hm. For some reason i didn't get notified for new videos despite being subscribed.
Grande Mike.
Play sotn as Richter its really hard
He has the same attacks in rondo right?
You mean where instead of redesigning the castle to have like a linear path through it, they cheated and gave richter a bunch of overpowered moves?
@@mikematei yeah in a way. It is still wonky to traverse through the castle
Awesome 👍😎
Check out gunslinger girl PS2 Japan exclusive
So it's on wii
This was on Wii as well but it was in Japanese.
it would be nice to watch you play symphony of the night blind or whatever
Maybe I'd do it for members eventually. I'll consider it
draculas curse has most of its religious iconographics edited jp version dont
