  • Hello everyone! Today we discuss the importants of not falling for the old school traditional path that modern guitar players constantly get trapped into that don't work anymore. With that I give my thoughts and opinions on guitar cabs and why they are NOT necessary for the traveling musician of today!

    As an audience member, I hate it when guitarists go straight to FOH. Normally, I'm right at the front of the stage (with earplugs, of course), getting the most visceral experience possible out of a live show.
    When a guitarist is only going out the PA, I CANNOT HEAR THEM while at the front of the stage. Furthermore, their audibility is beholden to the sound guy, who usually sucks. So please, all y'all playing those small-venue shows that I love so much, please keep using those 4x12s.

      Well I’m not sure if your ears are tricking you but if someone is mic’d up to a PA the amp is turned down very low so I doubt you’d hear it over everything else.

    I've tried t rec with no amp for five long years, even tried the IR. But real speakers responds differently when you hit soft (low volume outta amp) or hard (more volume outta amp) the frequency response changes according to the voltage sent to the speakers, and the IR is a snapshot of one specific volume. that's why the sound of IR is different, unless you can stack the same impulse over different levels of poweramp together and use an algorithm to identify the different line levels coming in to the spkr sim and quickly change the different levels types of the IR's already chosen. Since 2006 the satisfying tones I've always happy with was through the real speakers.

      Well that’s why these amp sims cost so much money. They are also doing responses of the volume knobs. I love tube amps I have plenty of them. It’s just the modern guitarist has so many other choices and that’s the point of this video.

    • @83RED
      @83RED 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@CodyBarnette-GNARK , The amp sims just calculate the volume changes, they does not behave as the circuitry with the tolerance errors. but I was not talking about the amp sims, but the speaker sim, which is a very complex behavior each level and dynamic change affects the nearby response at the nearby frequencies + frequency relative level. To have this exact behavior a real speaker sim couldn't be simple It would demand an extreme huge number of files equal as the minimum variation of level + player's dynamic changes. It's good at the pre-production level or practice and live applications. Or even for those who cant recognize these changes. That's why we have so many flattened guitar tones now-days on low budgets albums productions plus, everyone is having the SAME TONE, just like the Clone army from the Star Wars. The CORE of the tone is so identical that's takes out the interest
      hmmm, this variety of choice is not exactly a choice since to be considered a choice it should have to be as good as the real. If it was so good as the real ones we wouldn't call it simulations. Just my point of view

    I admit that computer sim amps are more practical but the feeling you get when the sound moves the air around you and you feel the sound coming out your amp is unique and it’s what I love about playing guitar.

    Personally, I know I'm now leaning more towards running my pedals or guitar processor into my power amp pedal and then running that power amp pedal into a vertical 2x12 cab with some quality speakers. Definitely viable for performing live and touring while not causing back problems later on in life.

  • @lylaznboi01
    @lylaznboi01 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Not a guitar player, but someone who plays guitar for songwriting purposes and in the audio world. Guitarists has plenty of options to record their guitar tone, it's just a matter of how they want to go about it and their budget. There are guitar players who prefer an actual amp and cab, and there's nothing wrong with that, but their neighbors might unless you have your own studio space. But it's also more than just throwing on a mic and aim at the speaker. What you hear in the room versus recorded will be different. You can dial in such an amazing guitar tone for yourself, place the mic on the speaker, and hit record, but it may not be the sound you hear in your head when you play it back. Unless you have the luxury to separate the cab from the room, you can't really hear what you're doing blasting the cab in the same room as you. That's where a loadbox and IRs come in, if you prefer to record real amps. There are plenty of high quality IRs out there and they're honestly not expensive besides maybe the loadbox. On top of that, let's say you don't have the money to own a high quality amp, more than likely, there's an amp sim version of it that's pretty damn close to the original. If you want several top of the line amps in a digital format, there are good amp sim/digital hardware companies out there that will do the job. As long as you keep an open mind, there are several ways to achieve a great guitar tone for yourself.

    I own 4 4x12 cabs. And three heads. I just sold a multi Fx floor unit. Guitar players fall into a category thinking all the band needs is a guitar sound going directly into the mystical PA system that either venue has or the singer has. I have played guitar in small clubs and in auditoriums and even a basketball gym. I used a 60 watt tube amp with 1 12” speaker playing guitar for a basketball pep band. Having these amps and cabs I am able to set them up as a makeshift PA system if I want. Using only a small mixer. One single 12” speaker on both sides of a stage doesn’t put out that much sound. A dual rectifier into a 412 is able to get a very low volume however the tube heads I have are not as low volume. People forget about beer and drinks and other band members spilling drinks on gear. I’ve run into a wall using multi Fx boards trying to get volume equilibrium from one setting to another And even though it’s nice to have so many Fx and amp mods most pro guitarists don’t need 50 different amps or 200 Fx. Some just use a Marshall head or fender amp and like 5 or 6 stomp boxes. The multi Fx boards tend to dominate the guitar players brain so the time is wasted programming a board instead of writing songs. We had a band and our PA system tended to be whatever we had at the time. So the multi Fx and amp mod sellers post this ever present PA system or ever present singer with a pa idea that isn’t always realistic. Some venues have a pa that just doesn’t work at all. I’ve even seen pros having to use a broken house pa. So I’ll keep my 4 cabs and plan to keep getting more cabs like 15s and subs too but the live band has to move air I don’t think any amp mod can put out the sound that my amps and stomp boxes make. Having owned bassman and super reverb and twin reverb and a 70s kustom the solid state digital just isn’t the same but also a lot of people want to be rockstars and never gain any arm strength lol

    It always baffles me when anyone thinks that you can replace the original ‘thing’ that produced that irreplaceable feel that we fall in love with.
    There have always been those people who have battled against those who have tried to replace us..remember Nugent literally shooting keyboards back in the early 80’s?? Guitars and guitar gear will never be antiquated. They’ll never truly be replicated. The ‘feel’ of the real thing.
    Why don’t you just tell people to put down the guitar and develope an AI guitar replicator to run through a keyboard workstation, and call it ‘making music’.

    • @CodyBarnette-GNARK
      @CodyBarnette-GNARK  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think we need to face the facts. Guitar gear and music, in general is changing. New guitarists could care less about boutique amp heads. Sadly it will be a collectors thing as time goes on. The feel of a real amp is definitely better than a floor unit but for guitar players that didn’t start on amp head they just don’t care. The numbers will continue to grow over time and amp heads will not be as popular as they used to be or even as popular as they are now. It’s a sad truth. Now I’m not saying that within 10 years amp heads will disappear but think about 50-100 years from now. Think how advanced we will be.

      Also. I don't think an audience could give a rat's ass about how it "feels" to the working guitarist, and that audience is who will be paying your bills BTW once you get to that level. Like mentioned before, a lot of these up and comers will be the generation that specifically uses this new tech, so they won't miss anything honestly. They will have their "own feel" of sorts. It's just funny how some find this so threatening. Everything changes, and history has proven this time and time again in every aspect of life, there's no denying it. Amps and muscle cars... very cool and testosterone driven, but just too much expense, hassle, and not exactly practical for the average Joe these days. And I think, telling future generations you should just put the guitar down, for the sin of using a modeler (AI guitar replicator?) is just plain silly. These kids still want to play guitar, they are just using a different way of filtering and projecting it's sound. OOOOO scary! Yes, the tech is not quite there at present, but it's pretty damn close. Just think what will be achieved within the next decade? I personally can't wait to see what's in store! I just hope the amp industry is ready for the change.

And all I do is run my amp sim through an audio interface and it plays directly through my computer which cost $3,500 to build. Volume! You can’t play a 4x12 in a domestic environment. Even a 1 watt tube is too loud! So I go from amp to mixers to studio monitors. Then a feed from mixer to the computer for recording. So I can crank the tubes and turn the overall volume down at the mixer. Perfect solution. The cab sim is pretty good. But if I jam again, I’ll buy a cab for sure. Yep. A 60 watt Mark series Mesa 1x12 combo will absolutely slay a lot of larger amps. Especially the ones with the EV 150w speakers. If you have a gray haired guy in the band, he’s going to kill your 4x12 by turning the eq knobs on his 1x12 and using an amp stand. Bedroom bottom end tone disappears in the mix in live shows. The 70,s and 80’s rock guy is going to be the only one heard when he hangs out with the younger band, because he knows low flub flub flub doesn’t cut through. The reason you don’t hear 1x12 combos in a live setting is that no one knows what to do with the bass knob anymore.

      Thanks for the reply.
      The biggest problem with a combo vs 4x12 is that most people set it on the ground flat, and the 4x12 has 2 speakers that are well above the 1x12 which drowns it out. Getting the combo off the ground and angling the speaker upwards changes the way everyone in the room hears it. Also placing it with the back of the amp in a corner if possible. My Mesa Mark V 1x12 combo sounds 4 times louder than my 2x12 JVM 410C or my EVH with 2x12 cab, because it’s about 2 feet higher off the ground. There’s also the tubes vs solid state thing. A 20 watt tube amp is usually much louder than a solid state amp that claims more than twice the wattage. I much prefer a 1960BV cabinet for fullness of sound, but I’m not lugging that thing to rehearsals. Back before the days of in ear monitors, my band used side wash monitors on both sides of the stage on stands at ear level. When we were playing with multiple other bands using our sound system, they would often say. “This is the first time I’ve ever been able to hear myself and everyone else”.

      @@apacheworrier3776 100% angling the cab upwards helps you hear. That doesn’t mean the rest of the band can hear you. So as a guy who ditched his "real" rig around 2016 and switched to a Helix Floor, then to a Kemper Powerhead, I'm back to using a "real rig," and here's why. For one, most modelers going into the PA don't have the ability to give you sufficient stage volume, and if you're in the front row, you likely wouldn't normally be able to hear the guitars because the house monitors might be behind your ears. Additionally, when you're playing with a metal drummer blasting away, you won't even be able to hear yourself unless you had the amp close to your ear. I know the powerhead can push a cab plenty effectively, but the Kemper is perfect and that's why it's boring. For the record, my rig these days is a JVM410H going into a Mesa OS 412 with a few pedals and even though it's a bit of a pain in the ass to haul around, I couldn't be happier.

    When I originally started playing, I has a tiny solid state 15W Ibanez combo with 1x8" speaker. Then I upgraded to a 100W Marshall Valvestate combo with a 1x12" speaker. Then I sold that and went full digital, just using sims on my PC. That's also when my hobby virtually died as a result. I stopped playing. I was always frustrated with how crap it sounds, how difficult it is to use. And sure, I know it's a "me" problem that I don't know how to use it properly, that other people can sound amazing that way. But you know what? I just bought recently a 2x12 100W= tube combo (H&K switchblade, programmable like digital modellers despite being all tube!) and it's the best thing ever. I just need to now buy a Captor X to attenuate it, and another 2x12 cab once I start gigging and stuff. I started playing again and everything is just easy to use and just sounds and feels good, as opposed to what it was when I was gaslighting myself into relying on sims for the sake of budgeting and the alleged convenience at home and so on, that it's my fault they sound bad cause others can make it great and it was only making me depressed, frustrated and demotivated instead of enjoying the hobby. Now I wanna buy a digitech whammy, digitech freqout and a budget rest of pedalboard (like, a bezosboard tier of budget, at least for starts, I even made an amazon wishlist for my wife to have ideas what to get for me for whatever occasions). I considered a Line 6 HX FX multieffect to use with 4CM instead of a pedalboard but then I started seeing all the problems with the processing limitations when you use pitch shifters and feedbackers and realised I was trying to gaslight myself into sims again that oh that should work just as well as a real pedalboard and be cheaper, more convenient. But no. I'm not gonna go down that route again. However, using IRs on Captor X besides miced up combo that I have to mix that later on in the recording sounds like it's gonna be an awesome thing to enhance the sound when mixing demos and stuff... Or on gigs giving the IR'd sound to PA of the venue without bothering to mic up the physical cabs that would be more or just me on the stage... but the main point is that sims are awesome, but as a supplement to physical stuff, not as a replacement. You can achieve with them stuff you can't with physical stuff, but this is a 2 way street and in a lot of ways they are much harder to use and don't feel or sound right without you totally nerding out over all the tiniest parameters that require really extensive knowledge and experience that you could otherwise spend just playing and having none of that barrier to sound and feel the way you want... I say it's best to try to use real stuff and just supplement it with digital stuff for things that go beyond your budget and would be too inconvenient/take up too much space/etc. to have everything physical. One needs to find the best balance that will work for their specific needs and situation and also remember that this may change over time instead of being evangelical about either extreme of analogue vs digital beef.

    all i know is, when playing live, I'll take the head and cab route everytime. If but for the fact that I don't want to battle with the front of house guy at a venue

      Sure if I’m playing a small venue or bar but there is a reason almost every major band has an axe fx, kemper, quads cortex or line 6 stuff. Because it works and saves money or traveling cost. Instead of moving hundreds of pounds worth of amps and cabs it’s just a simple floor unit.
