    Excellent presentation of this technique to update existing hollow core doors! This past spring we wanted to replace all of our doors professionally. For 20 doors, it would have cost over $12000.00. I used this method to update the existing doors and only spent just over $1200.00. (That's right, 1/10th of the replacement cost!) We did install new doorknobs, but were able to reuse the hinges, which I painted. We love how our "new" doors look!

    Hi Folks, I've answered some common questions in this comment...
    Primer to allow a water-based paint to be applied over an oil-based finish - amzn.to/2ObvvKe
    Semi-gloss white paint (water-based) - amzn.to/3r7NVdk
    My doors were original to my house (1948) and were originally finished with an oil-based clearcoat. In order to paint them with modern water-based paints I needed a special primer that is designed to be used over oil-based finishes. As is typical before any painting, I lightly sanded the whole door to provide a rougher surface for the primer to adhere to. The primer was applied to the whole door and allowed to dry overnight. The primer is quite thin, so a second or third coat may be needed to achieve better coverage. Once the primer is dry it is then safe to apply your water-based paint of choice.
    How do you know if you have an oil-based paint or finish on your doors?
    - You can do a simple adhesion test which is basically a scratch test. Put a little latex paint on a piece of trim in an inconspicuous spot, let it dry overnight, and try to scratch it off with your fingernail. If the paint comes off easily, it's very likely an oil-based finish. If it's hard to remove, you're good to continue painting.
    - Or, if you have a can of acetone simply apply some to a rag or cotton ball and rub an area where you think oil paint might be present. If the paint softens or comes off on the rag it’s latex (water-based). If it stays hard and nothing happens it’s oil based paint.
    - Or, instead of acetone you can also use rubbing Alcohol, which is kept in most household medicine cabinets. If you do not have any rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover will also do the trick. If you choose to use nail polish remover make sure to check the bottle first. If it says "Acetone Free" it will not work.
    I hope this helps, please feel free to comment or reply and I'll add to this comment as needed.

      Visit your local Hazard Fright store or local equivalent Chinesium Tool Warehouse. Some of their higher end tool lines, like Hercules, are actually really good quality and reasonably affordable. If you're really broke, and your personal safety is of no concern then they still have the handy dandy Bauer and Chicago Electric line of cheap-o-tools.

    I was thinking about doing this with my older heavier more solid doors but wasn’t quite sure. This sealed the deal as I did repaint one of them and it came out great. I wasn’t sure if the trim sticking out from the door would look right but now I’m sure I’m rehabbing all doors and doing this update.
    Smelly Door - sand and prime with KILZ. Works great at removing any Smokey or funky smells from the older door. I use two coats. I used a sand paper grit that was pretty aggressive. Can’t recall the fact fact number but it should be for refinishing
    Assembly - I always dry fit after cutting and would suggest beginners use tape to hold in place before gluing and nailing. I don’t think caulking the edges is necessary but that’s another step I guess.
    Great video! I wish I would do the same but I really don’t understand how to do that while working and trying to concentrate. I admire all TH-cam people but especially one that takes the time to do time lapsed photography. I’ve done so much work on this old house I could start a channel.

      That's true, but I think buying primed, sanded, solid wood trim for around $30 a door is hard to beat. I don't think I'd be saving any money by buying the raw materials and paint to get the same end product. If the door weren't getting painted I would definitely consider making my own trim to avoid the finger-jointed stuff.

    Wow, such a great video. I would like to do this, because replacing my ugly 1963 hollow core doors is extremely out of my budget. I am a novice. How did you select the trim? I noticed there appeared to be two identical looking trims on the store shelf, but you picked the $12.xx over the $1.99. I know there is a reason Just curious what it is!

    • @PatonHaus
      @PatonHaus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, it may not be clear in the video but the $1.99 tag is a price per foot, meaning the same 8 foot length would cost $16. Buying a pre-cut 8’ length for $12.69 is the more cost effective option. If you had very tall doors then you may need to buy it by the foot to ensure you’re getting one full length instead of having joints in the wood. Hopefully that answers your question. 👍

    If you replaced the door handle, hinges or painted them black it would’ve looked 5x better. it already looks good but would’ve looked way better.

      True, but in my case the rest of my house still had a very old feel to it. Replacing hardware in one area has a tendency to make all of the other older hardware look even worse. I made the call to keep it all existing to keep the old vibes uniform throughout the house.

    Ummh just buy a new door less hassles.. for all that effort not worth my while...to start off with all the tools you nedd labour petrol material and time... Are you really saving? that's more like a retirement hobyy...

      It’s a 75 year old house, all the doors are solid and heavy. The door openings are not standard sizes, with old style hardware suitable for the age of the house. There’s zero benefit to replacing the doors with MDF cardboard hollow core replacements with cheesy modern hardware. It’s okay if you aren’t capable of doing this kind of work, maybe buying new doors would work better for you.

      The top coat is a water based paint but I did have to use an oil-to-water primer because the original finish on the door was oil-based.

    I really like this video! I was just wondering how long did it take you to wait for the primer to dry and how long to finish all?

    • @PatonHaus
      @PatonHaus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The primer dries quickly, maybe a few hours. I did all the doors in my house so it took a little while, each door takes maybe 2 days with paint drying time included.

      Provided you haven’t replaced the hinges with new ones it will go back up in the exact same spot. It’s easiest to leave the hinges on the wall and only remove the pins.
