The Cyclops fly! Often read that fish will attack some flies and lures simply because of the colour of them or because a rattle as been attached, even though the lure/fly looks absolutely nothing like its usual food stuff, a bit like the fish is offended by the presence of this brash intruder into it's territory and decides he is going to bite a big chunk out of it to teach it a lesson! As always an enjoyable video presentation my friend, many thanks.

Thank you! I tend to think that fish need to do a lot of trial and error. they see new stuff all the time and the only way they can find out what the new stuff is, is by biting it. So they do and most times they can just spit it back out again. Most times ;)

This is a great fly! When I tie it I use a pair of scissors to cut the foam and call it Chernobyl Ant... ;-)
Like Ron Mehringer suggest, I always put the brighter foam on top. I think the bright foam makes the fly more visible for the fisherman and black foam gives the fly I good silhouette that makes it more visible to the fish. I often combine yellow and orange foam.

Would it make sense to make both layers of foam in the brighter color to make it easier for the angler to see? My logic is that the fish only see the bottom color anyway.

Hi Daniel, thanks for sending me this link, I subscribed to both your channels almost a year ago, I must have missed this. I definitely would have watched if I knew the surprise ending. I think your success on this fly, besides your fishing abilities, is not only the silhouette of it, but the long legs you left at the rear. In that havarrd festival video those legs really kicked life like. I don't know if you had an eye on that fly, but I would take the advice of any guide that showed me that. Also, after reading Dick Talleur's experiences in Russia I would bank on it. As far as eyes on the bottom, I can think of 2 floating patterns. The baby doll I believe it's called, a foam minnow shaped pattern tied side ways on the hook so the eye is presented to the fish. And I think the other is Milt's floating smelt. It's also tied sideways with pearlescent tubing over a foam underbody. Both are fished like a dying minnow. As you well know, the eyes have it as a strong trigger for any predator. Best of luck with fishing that where ever you said it was, and good luck with the tubes. With your enthusiasm & passion, if there's anyone that can do it, it's you. Thanks for you time Daniel, I'll be putting eyes on the bottom of my top water flies now.

Great theory on the fly with the eye, and on the tube fly. I will be watching with anticipation your increased hooking percentages. Thanks for sharing. If this catches on it could be a game changer on the dry fly scene. What, if anything, do you think about Britain breaking away from the EU? All the best, Sean

I've always wondered why most fly tyers stresses about those little things, like covering and hiding the tying thread. The fish SURPRISINGLY enough don't pay attention to those minor details...
Well, anyways. Nice fly! Using a little bit of other color dubbing for the eye works also if you don't have those epoxy eyes.

You have a good point with the differed color of dubbing ;)

Nice fly, looks similar to a Chernobyl Ant we tie here in the US,I tie mine with a small cactus chenille & a small hackle palmered along the body, would look cool in a purple & black color scheme, tight lines & bent rods.

This is indeed the same theme as the Chernobyl Ant ;) this stuff just work what ever you call them! ;)
