I tied a couple up, just to see. On 1 I used chartreuse ice dub, and on the other I used pink ice dub. Yesterday I went for Brookies, and caught 20 plus fish on the chartreuse body, and retired it after. It was mangled pretty bad. Lol! It's a great pattern. Thank you.

Tim, Another fine pattern. Thank you. I know you have an affinity for UV Ice Dub, but you don't use it here. Any reason?

Don't have Olive Ice Dubbing but I do have Blue Steelie Ice Dubbing that I'm gonna use instead haha

Do you tie this on with a nonslip loop or a clinch knot

Mine didn't float that well. Any advice on getting it to float higher?

Hi Tim, what advice do you have for tying this pattern in smaller sizes? I tried a couple on a size 16 Stubby T hook from Umpqua and found that they kept floating on their side, despite having the foam as well centered as I could get it.

As a newbie tier, I have a couple of questions. What size is the beaver tail cutter? What does the ice dubbing represent on a beetle?

The Beavertail cutter is the small size from River Road Creations. The ICE dub on the underside of the beetle, to me anyway, is more attractive than it is representative. There is something about ICE dub on the underside of foam bodied flies that just plain works.

You don't neeeed the foam cutter either... especially with beetles. Unless you plan on tying a ton of foam terrestrials, I would just deal with the foam strip like he recommends in the video. I don't know your reasons to get into fly tying, but if you're a true Newby I would highly recommend starting small and see if you really like spending hours at the vice to fill a box. Many love it, but it's not for everyone. No sense buying a $20 cutter for bulk/show quality flies if you end up not enjoying tying. Just my two cents

I just cut the shape with scissors. Even one flies like chubbys.
