Probably the perfect Technic set! The real rover will also not go over a big rock but rather around it. Suspension is mostly for the uneven terrain. Would have been a cool Easter-egg to add the pet rock that Perseverance carried around it's wheel for a while. I guess you can use one of the spare parts for that. ;)
The suspensions doesn't work when the set is pushed, because it reality all wheels are powered, which cooperates with this kind of suspension Pushing it makes it less stable because forces are acting in reverse (pushing wheel over surface vs pulling surface under wheel) This kind of suspension can climb over obstacles up to three times of wheel diameter (Imagine you car going over curb three times the wheel diamater). That's also one of the reasons why the rover is so slow
Hi Balázs! I think this set is better than the LEGO Technic fan community thought because it contains a tons of brilliant building techniques and also rocketed from the not so interesting licensed car, construction maschine category which is great and makes this set more desireable than other sets. Sorry for the minimal grammar mistakes but I still learn English and do my best. Nice content, thank you to shared it this! 😊
My theory about the orange flower piece (3:53) is that it's supposed to resemble the California Poppy, the state flower of California, where the rover was built and tested.
Very excited for this set. It’s very unique for the line and isn’t another supercar or construction vehicle. The steering is genius even if there is slack in the functionality.
You should tell Lego they owe you commission because you just sold me this set! Not just one either, but rather one for me, one for my daughter, one for my science-ie friend, and maybe one for storage because in 10 years it’ll be worth $750 in the sellers market! Yes sir you just made a sale for Lego Corporation. I hope they appreciate the value you provide for them and their customers! I sure value your videos! Thank you for reviewing and sharing with TH-cam! 👏👏👏
Great review, obviously but super kudos for including all the technical detail about the rover itself. As someone who's had the chance to work with the rover teams, it was nice to have that extra detail shown off!
I work at cornell. I see one of the real rovers every day. They made a few so when things go wrong the support teams on earth could use the other ones to help fix it and send commands. Even though I see the real one all the time I might have to get this.
Didn't know this was being released! It looks fantastic I've been interested in the whole perseverance mission from start, part. The helicopter. I'll be getting it, especially the price looks good
In defense of the suspension action: I think the LEGO design went in the direction of more realism than play. Moving the model by the body is a poor simulation of the design. Because the rover is driven by the wheels they will climb obstacles. The suspension does not need to bound over uneven surfaces like an off-road vehicle. It will never coast - it is always driven - slowly. The suspension needs to move to maintain stability and contact with the surface as the wheels follow the undulations - not react to them.
It will be nice for propping up on uneven terrain, but yeah definitely not meant to move around over it. Maybe some day Lego will release a larger version of the rover with reinforced suspension and whatnot, that can actually be controlled by a motor system.
Grats on being first in my list for the review. Just saying how much i love the content you put in reviews, all of it is great info and enjoyable details. Looking forward to this set, definitely more interesting than the lunar lander.
Man I like it. That will be a nice add to the shuttle and Saturn. It has some nice functions and features. The cost is reasonable. The down side, I have to wait till August ☹️, yes I'm in America. As always, your builds and opinions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the detailed explanation on how the steering mechanism works! It's really genious, such a shame the rest of the system has so much slack in it!
I bought that set. Building process is pleasant and model itself is nice, but in my opinion there is way to much slack in steering mechanism. I wonder if pneumatics wouldn't be a better design choice.
I've got 3 days ago and my first thought was to motorise it. Unfortunately motorising the wheels would be very hard but I'll definitely add motors for the arm. Actually I re-thought my position, I'm thinking about driving the wheels using wormgear, so it creeps like a real thing. But the problem is that those weels don't have much grip. And I have only 4 engines, so not all of them could be driven (and making drive the weels through driveshaft given how the suspension works).
Thank you ! It is Augustc2024 here j. MID-Amerucz and I've just purchased my LEGO MARS ROVER. Your comments should prove helpful. I will say that I have an ambitious UPGRADE even before I open the box. I intend to use high torque RC steering servos, a 5 chanbrl 2.4 GHz reciever, sensor-equipped brushless drive motors, LiPo compatible ESCs, rea, fully functioning sensors fir real-world data collection, full duplex FPV and data streaming on 5.8 GBz. I might use digi-vid cams. and gyroscopic stabilization . The challenge will be to micro-miniaturize real spectrometers and a possible surface scaning Fourier Transform analyzer. The task is way large. but might keep me COMPLETELY (IN)SANE this coming Winter 🤪😵💫😬 Seeing that I have a PRUSA 3D printer, some of my "bricks" might be a tad off the wall.
So about the wheels, something I noticed while building the set is that the instructions tell you to misalign some of the universal joints along the drive shaft, which was very odd to see. I thought maybe it made the steering smoother to have them misaligned (something about the alignment of the wheels relative to the axis of rotation?) but it doesn't seem to me like there's anything in the instrutions about it...
This is cool. I bought Curiosity and never opened the box as it was so cool. I might do the same with this. As much as i love the models, some boxes are too nice to open sometimes!
@@PersonOnTheInternetRightNow Yeah, I don’t get it. The fun of LEGO is building a cool set. There is nothing fancy about their boxes - and one could always tape it back up and display the box if they really want to.
I can't wait to get this set. Iove the NASA sets and already Space Shuttle Discovery, International Space Station, the Apollo 11 Rocket and the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander and i think this will look great with them :)
Why the small flower to block the mechanism you asked. Well, a normal stud would be knocked off a lot easier than that flower stud. It has a bit more clutch power and by its shape it dampens the force of the mechanism that hits it a lot better. So small but clever design.
2:58 that thing is a rtg (radioisotope thermal generator) it’s what gives the rover its power Edit: I didn’t see that he explained what it is later in the video.
It would be interestiIt would be interesting to see one compared to the old Mars Exploration Rover set 7471ng to see one compared to the old Mars Exploration Rover set 7471
The flower and carrot may be in reference to the mission to look for signs of life. In the same way as the Jurassic Park T-Rex they might have snuck in a frog. The real Perseverance does carry a dinosaur.
I think they should instead of doing info about the rover in the instructions, it should have a QR code and it should show you the different featuresof the rover irl and show them on the build.
I've got it 3 days ago and I already thought about motorising this. Unfortunately motorising wheels will be very hard but I will definitely add motors for the arm.
@@RacingBrick Thank you., But, geesh, shouldn't the drawing show both bags so that it's utterly clear that you're supposed to open both? The fact that the two bags both have "1" but the one has a solid white background behind the "1" and the other has just a white border around the "1" sure makes it seem like it's somehow for two different builds.
In Poland it is also already available. I've got it 3 days ago. And for the lower price, around 78 euro. Although the app still doesn't have the rover (like Balazs said), I suspect they will release it on 1.06.
Jeez... I mean the blue and red pins and yellow axles are ugly in normal Technic sets already but this... Before buying this, one should get a bunch of white, black and grey pins from 3rd party suppliers to replace the original ones.

Its technic
Your English is perfectly readable, no need to apologize :)
@@jaloswaggons2182 Thanks 🙂
I really love this set already, I cannot wait until someone in the community find a way to motorize it. As a NASA fan - I need this!
This is probably the first time that the Technic style actually fits the build.
Thanks for the shoutout!
The designers of Technic sets are beyond amazing. So many varies of techniques in each set they produce
My theory about the orange flower piece (3:53) is that it's supposed to resemble the California Poppy, the state flower of California, where the rover was built and tested.
I wish lego mindstorm was still a thing. God mindstorm was so ahead of its time.
Very excited for this set. It’s very unique for the line and isn’t another supercar or construction vehicle. The steering is genius even if there is slack in the functionality.

YYESSS!! Been waiting for your review of this set! You're the best Balazs!
This is a very cool set. A definite buy … Keep up the great videos

i personally know a lot of NASA offices that will definitely have one of these.
I had the pleasure of building this recently and I've got to say I highly recommend it to whoever can get it.
Definitely excited for this set to arrive it looks amazing
My wallet after watching this, just after I build the Discovery set last week: "Oh sh... here we go again"

Very cool set. Also one of the hardest sets I've made, had to take it apart and rebuild it a couple times to get the mechanisms just right.
Thanks for the detailed explanation on how the steering mechanism works! It's really genious, such a shame the rest of the system has so much slack in it!
This is an awesome build. thank you for the video. Waiting (im)patiently for June 1st.
Ooh, this looks nice! I'm undecided about the new skidder because of the price, but this one I will definitely grab!
I've been waiting for this>:)
I neeeedddd itttt nowwwwww
I bought that set. Building process is pleasant and model itself is nice, but in my opinion there is way to much slack in steering mechanism. I wonder if pneumatics wouldn't be a better design choice.
Wow, they are all top secret stuff, worth getting one.
Thanks for letting me know this will not be available until August.
First day buy for me. This will
Be my first set of 2023.
And the next video is gonna be I WOKE UP IN A NEW BUGATTI (i meant the Bolide)
Im looking forward to somone motorizing it, that mechanism is brilliant

Not that bad. I think this set gets a lot of attention by the space and mars fans. And in some years it will get precious. My guess. 😊
...does have ingenious building tech'nics 😋👍🏼...
It looks great! Yeah, the suspension will never work great but that's because it's designed for Mars gravity 😎

Supercool build and set.. Will have to get this one!
Just got a polybag version of this.
Fantastic!
This is amazing I need it

Just built it , it really is a great kit!!!
Such a set should really be able to drive over some obstacles I think.
What are dimensions of the ready and assembled position of the rover in inches
i wish it was motorised.
I can't wait to get this set. Iove the NASA sets and already Space Shuttle Discovery, International Space Station, the Apollo 11 Rocket and the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander and i think this will look great with them :)
Interesting how your gear ratio in your ingenuity helicopter is 1:10. In mine it’s more like 1:4.
You need to charge the battery more, leave the helicopter outdoors ;)

Wonderful review ! Please show us how to motorise this set. I will buy it as soon as the price is at 60€.
I love how the 42158 has so many gears and functions! (yes i liked my own comment)
I really like this Technic set. It’s my favorite LEGO theme ever, but I know almost nothing about this Mars Rover itself
Honestly my favorite feature of it is the 2 mode steering using all knob gears
Thanx for the video.❤❤❤
Great review!
someone’s gotta make a sky crane that can attach to that thing!
omg it is so cool i can now flex on others
2:58 that thing is a rtg (radioisotope thermal generator) it’s what gives the rover its power
Edit: I didn’t see that he explained what it is later in the video.
I was sad I missed out on the Curiosity Rover (set # 21104), but looking at the pictures, this one is a much better set.
It is better because it is bigger than the cuusoo set
i am nasa red fan ❤❤❤
I don’t think the propellers are linked with hearing. I think when you spin the top one you create air movement which spins the bottom one.
Well price to function ratio
Impressive
I like the set quite much

great video my friend :)

Once I found a missing piece in the plastic bag after a year when I was sorting my LEGO boxes 😅
I think they should instead of doing info about the rover in the instructions, it should have a QR code and it should show you the different featuresof the rover irl and show them on the build.
I just built this set, it will look great next to the ISS.
I wonder how long it will take for someone to make a motorised version.
Probably a few centuries
I've got it 3 days ago and I already thought about motorising this. Unfortunately motorising wheels will be very hard but I will definitely add motors for the arm.
yes!!!!
well compared to the ideas curiosity this is quite large so I wouldn't call it small
I know what I’m getting my dad for Christmas or his birthday
Isn’t the helicopter named InSight ?
So… Has the app been updated after 2 months or is it still unusable?
Right at the beginning it's unclear what to do. There are TWO parts bags with the number "1" on them. Which one am I supposed to open?
Both
@@RacingBrick Thank you., But, geesh, shouldn't the drawing show both bags so that it's utterly clear that you're supposed to open both? whats the AR for?
Wonder what will motorised version like
It can drift
A B model would have been very easy here with Curiosity.
It is a steal for just $99
2:57 its an RTG
Is it RC?😊
I’m never this early
dam thought this was like a Rc car
August August !!!! WTF!!!! For the country that actually produces the real Rover we should begin also. I was dead set on ordering this on June 1st
That's about 450 bucks in my country
Well good for them for trying to be different, but i dont really like it
looks awfull geek in me its beautifull

Btw guys it’s sold out lol
I'm disappointed that the wheels are a single piece of plastic and not something you assemble
hi
Early
Way to many colored pins 🤮
It is supposed to be colored. If you make it the same color pins, it ruins the whole purpose of it being a Technic set
