- Renowned photographer Harry Borden shares a story time of photographing PJ Harvey in this unforgettable photoshoot. Experience the magic of film and portrait photography in this iconic session! check out Harry's website here: harryborden.com
I'm a long-time professional and can say that this is the best portrait photo channel on TH-cam. Harry is the real deal in a sea of fakes and wannabes. Anyone who wants to be a real photographer needs to be watching listening to Harry and maybe one or two others, like Scott over at Tin House Studio. Please keep posting. Absolutely love the channel, and your work.
I agree - he seems like a nice guy who has to put up with some big egos - not the artist's either who all seem quite obliging.
Very kind comment thank you, really means a lot! We will keep them coming 😁
And yep Scott has some great commercial work!
I find it funny that this often seems to be the case!
That degraded print is absolutely fantastic...a work of art in its own right. I hope Polly gets to see it some day.
I love it yeah. I'm glad we have a scan of it!
I love this, hearing these stories is priceless. That out of focus portrait of polly is fenomenal, its gonna be a classic. It already is ⭐
The photo of PJ Harvey's profile against the green background is probably the best photo taken of her. It's really astonishingly good. I have to say the cross-processed slide film was a really good medium for you because there are numerous iconic photos of yours from that era.
Really nice comment thank you! And yes I agree. Cross processed film has such a distinctive look which Harry nails I think.
WTF have i just witnessed. I don't know this guy in the photograph world but he has to be the best storyteller ever!!! This is the first video i have just came across of his channel.
I'm new photography the past 4-5 years but let’s put our hands together for Harry passing on his wisdom. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪 Harry. Btw i love to take pictures of cows 🐄 😂 thats my muse!!
Haha thanks for the great comment! So glad you enjoyed the video, plenty more on the channel ;)
And Harry always says photograph what you love so Cows can be great muse!
This is exactly what we need. A detailed account of the story and thought processes behind the photos. Superb😊
Much appreciated. Glad you are enjoying the vids 😁
That photo from your garage is truly a masterpiece. Rugged but incredible and speaks volumes
This is one of my favorite stories, i've rewatched this video several times.
Thanks for sharing Harry!
Also your images look amazing, I'm sure Polly was fond of the 2012 session as well.
Thank you! Means a lot.. I love this video particularly as well.
So many stories; good stories, retold by an intelligent, thoughtful and articulate photographer.
Thank you - Thats very kind!
A lesson for how to live your life too. Brilliant video ❤
love photography, love pj harvey even more. you lucky lucky man.
😁 Glad you enjoyed!
I've seen that shot of her against the green background hundreds of times, never knew it was shot by you😂, or your flat 30 mins from me in Bethnal Green 😂😂😂. Really enjoyed this story!
Thanks for the comment - Love that Bethnal Green area!
As fellow photog, a career long PJ fan and a long time admirer of your work, this video is perfect. Keep them coming, they are all fantastic.
You are a wonderful story teller. I love listening to your experiences while i work.
So glad to give you some entertainment while you work! Thanks for watching and commenting
Not just entertainment but education. Experience is the best teacher. Sharing one’s experiences is much appreciated.
Just a brilliant story to share. The opportunity to snap a few shots of PJ at the supermarket would be on my bucket list.
Thanks a lot! We will scan those negatives and release them on Harry's website soon!
Love these stories. We just saw PJ Harvey perform a few weeks ago and it was amazing.
Wow thanks for commenting! She is amazing I bet the show was too!
Aww, I love the pay off that you named your daughter after her. Such a cool story about a phenomenal artist. Love your channel, man, it’s great hearing you reminisce.
Golly, it’s rare to hear anything about PJ, thanks so much for sharing your story.
I'm new to this channel and loving it! You have the patience of a saint to listen to 45 minutes of berating by a clueless fool.
So glad you are enjoying! Thanks for the kind comment 😁 and yes part of the job I suppose?
This series is amazing! I love the idea of the "out of focus" shot...so clever! It so inspiring for a (mature - 50+) rookie like me to get a glimpse behind the curtain, of how these amazing captures transpire. Thank you and best wishes from Scotland.
So glad you enioyed. Thanks for the kind comment 😁
Thanks again Harry for such a great insight and such unique photos of PJ Harvey, hopefully see you in Aberystwyth in the autumn at the Eye, diolch.
Harry will be there- Come say hello!
And many thanks to you too for the nice comment 😊
This is a fantastic channel Harry and Fred! Makes a nice lunchtime tune in for me!!!
Haha we are more than happy to provide lunchtime entertainment. Thanks for watching!
I love your insights and obvious delight at being an authentic image maker, Harry. So many big fatuous egos in the trade. Love your simple approach too.
Thank you for the lovely comment! 😁
Always fun to hear the stories.
@@kevinsolie2208 thank you! Glad you enjoyed 😁
Your storytelling is as captivating as your photography, love this channel!
Thanks a lot. Really means a lot 😊
Great message at the end that applies to many aspects of life. Another great insight into the world of professional portrait photography. 👍
I agree. Thanks for the lovely comment 😁
Your amazing mate :)
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed :)
I live your stories! Thanks for sharing
Thank you!

She’s such a chameleon. Brilliant photos. Brilliant subject
Wow the blurry image. So good. Who would have thought!
Thanks for the kind comment! The cover did end up looking really nice I think. Rare for magazines to do something like that!
I am absolutely hooked on these videos, so much personality. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Very kind, we love to hear it!
Thanks a lot for the comment.
Thank you for the great story!
Thank you for watching! 😁
Thanks for sharing! This range of particular portrait styles is what still fascinates me in photography!
Thanks for watching!
this is an excellent video essay. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
In a cycle of an artist copying another, the photo of the model with a red hat is inspired on the painting The Corn Poppy, By Kees van Dongen c. 1919
such good photos - you inspire me every week
So glad you enjoyed. Love knowing these videos inspire someone! Thanks 😊
Just discovered this channel by chance on my birthday 🎉, absolutely loving it, l am passionate photography lover, and used to buy Select for the photography.
I am also a hobby photographer who is in love with capturing a moment in time. Thank you so much. Subscribed.
Looking to get some of Harry’s books , learning so much.
Have a great day.
absolutley true your last words about controlling everything. but we never give up to believe in situations and moments and catch them.
Thanks for the comment - and definitely! 😁
What a great story, thank you for sharing! That'll be a sub, and I'll start the hunt for getting a print of the portrait against the green wall - it's stunning!
Thanks a lot for the kind comment and sub! Hope you enjoy the past and future vids too! 😉
I am current rebuilding Harry's website where we will be selling prints of the pics featured on the channel - right now there are just lots of third parties doing it from over the years.
@@fredandharryborden hopefully the polly supermarket prints will be available
@fredandharryborden That's great to hear - I'll keep an eye on the new site for prints and enjoy working through some videos in the meantime!
Great one, cheers!
Thanks for watching!
I have such a good time with your videos. Thank you for sharing your stories Mr Borden (dunno if you're Fred or Harry, so "Mr Borden" should work).
great story as alwasys. funny to hear you lived in exeter like me and mentioned timepiece which was an old haunt from my uni days. you mentionend u had an OND. exeter college?
Brilliant
Thank you! 😁
that last 'degraded' image you showed is epic! Would make a fine album cover.
Polly's music is so so good. I always thought her more arty/avant-garde than pop, a bit surprised she's at such a celebrity-level that she requires controlling publicists. Seems like she just wants to do her thing....just so happens over the decades several million people really enjoy her thing, so i guess a side-effect of that is having less freedom to spontaneously hang out with a photographer. Also interesting that she doesn't have modern tech at her home...no internet? A character, for sure :)
Wonderfully insightful (and entertaining) as usual! Thank You. Prompted by your video this book: Steal like an Artist by Austin Kleon came to my mind. Maybe you've heard of it. Best regards. Tomás
Thanks for the comment. I haven't read it but not sure if Harry has. Will check this out for sure - Looks interesting!
Great video, thanks
Thank you! Appreciate the comment as always 😁
nice to. here a real story
I lived right above a Nisa when I lived in London. I'm too chickenshit to cross-process again. Do you remember what you did?
Will get Harry to respond personally!
It was mainly Kodak transparency film 100 ASA daylight. Put through a C41 process (to produce a negative).
Very contrasty! The images in the Nisa were B&W 35mm Kodak 3200 film and Tri X. 🙂
@@harryborden6077 oh no no i mean what did you do DURING cross-processing? Push or pull?
@@gnalkhere When it was negative film put through E6, I seem to remember pushing it 2 stops. On all the other cross-processing occasions, the film was put through at normal...🙂
@@harryborden6077 ahhh so process longer. Gotcha. Cheers 😁
❤❤❤❤❤
Hope you guys were listening a key aspect to great photography is access !
The print I would want to buy, is the one where you threw the original out (12:15). That's the one where the art happened. But you are only selling the other one!
Great stories BTW.
@@patrickdixon4945 thanks for the lovely comment. Once the website is done I'll be sure to include that one! I agree, that picture is amazing with a great story!
the photography is obviously excellent, but I watch these videos for the storytelling
Thanks a lot! I agree
Re the point about black and white "throwing away colour" or "nostalgia"... I agree with your point that it's non optimal converting a shot into BW because you have to. I have done this before, the lighting is not right, and it's a quick fix to a problem you can't really otherwise resolve. But I can't agree that converting to BW for artistic reasons is just "nostalgia". Don't you think BW is sometimes appropriate for the scene, the subject, or the atmosphere? We talk a lot about economy of colour, and BW can sometimes give you the ultimate in economy of colour can't it? Personally I rarely do go to BW now, as I'd rather get my colour usage bang on in the camera at shutter release. But just as I might tweak highlights, shadows, saturation etc., I don't see why it's mere "nostalgia" to play with an image in BW as well.
I wannt ask, did you have a photo shoot with Eva Geen?
I don't think Harry has, sadly
Saw her live a few days ago. She seems nice and kind despite what people assumed of her. Is she?
From what I have heard from Harry she was very lovely. They spent the whole day together just chatting.
@@fredandharryborden that is a refreshing thing to hear coming from the music industry. A lot of artists in it are uptight and about the money (which is their right) but the few like PJ who would sit and have a conversation is just a relief.
She’s like Ayers Rock
Your vocabulary is eclectic
Haha each video we make I hear a new word 😅 thanks for the comment!
5:18 don't think It's a Nikon. The frame numbers are upside down, looks like something that loaded from the right, presumably not a point and shoot but something, else?
One for Harry to answer. I'm not too sure! @harryborden
@@iNerdier The film could have been bulk-loaded upside down.
@@audioupgrades Unlikely. Would have to be threaded from the inside of the core to not be emulsion out.
@@iNerdierIf you got through a lot of film it was common to have offcuts. Loading it in the darkroom you would have felt the emulsion side but wouldn't have known up or down.
He does say…it a Hasselblad 500cm
xxx.
You murder me xxx.
I wonder - does the subject ever tell their publicists to rein it in and do what they like? For someone as creative as PJ You’d think k she want a lot of creative input. Or is it really the publicists that wield the power in certain situations?
Do you ever look back at your cross processed film and wish you would have just processed it normal?
Thanks for the comment and question! @harryborden
Bloody publicists eh?! The word bane comes to mind...
😅 So true - And thanks for the comment!
Publicists - they seem to be real pains in the rear end.
Totally! 😅
Ugh, the publicist. Literal hack, not unlike most present day “creative” directors.
Sadly true!
I think her music is excellent, but the fact she supports fox hunting makes me dislike her as a person.
