Hi again Harry! As an upcoming photographer, I really appreciate all of your stories behind your shoots, especially the troublesome ones. I appreciate all the insight and advice. You are such an awesome individual! I also love to see that you are creating this channel with your awesome son. Your relationship is really beautiful and inspiring.
I love this channel which I discovered through the National Portrait Gallery videos. What I enjoy most is Harry's generosity of spirit and the way he finds something positive out of most of his encounters. The insights on the celebrities and the gentle humour are great. Most of the technical information goes above my head but I've picked up a couple of tips. I like Harry's calm, deliberate delivery to the camera, and the conversation between Harry and Fred in the later videos. So pleased to have found you!
I think that you’re wrong about this shoot. I have listened to all of your episodes and by now got a sense of how you work and moreover a picture of the sensibility you have with your subjects… you shot Marianne in a different ‘prime’… (not the prime as you described as that of her in the sixties) but still absolutely a wonderful vulnerable portrait of her - and in that sense possibly the most storytelling and vulnerable portrait. An excellent portrait that simply didn’t coincide with your personal expectations. Great channel btw - thanks
We might all think she was in a different prime. The problem is that she might not think that. And that would play on any of her own insecurities at that time. I can understand why he might have thought it was the wrong thing to say at the time. Regardless, like the Clarkson photo, Harry Brought home the bacon again. That is the class of a truly great photographer.
I always tell portrait subjects …”my job is to reveal something about you visually”. And like Making America great again- and not defining what that is, or looks like…it’s interpretive!!😂
It's ironic that he mentions that he wanted to take a picture like David Bailey. Marianne has actually talked about how much she hated a picture that David Bailey took of her in the 90s. She talks about the photo towards the end of an Episode of Ruby season three episode nine. I actually like his photo better than Baileys TBH
I am a psychotherapist. We are trained not to answer questions like that. When someone asks you a question like that, they are trying to reassure themselves and increase their confidence. We usually just turn the question back on the person asking it. "I'm here for you. What's your motivation for this shoot?"
To be fair, your line regarding the Clarkson shoot, about "bringing home the bacon", would have worked better if you'd photographed Clarkson in a barn with pigs rather than lambs.
I love your channel and stories. So valuable and outstanding besides all this commercial content. I could listen to you every day (and somehow wish I could contribute/be meaningful just a portion of what and how you do)
I saw your comments and agree. I think they are fair! I was gonna say something to Harry but sadly didnt. I cringed a bit while editing lol. I would actually argue that although young Michael Caine was very photogenic in Bailey's pictures, his look when older is more iconic. But, maybe that just shows my age haha
@fredandharryborden Thanks. I agree, Harry’s portraits of older Micheal Caine are great. There's something about the weathering of faces over time that can be striking, iconic and yes, beautiful.
You are twisting their words. We all have a prime of our lives, usually when we are younger, being more energetic and at the peak of our attraction - whatever your personal albeit flattering opinion may be.
Cork hat. As an Australian, I can relate. TBF, I think during the first 32 years of my life, living in Australia, I never once saw someone wearing that daft paraphernalia. At least the photographer got a trip out to Australia (good, unless the magazine required them to pay back the airfare!) Silk purse / Sow's ear - a common expression in our parts.
I really enjoyed this video especially with Marianne’s recent passing. She must have been so scared at the time you were given the job: was this prior to ‘Broken English’ being released? If not, then maybe she may not have been so reticent. As for Cave, seeing him live with the Birthday Party in St Kilda, Melbourne I thought he was such a precocious private school pratt who behaved very badly; punk music notwithstanding. Mind you, I think he is a genius musically and we (including myself) were probably all a bit like that ag his age. Once again, I really enjoyed this video as well as your recent chat with the host of Photographic Life.
It's good to have the ambition to shoot the definitive portrait. That is what Harry has done with a lot of people, even if they have been photographed a thousand times by others. In art, though, I find you always jinx it by saying it out loud.
Have you released a video on Clarkson? Every time he's mentioned I think 'I must find out more about this lore', but have just had a quick look and got nothing. My curiosity is burning!
@fredandharryborden oh my god, I was curious before but now it's unbearable. Maker a patreon and make it members only! (yes, that is my way of saying I'll pay to see it)
@fredandharryborden Such a shame - I thought it was great. However, I did suspect you might be asked to remove it. Have there been any other instances of blowback?
No other blowback. The leg clarkson's PR had to stand on was i naughtily included some clips i filmed on the farm when we were only allowed to take stills. Lessons learned!
We've all been there Harry, I had disastrous shoot with Brian Wilson, if I could go back in time and redo just one portrait session it would be that one, all my fault btw.
Do you clear it with your clients that you’re going to just tell everyone about the shoot details after? If I caught my photographer doing videos like you do I’d be furious
@ These shoots are editorial and notoriously badly paid. (especially in the UK - The USA is better) The flip side is the photographers own the copyright of the images they make and are free to use them editorially (which I would suggest includes the content on our channel). If the company who commissioned the images, bought the rights or an advertising agency required a degree of discretion and the remuneration reflected that, then I would agree with you. BTW, the Independent Review magazine that asked me to shoot Marieanne doesn't exist anymore (the last printed copy was 2016) so there is no one to 'be furious' about our video!
You arent much of a photographer if you need people to be at their prettiest to get a good photo. Its really sad. Not pretty therefore a rotten photo??
She was vulnerable about losing her bloom. The photographs are beautiful.

Another great video guys, forgot you photographed Marianne Faithfull Harry. I loved her ‘Broken English’ album.
Cheers Bud. X
Begs the question of what really is "our prime"?
50mm for me lol.
Between 20 and 35.
Humans are ALWAYS in their prime. Faithful was always a stirring subject.
Humans are not always in their prime , obviously .

Yes, you're right a different kind of prime...
Agreed. Marianne was beautiful, period. I think she became more fascinating as she aged.

@@ashleyhoff7561 That's a very fair point. Thankfully we are not always the best judges of our own self image.
Thank you for another wonderful video!
Our pleasure! Thanks for the kind comment!

rubbish psychological manipulation. You do more harm than good playing games like that. Be honest, but don't be cruel.

Haha very true - he was going to show us his pigs but we had to go!

9:20 Nick Cave - "Jesus Harry - stop the lights" what an amazing photo!
Thank you! 🙂
@@harryborden6077 THe "stop the lights" was a nod to the Irish - some people will get the reference
You have to love a Roller Shutter door. Marianne Faithful Such a stunning looking woman but she did look so Vulnerable.
Michael Caine will be happy to know that he's considered "a sow's ear" ! 🤣
‘past their prime’ and ‘no longer beautiful’ 😬

I look forward to that bell going off every week. Thanks guys
Thanks a lot! Glad you are enjoying :D
The idea of contact sheet prints is awesome!
A great video lads. Well done.
Great video guys!
Thank you!
Another great video, thanks
Cheers Bob, as always!

My mum and her side are all aussies and there is a distinct lack of cork hats haha
Only Bazza McKenzie would be seen dead in one those cork hats. Only popular before insect repellent became available!
Interesting, as always.
Thank you!
That Nick Cave pic is astonishing!
Thank you! I love that pic - vid on him soon!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for commenting!
Hi Harry and Fred.
Another image from Harry's archive for the obits. Have a good rest of the week, fellas.

Good to see laminates. Still got my book full of them. It's dusty!
I've got several aluminium cased full to the brim. 🙂
@@harryborden6077 Yes! had my case made by some guys out in west London. Really nice job.
I love your work, but I wish you would leave the photos up longer than two seconds. They are not up long enough to actually absorb them.
I actually left them up a second longer on this one. Will try another extra second or two on the next vid!
@fredandharryborden why not leave them up for 10 seconds. That would be sufficient time to take in the image and we can still hear you talk 😁
I love the photos you took of Marianne! I don't understand your view of this.
The shell cottage looks fascinating , why outside and not an interior backdrop ?
I did think of that but the natural lighting (I didn't want to use flash) was non-existent.👍
Have you released a video on Clarkson? Every time he's mentioned I think 'I must find out more about this lore', but have just had a quick look and got nothing. My curiosity is burning!
Haha, we had one up. We were honest and fair. But, his PR wanted it taken down - we may re-release it in the future with some amendments! :(
@fredandharryborden oh my god, I was curious before but now it's unbearable. Maker a patreon and make it members only! (yes, that is my way of saying I'll pay to see it)

Ill speak to Harry see if we can lol

I'll be doing my Brian Wilson experience at some point! ;-)

It was almost 30 years ago! 😆 Interesting that you use the phrase 'my photographer'. As a free-lance, I don't belong to anyone!
@@harryborden6077 That doesn’t matter imo. Not how I meant the “my” either but whatever, I’m sure you knew what I meant

Silk purse/sows ear…as my mate always says, our job is to ‘see the good in things’,but yes, sometimes’things’ need polishing…ahem…
I had to waste the film on your mum… 😆

I feel sorry for her. I wonder what she did after you left? Curl up into a little ball?
