Your videos are really helping me out with my Freelander 2 sd4 just bought it going to do the gearbox oil change and the belts this weekend and give it a good service just done 113k now the car just make sure everything is renewed better to be safe than sorry
I have the same model as yours what Gearbox oil are you using? also what are you using for the rear Diff? I've done the transfer case and will do the haldex service soon with a Haldex kit
Hey bud. Great videos. I had a freelander 1, and just now bought a freelander 2. Those little drain pans are good. The reason it didnt drain quickly is because you still had the relief plug on at the top left not allowing air in. If you open that, it’ll fall straight through :) cheers
I have a 2008 LR2. Would the gearbox be on the passenger side for USA vehicles? Also, before changing, did your vehicle sound like a Diesel engine? Mine sounds like that for about the first 30 minutes of running.
Beavis where the drain plug is for the gearbox to the left is a threaded hole which looks like a bolt is missing as I have the same on my Freelander 2 2014 just wondering if you could help with this regards simon
Hi, any problems with the trans after the fluid change? I have a 2013 evoque with 125k miles. I want to change the trans fluid but a little cautious because sometimes the trans will slip after a fluid change i was told bc apparently there are metal fragments in the old fluid that will keep it from slipping..
You should change your oil every 60,000 miles! Don't change it if you've done over 100,000. This will likely ruin your transmission. Might as well keep your oil in there until the transmission goes. It'll do more bad than good
I can’t see how this could possibly be the case. New oil would always be a good thing. The gearbox felt much better afterwards and is still running fine.
@@BeavisPits if you wait to long, there will be particles of transmission in the fluid. These particles act like sandpaper and keep the trans from slipping. if you swap out all that with Super clean fluid, theres a good posibility it will slip.
I think you are talking about an automatic gearbox. Mine is a manual. Auto box is completely different and needs a power flush. This is much more involved and quite expensive. Not something the home mechanic can easily do.
Mine is a manual so I asked the facebook group if anyone knew how to do an auto fluid change. Joe Hodgson from JAS Land Rovers (www.jas-lr.co.uk) responded with... “There are drain and fill points but unfortunately only about 40-50% the fluid can drain at any time as the rest is held in the torque converter, valve block, and the oil cooler and pipes. The best way to replace all the fluid in one hit is with a machine - sometimes called a megaflush or transmission flush machine. Draining and refilling via the drain and fill points between 5 and 6 times with fresh fluid every time achieves about the same but costs around 3x as much in fluid alone.”
Thank you very much for the effort and reply! Perhaps I’ll fill and empty it myself driving it in between fluid changes although that sounds like it might take a long time and cost more then getting a garage to do it 🤷♂️
My freelander 2 is at 230 thousand kilometers and the transmission oil has not been changed at all. Is it okay if I change it? I changed the oil, will it break down?
Hi I spotted you are running BF Goodrich on your Freelander. What size are your wheels as mine are 235/60 R18. But they don’t do this size and they are really amazing tyres. Can you let us know how you did it?
@@johnwyatt2316 Just in case anyone else is reading this slightly confused this is a note to clarify things. For the manual gearbox pre-2011 models (like Scott's) the LR specification in Castrol MTF 97309. This is a 75w90 grade oil as is mentioned in the video. For post 2011 models the LR specification is Castrol BOT 350 M3. This is a 75w single grade oil.

Glad my video helped!

Good idea! I didn’t think of removing that. The oil still came out a bit too fast for me though!
Got this job to do tomorrow.... Been studying your videos to gain knowledge
How did it go? Glad my vids are useful.
You should pull the breather plug out of the oil catch can.
You can use a manual pump to fill the gearbox. Great video, I have all this to look forward to next year when the Freelander turn 10!
Again, really detailed and comprehensive video, cheers.
another great video and easy to follow. my list of jobs is mounting up.lol
Now I know how to go about getting this done. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the video. will be doing mine soon, noisy at the moment...
Lots of detailed info! Great vid, many thanks for making it.
Thanks for the nice video is the locations for both plugs same for Auto transmission
I’m not sure. Auto is quite different and really needs professionally flushing.
Gracias! me ha sido muy útil para mi Freelander 2 diesel. Saludos desde Chile.
Nice wheels and tyres
Thanks 👍
GREAT Video - Can l ask what size of tyres you have - they look brilliant!

Gearbox is same way round as mine on left and right hand drive. Mine is a diesel so always sounds like a diesel!
I'm taking it this is a manual. Is auto gearbox the same oil? And is the fill plug in the same place?
Yes, manual. Auto is different and needs power flushing at a garage. Quite expensive from what I’ve heard.
hey buddy this oil you show on here is it for manual or auto transmission?
thanks
Manual
What specs oil is being used for the automatic gear box?
pls advise, struggling to find company specs alternative oil for freelander 2 in india.
Look up part number LR002748
Great video 👍. I'm currently doing mine, was there a crush washer on the drain plug? I don't seem to have one on removal and thought that was strange.
Pretty sure my gearbox drain plug didn’t have a washer on it either
Beavis where the drain plug is for the gearbox to the left is a threaded hole which looks like a bolt is missing as I have the same on my Freelander 2 2014 just wondering if you could help with this regards simon
Is it not a threaded hole with a short bolt in from the other end?
Read the fluid level requirement beforehand. Always change washer, instruction nakl video though.

Have you changed the heldex oil aswell?
I’ve topped it up but not done a full change. On my list of jobs to do.
Have you got all 4 wheels up on ramps ??
No, because I’m doing this at home and only have two ramps

Hi I’ve just changed my gearbox oil for this exact comma oil and when it’s cold it’s very notchy when warm it’s fine did you find this also?
Yes, I find it too, but put that down to worn baulk rings, mine has done 155k miles

Change the gearbox oil. It is overdue and you will notice an improvement. Smoother gear change,
@@BeavisPits Thank you so much. i recently replaced it with dexron 3. gear shifts softened. Should I replace it with jws3309 instead of dexron 3?

Need to do mine, 2007 115k on clock.
Gear change was definitely smoother, not so clunky and crunchy
Question... my FL 2 has 300000km on now. I have never changed gearbox oil. Should I change it as it is working fine.
I would change it. Mine was working fine but after changing the oil the gear changes felt a lot smoother.
@@BeavisPits yours is a manual? Mines an auto, will it be similar? I wonder.
I think that's the wrong oil for the gearbox. That looks like the stuff for the diff & ptu, although some put a 80w90 in the diff. Gearbox takes 75w.
This is 75W90. This is the correct oil for the manual gearbox. The diffs are different...all three diffs use different oil.
I've looked and Halfords saying mvmtf but 75. Not 75w90. And the straight 75 also match for original bot 350 m3 oil
