      @@foristrothbert568 it's as if changing a character from a minority and marginalised group to a non marginalised group is a problem or something and different from the opposite for various reasons (representation, eraser, normally if they're a minority or marginalised group it has soke importance to the character, unlike with straight, cis, white, male characters, takes roles away from actors who already have less work, etc).

    • @mistercard3599

      @@charlestownsend9280 but you wouldn’t like it, that’s kind of the point. Doesn’t matter if it doesn’t happen, if someone did that to a character you liked you would have a problem with it.

    • @charlestownsend9280
      @charlestownsend9280 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@mistercard3599 not really, I didn't care when the doctor became a woman (although the reasons against that were even more stupid than usual, they're a shape-shifting alien) or when they made superman black or when they changed several characters in the mcu to female or from white to different ethnicities. If it doesn't matter to the character I don't really care if they do it, it doesn't change who the character is and adds more diversity and creates opportunities for actors who get less roles (because the vast majority of characters are straight, cis, white and male).
      It's only problem if it changes something about their character (which is rare as being white or straight or cis or male isn't normally that big an aspect for most characters, probably something to do with not being an oppressed minority or marginalised group who are constantly having their rights attacked and various other things, which leaves their lives and experiences not really being shaped as much by the fact that they are part of those groups of people), I can think of a couple of characters that would be a problem for. Or if it were the other way around (for previously mentioned reasons).
      So if it changes nothing about the character and adds more diversity and roles for actors (notbto mention potentially more story options, as you now have potential issues faced by those various groups that can be added to the story or character) what is the problem?
      Changing the one non white, straight, cis, male character and changing one of the many white, straight, cis, male characters are two very different things. One completely removes an entire group from being represented and the other doesn't.

    My answer to the question of "Why do they want to be the bad guy?" is simple: Money. That's where the money is and that's all they care about. If they can get clicks, views, ad revenue, donations, subscriptions, merch sales and more for being the worst version of themselves they can portray, it's done. Whether they actually believe anything they say is irrelevant, it's a message that either someone out there wants to hear and will support them for OR someone out there will use it to create their own content to call them out on it. And even if you do call them out on it - and I'm not saying not to - they STILL win because there will be people who go seek out the original content for context or just pure curiosity. Maybe there's an underlying agenda or a belief of some kind behind hateful content creation, but even if there is it doesn't actually matter to them because they can always just change directions on a dime. And even FOR a dime.
    It's just about greed, period.

    • @RoonMian
      @RoonMian ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob is slightly wrong on this. Jackie Chan did not cut off his daughter because she was lesbian. Jackie Chan was never in his daughter's life in the first place because she is the result of an affair Chan had, cheating on the woman who is still his wife. He never acknowledged her in the first place. That interview the daughter gave was about how the family who raised her cut her off for being lesbian.
      So, Jackie Chan is absolutely a piece of shit, just a different kind of piece of shit.

      People have been trying to adapt TMNT in that way since the early days of the 80s animated series. It never really works and if we're honest it didn't really work here, it's box office is shockingly low...not a measure of quality sure but suggests that this isn't what the general public want this property to be.
      There's always been a small but vocal contingent that want TMNT to be a pure comedy but it's appeal has always been the action/adventure genre with an emphasis on martial arts. Now we've gotten the second TMNT movie in a row to this (and the second that flopped) can we start approaching this the way that has consistently worked for the franchise.

What, exactly, has been the big deal?
    Yeah, taken as the whole the Sequel trilogy has some flaws and is kind of disjointed. Yeah, Obi-Wan feels a little gratuitous. And yeah, I still think Solo would have faired better as a Lando movie and Leia's corvette shouldn't have been physically present at the Battle of Skariff in Rogue One. But the rest? The rest was fun. Was entertaining. Was weird and wonderful and moving and exciting and fun and...well, everything I've loved about Star Wars since I was drawing X-Wings and TIE fighters in kindergarten.
    What, exactly, was there in all of it that has some folks so bent out of shape or crying "RUINED FOREVER!!!1!" that isn't either so trivial its easy to overlook or wasn't also a "problem" when Lucas did it? I'm literally as old as the franchise itself and been a fan of it as long as I've been alive. And I not only love the hell out of a lot of the new stuff, I wish we had it when I was growing up. Hell, I'm writing this waiting for the latest episode for Ashoka to release and honestly looking forward to it. Yet as I do you've got folks on social media ragging on a series that isn't even finished it for what can only be described as the stupidest or reasons and acting like it's mere existence is blight on humanity. Meanwhile, I'm still grinning like an idiot over that Rancor vs War Droid fight in Book of Boba Fett that looked like something straight out of a King Kong movie and clawing at the walls waiting for the next season of Bad Batch.
    But you hit the nail on the head and openly articulated something that's been cooking in the back of my mind for a while. Given how virulent, vicious, intense and in a lot of cases petty so much of the "criticism" levelled against...well, just about any geek or nerd properly has been from the...less than enlightened corners of the fandoms and internet has been, what exactly did any of those folks ever actually LIKE about the various properties or franchises in the first place? And if, by your estimation, recent incarnations are failing to do it for you anymore, why are you still here?
    It becomes more and more evident that so many of these "critiques" have absolutely nothing to do with the actual quality or content of the show, movie, or franchise in question and seem to be more a reflection of the viewer's own hang-ups, dysfunction and personality problems. And it's both sobering and depressing to see so many others giving them headspace and credence.

      It makes them money.

    • @GeneralBolas
      @GeneralBolas ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To understand this, I think we need to make a distinction between the major voices of this movement and the people who repeat/retweet/etc those opinions.
      The "thought leaders" of this are people who do it to make money. Some of them may be true believers. But many of them are people who are doing it to make money. They have these takes because they're courting an audience that is hungry for these takes. And they got stuck with this audience *because* they would give them these takes.
      This causes them to both radicalize their audience and are radicalized *by* their audience. Each time a new piece of "woke" media comes out, they are required to have a harder take than the last one. And this turns off any potential audience who don't want that, so their only fans are the worst people.
      If you are an outrage merchant, if your job is to sell people on the idea that *something* is wrong in society... what else can you do? You have outrage to sell, and you can't keep selling the same outrage. It has to be *more* outrageous.
      As for the followers, I believe a lot of them have a degree of internet brain poisoning. I encountered this myself with The Last Jedi.
      I like this movie. I enjoyed watching it. It has some *significant* flaws, but it's engaging in various places and has an ending I absolutely adore.
      But I can't watch it anymore. Why? Because when I do, I have the opinions of a thousand assholes rattling around in my brain nit-picking every Goddamn scene. I remember what it was like to watch the film unspoiled by their thoughts, but that's in the past now. These people have functionally made me incapable of enjoying a thing that I find enjoyable.
      Now, consider someone who maybe didn't find TLJ to be as enjoyable. Maybe it didn't click with that person, or the cons simply outweighed the pros. Overall, they might consider it subpar absent any other people's opinions.
      Now, add in the essentially inescapable cacophony of negativity around the film. What would happen to that persons' opinions about the film? Well, a merely subpar film now becomes *RUINED FOREVER!*
      And now, that person starts wanting some answers as to *why* this thing they'd been waiting for for 2 years was not just subpar, but completely terrible. And boy, do those "thought leaders" have some reasons as to why this happened. I mean sure, those reasons sound a bit silly and some are even vaguely bigoted. But they are reasons, and nobody else can explain it.
      That's one way people start down this path: the internet takes average or sub-par media and makes you feel like it's the worst film you've ever seen.
      As for why they're still here? That's obvious: they feel entitled to have their tastes catered to.
      They feel like Star Wars must be exactly what *they* want it to be. At all times. In the minds of many long-time fans, they are the ones who *built* the Star Wars franchise. They are the ones who *deserve* to have new media made for them. So if Star Wars isn't doing it for them, then clearly something is wrong with Star Wars.

I've never understood what Right Wingers like about any of it outside of incidental shit thats not core to the media.

    • @steampunker7
      @steampunker7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@frankm.2850 And that is, perhaps, the most toxic and poisonous effect of all this. That it makes some of us start to hate the things we do enjoy. Not necessarily because of any inherent flaws or problems with the media itself. As alluded to earlier, I am well aware that the Sequels, and even Star Wars in general for that matter, are not and never will be perfect. And in most regards I can overlook those hiccups and stumbles in favor of where it does things well or right.
      TLJ is, thematically and narratively, perhaps the strongest of the three films. Yeah, Canto Bight (though a pretty good sequence unto itself making the "hive of scum and villainy" be a glitzy, sleezy Vegas knock off rather than a seedy backwater port) feels a little superfluous and the set up for it could have been better. But having an old, grizzled Luke forced to finally face what actually occurred between him and Ben? Told Rashomon style till he practically has to have the truth beaten out of him? Because all these years he's been blaming himself for his own moment of weakness and screw up? Yeah, that's some of the best character and story work Star Wars has done in a long time (in the movies at least) and it still hits me hard. As does his confronting Kylo in the end yeah, that final shot? The kid pulling the broom to him with the force? What a great coda. Drives home the overall point of the film. That things are bad, the heroes of the past either can't or won't save us, and it's up to us no matter who we are to stand up to face them.
      Yet the dominating voices "criticizing" the film squawk about Rey being a "Mary Sue" or how Disney "Ruined Luke" or how much Rose "sucks" or a dozen and one other banal, empty headed BS reasons to crap on the film that...actually have nothing to do with the film itself.
      It's why, for the sake of my own sanity and enjoyment, I do everything I can to tune out anyone who uses any variation on "woke", "Kathleen Kennedy" or "continuity/canon" as their criticism. To me, it's the tip off that not only were they never actually "fans" in the first place. But they are using Star Wars (or any geek/nerd property for that matter) as the whipping boy for their own personality problems and issues with the world.

    Edit: Also, that they're reheating the leftovers of the Rise of the TMNT "outrage" over Black April, after the co-creator came out and confessed that April was ALWAYS biracial, that just wasn't important enough to their identity to make it into early adaptations is kinda funny? Though. Look, I'm not faulting anyone for cartoon crushes. Every generation has a couple cartoon characters that awoke something in a LOT of people. Late 80s/early 90s, you could do worse.
    That their first cartoon crush (which, I should remind you, is from a 20 minute toy commercial for CHILDREN) no longer being sexy as a PERSONAL ASSAULT well into adulthood? That's kinda worrying. That's the old 4chan "how am I supposed to fap to this" joke without any of the original irony. That the outrage over them "censoring" her for the recent beatem up kept using pervy fanart to try and prove their point instead of real screenshots (which also played out with Space Jam 2, thinking on it) shows that they're not alone here, but it's a brave man in his 40s that comes out and enthusiastically declares that a cartoon character is still a major part of their fantasy life. See its common for these people to say... “These devs are lazy, their game is unfinished & costs to much.” Offering no proof, technical knowledge or insider information. These statements are literally baseless. So one day I just asked “What are you basing that on”?
    Not only did a grown ass man lose his shit in his comment section. He cranked out a 20 minute video, which didn't address anything. Discussions of movies, games, books, comics, tv are toxic. That Chan story actually isn't true, at least not the way Bob presents it-yes Chan did abandon his daughter but not for being gay-he was never in her life to begin with, so the worst he's guilty of is being a deadbeat dad, which ain't great but it's sure as shit an improvement over being a bigot, we don't know if he has a problem with gay people or not, that whole thing was invented by the tabloids who don't actually care about his daughter at all.

    Why do they keep staying mad about it, Bob?
    Simple.
    *They're not mad about the Turtles*.
    They're not mad about Star Wars, or Trek, or D&D, or whatever nerd culture war bullshit they picked up this week.
    They're mad politically.
    Some undoubtedly were mad fans at one point, then got radicalized. Some saw the money and now this is their job and I don't need to quote Upton Sinclair on how it's hard to change the mind of someone paid to believe something. Some were always disingenuous actors, 4chan fascists or whatever else.
    But as long as nerd culture allows for people like to be viewed first and foremost as angry nerds and not first an foremost as angry, deliberate, dangerous fascists who are using nerd culture as a Trojan horse for their actual hate and bigotry, they will keep getting away with it.
    I simply don't care how many of them will insist otherwise. Because, if this wasn't fundamentally about identity and/or partisan politics, they would talk about stuff they love too. They wouldn't all be in lockstep about the latest culture war grievance. They wouldn't be repeating the same talking points. When it was debunked they'd actually be happy about it ("Yay, so Splinter wasn't queer!") They wouldn't adjust their volume and their persistence on topics based on what was trending.
    It doesn't matter in their individual cases when it became about their politics. Now, it just is.
