You are a razor honing master!!! The stuff it takes to do all this and the cost involved is overwhelming but I have learned so much so far and I’m gonna keep watching your stuff and will work up the courage to try it myself eventually

Thanks for watching, and the kind words Justin. There certainly is a commitment, but I do view this as a hobby. I started with straights, but usually recommend a couple of shavettes for or the open-edge curious. My first choice would be the costly Feather DX using a Feather ProGuard Blade which minimizes injury risk. My second choice would be a Focus R21 Evo 1/2 DE, which can be had from The Superior Shave for around $10. It has a recessed blade holder with corner guards also minimizing risk.
Either way if you take the jump, start out a shave using lowest angle, lightest touch on the ‘first pass only’, with ‘cheeks only’ downward strokes almost to the jawline then finish the shave with another tool. Never rush and once you are comfortable you expand your routine.
      Take care.

Yes. Start almost flat and tip the razor into your face at the minimum you can get away with. Steep blade angles make things harder to control and more irritating.
I gave a guy one of those R21 Evo razors who was looking to try the open edge. He committed to developing his techniques shaving with it daily for 100 shaves. At around 20 shaves you get a bit more comfortable with the handling. The nice thing about a shavette is you can take the blade out and practice different gripping techniques better.
When he was done, he found out like many of us that all our shaves improved regardless of the tool we used.

I read your post this morning and have been thinking about it all morning while driving to Calgary. BillM has addressed the actual shaving side of your question. Allow me to briefly comment on the honing side. 1. Don’t over think the process of honing and equipment. 2. Start simple. Get a couple of Gold Dollars or Union Razors and the ubiquitous Norton 4k 8k combination synthetic stone. These items will set you back about $100.00. 4k is suitable for bevel setting (although 1k is preferred) and 8k is suitable minimum for finishing. As monies allow, you’ll move on to other and better hones and razors. Many beginners have started with such a set up (such as myself 9 years ago). 3. Watch good videos of honers who advocate these simple beginnings. May I recommend geofatboy from 7-9 years ago who demonstrated the use of the Norton 4/8. Don’t get overwhelmed. Start simple. Getting started is more than half the battle.
Here, I found geofatboy for you.

@@longhaultanker hey thank you for putting though into this and replying!!! It really means a lot and that’s great advice I didn’t know I could get a stone good enough that was reasonable and starting off with less expensive razors is also a super idea so I can learn how to put a shave-able edge on it and then move into nicer stuff later… thanks very much

I think the Edge Pro would be great to use.
Do you have the Low Angle Adapter?
Or is that for the Wicked Edge System? 🤔

    • @billm.2677
      @billm.2677  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Probably Wicked Edge on the adapter.
Since the EdgePro doesn’t have a clamp it allows the stone to achieve a ‘spine AND edge’ contact.
While suitable to create some sort of a bevel to spine relationship on a crappy GoDollah, I would not try it on a traditionally appropriate razor.
The biggest pitfall is the small amount of play in the rod slide mechanism. When that play is cantilevered out an angle variable is magnified. Then if one tries to hone with a 3 point contact I’m not sure there would be a constancy I’d be happy with.
Years back, there was a guy who honed up a razor where he pitched up the angle so the stone didn’t hit the spine. I’m not too hopeful, but I might try it one day.
      Thanks for watching.
