i discovered poppy through pewdiepie in like 2016 or 17 when she was doing weird YT skits and everyone would have a laugh or be weirded out and now shes dropping banger of an album. what a timeline
yes. i knew her for videos too. she did a collab w/ grimes and thats how i started listening to Poppy. she's now one of my faves. im totally not a fan of Zig so i love this went in directions i like.
@@miked4309 ikr wasnt really a fan of zig too (i like it's pop/electro side but it not as metal/rock adjacent so, yeah...) but you can really feel its traces in some tracks like push go and vital and crystalized.
@@yas7689 i love churchoutfit and i thought the whole album was going to be dance music like the Prodigy which it wasnt. the reason i dont like zig is b/c there is no up tempo and the lyrics are kind of generic. i love her synth pop. i can totally get into that as long as its moving.
been a poppy fan since i disagree i love all her music sm but negative spaces has got to be her best, i love the entire albums there's no skips, halo is the best ending track ever i sat there crying a little bit after it ended
I’ve loved poppy since her early days of off putting videos and pop music and despite many fans straying away after her turn to metal I’m glad to have stayed a true poppy seed and I’m glad to see new fans getting into her music because poppy is great!❤
I discovered Poppy when a music rag ran an article that compared her to BABYMETAL (with her song, "X") and instantly curious, I checked her out, which led to a deep dive into all her work. I was blown away and decided that she was going to be an artist to follow. I was so right.
I don't know what TH-cam was thinking but Poppy's music video 'X', just randomly appeared on my home feed. It was my first metal song and I've been following her ever since.
i love this album. its very similar to Flux b/c she plays so many decades/genres. she goes from madonna to hole to nin to LUSH to nitzer ebb to knocked loose. 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s covered. my 2 faves are crystalized and the center is falling out. polar opposites.
I hugely enjoyed this album and your reaction. I agree that JF has really helped showcase Poppy's vocal skills more than anyone else, and also encouraged more developed / extended tracks. As you say, her chest voice should have Shirley Manson quaking and the first song is just spectacularly awesome. That sound in Halo you commented on around 41:21 is a reversed sound. If you reverse the track, it is a cute little unprocessed music box playing what sounds like part of twinkle twinkle little star, but not to the same beat as the song- which is classic Poppy. What I like the most about this album is that it will really extend Poppy's appeal. I love Zig to bits personally, but I can understand why others found it too niche. Negative spaces is just hit after hit. Exploring it is reminds me of when I first discovered I Disagree, except as you say, this is a more mature bit of work. It still feels like a classic Poppy journey though, and the fact we have everything from Madonna Ray of Light to Dillinger post-hardcore chaos helps that feeling. The whiplash between "The centre's falling out" and "hey there" is great fun. It's almost like she is concerned the post-hardcore may have damaged us and we need to decompress........ 🤣🤣
I became a fan after I first heard her in Dead Flowers with Health. Her vocals def caught my attention and this album I think really lets her shine in different areas.
I love poppy music since 2016, she is my favorite artist and i love this new album because is her best yet and for me it's better than I Disagree. Poppy is so creative, talented and unique for metal genre
I wish Yesterday was a full song cuz HOW did they make an interlude that's better than some of the songs here. The album overall is by far her best work. Vital and Halo have been on constant repeat.
Does anyone at all notice her banshee screams are literally Thy Art is Murders first EP(Infinite Death)? It's insane if you give this a listen with her screams and play that album after, i absolutely love that vocal style and am so happy she's bringing them back
First, I am a huge Paramore fan, with their early / mid work being my most favourite sound of any genre. I have always wondered, as I got into heavier music, how Paramore would sound if they leaned more metal. They already had a good foundation from their first album, All We Know Is Falling, and Zack Farro's drumming has always been heavy enough for metal. Speaking of drumming, Ralph Alexander has only gone up in my subjective opinion and deserves a mention. I love his work on the Eat EP the most and, ever since that, he is up there with Mario Duplantier and Alex Bent. I just love some of the 'little things' they do on the drums. I still remember when I heard Poppy for the first time, with I Disagree. My mind shot straight to Paramore, among other things as the song progressed. I have heard and read quite a few people talking about Poppy's influences and 'what this or that song sounds like', yet no one has pointed out how much her pop-alt-rock-punk sound is like the eraly / mid Paramore. The title track sounds almost like something out of their Riot! or Brand New Eyes albums or some of the B sides. The interludes reminded me straight of the interludes from the Paramore album. So do the guitars at times, their ring / hazyness, like in Surviving on Defiance (I know, shoegaze / Deftones) and Halo have a Paramore / Singles Club EP sound, think of Be Alone, Daydreaming. They sound almost unrefined, simple or not processed enough, yet pleasant, melodic and full of purpose. 'It burrows like a summer tick // Embeds itself to make me sick' from The Cost of Giving Up not only borrows the lyrical cotent (which in Paramore's turn is a cover of Failure) but the line delivery is pure Hayley Williams from Stuck on You. Vital sound in the same ball park, as noted by David, more Icon for Hire / Sumo Cyco. Push Go is a straight mixture of that, Sum 41's punk metal and all David named. I am not saying those songs are purely Paramore, just like Have You Had Enough, They're All Around Us, Nothing an New Way Out are not purely Bring Me the Horizon / Architects / Slipknot / Disturbed / Spiritbox. There are a lot of influences and tributes weaved into them and I love how straightforward it is to hear the ones you have grown up with, yet the Poppy quirkyness is everpresent. As some random examples, I swear I can hear guitars coming straight from an In This Moment song or the chugginess from Born of Osiris' Tomorrow We Die Alive in some places. I completely agree with the general closing off thoughts on the video with only one addition. Poppy's voice has gotten better but those screams that break into a cry (like the banshee scream from Suffocate) are a collector's item that both fill and tear my soul at the same time. The multiple choruses comments David made remind me of how I felt listening to As I Lay Dying's Awakened by Fire album for the first time. I just wonder how many of those influences are true and deliberate from Poppy's sideand how many are from the fact that she is about the same generation as me and has grown up with the same type of music. In any case, I struggle to pick a favourite song. My face still hurts from playing They're All Around Us one early morning, when it came out, thinkig it was more New Way Out and maintaining a stank face through the whole song. I love the refereces in New Way Out and the already mentioned connection with Paramore in The Cost of Giving Up (also that chorus is too Stuck into Me). Have You Had Enough and Nothing decide to alter between giving me Poppy's low singing voice I adore (some Cristina Scabbia vibes) and melting my face off with her high (and rare low) screams.
Love this album. If you think about it, both Poppy and Linkin Park released an album sampling different versions of a bunch of different genres they've touched on in previous work all put together, on the same day, and both are great. Instead of flying through several genres in a single song like she often did on I Disagree, now songs are more contained in different genres and when the bridge or outro mixes different genres it's more seamless. There's a lot of vocal melody choices and cadences that felt classically poppy, which kept the record feeling cohesive despite shifting subgenres with each song. I'm so glad that's true because I was worried it would be TOO generic based on some of the singles, but there's a lot more variety in the deep cuts. Some of her best and most personal lyrics too. I think it's a 9 for me because while it doesn't redefine the genre or anything there's just no skips for me.
I don't get the comparison to Avril with "vital"... Iv been laughed at but I swear it sounds like Hilary Duff's "Fly" era when she went into pop/rock sorta territory, especially the high vocals & simplistic notes....
Fully agreed; I don’t understand why everyone loves it. Emily is a mediocre singer at best, can’t scream for shit, and she’s a scientologist (a church that doesn’t believe in mental health pretty much) in a band whose lead singer killed himself, there’s no emotion and the songs are bland. Just straight mid.
Why exactly was the LP album disappointing for you? I feel like it pretty much summarizes what Linkin Park is with all its different Genres. Of course, there are also some tracks that are just not my taste (like Over Each Other), but also so many bangers like Heavy is the Crown, Casualty, Two Faced or IGYEIH…
Ehh, I'm not saying this album is bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I think last years Zig was better in pretty much every way. Kinda wish she went more in that direction on this LP, instrumentally at the very least. The interludes are honestly the most interesting tracks here, which is kind of a shame.
Surviving on defiance its absolutely gorgeous
i discovered poppy through pewdiepie in like 2016 or 17 when she was doing weird YT skits and everyone would have a laugh or be weirded out and now shes dropping banger of an album. what a timeline
Those YT skits were so good! Some of them had a deeper meaning too but people were too weirded out to pay attention
yes. i knew her for videos too. she did a collab w/ grimes and thats how i started listening to Poppy. she's now one of my faves. im totally not a fan of Zig so i love this went in directions i like.

"Nothing" is the best fucking song
The center’s falling out?
This is literally my song of the year!❤
" can you tell me what do you want from me when nothing is enough for you?"
her highs in the chorus with the flickering synth is heaven... u get it.
Evanescence right ?))))

lots of poppyseeds commenting.
At first, i wasn't the biggest fan of the early 2000s punk tracks....then realized how CRAZY i was bc Vital/PushGo ROCK
The scream at 0:49 in The Center’s Falling Out cured my depression
Sometimes that's what it takes! lol

Surviving on Defiance is so underrated! Love it
Really enjoyed this album!
Also - never actually said it but - love your lighting and color grading! Looks great!

"Vital" has become my entire personality.
Right?!? SLEEPER HIT
It's a good track

The Title track totally sounds like Celebrity skin by Hole.
Very much. I gotta wonder if it was an homage.
Yes, very much
The last song was so unexpected & a good emotional end. Love the harsh vocals & the soft moments on this album.
Great reaction man! Definitely the album of the year for me ❤️🔥

The opening of "Have You Had Enough?" is very Curve.
i saw Curve back in the day. love them. the opening track sounds like Nitzer Ebb at the beginning. .
This Album is way out of my Expectation, this to much 🤩🤩🤩🤘
i love it, fresh AF
Poppy's best album to date. And all of her material is good perjod, so Negative Spaces is especially a good treat for us Poppy Seeds
I cannot stop listening to this album and the new Linkin Park album. Both released on the same day. What a great week for music.
Push go has got to be the most awesome song I’ve ever heard
Hooked on vital and nothing
YAYYY

25:26 okay i need a poppy x alpha wolf collab right now
“nothing” is literally perfectly structured, and I still can’t with the chorus! MY SONG OF THE YEAR! THE PRODUCTION ON THIS RECORD IS NEXT LEVEL!❤❤
Negative spaces reminds me of L7 and Garbage vibes
Oh yeah I can definitely hear the Garbage influence
I feel like I'm the only one who's fav is push go 😅🙌🏽
I don't get the comparison to Avril with "vital"... Iv been laughed at but I swear it sounds like Hilary Duff's "Fly" era when she went into pop/rock sorta territory, especially the high vocals & simplistic notes....
I was just telling someone else this as well. i totally get what your saying 😊
@lea.christine. right!? And it's in the best way possible!! 😂
Have you had enough gives me similar energy to stabbing westwards song shame.
This album made up for how disappointing the new LP album was tbh
Fully agreed; I don’t understand why everyone loves it. The best f*** album 2024
