I read where these have a little heater built, pretty neat. On my sealed half gallon tank that ran for several years it really was not a big deal to just seal off the system with a lid that could be lifted occasionally for feeding/ frag work and that refreshed the inside air/co2 balance just fine. Topoff doesn't have to be a hassle for these, getting a fitted glass lid for at least the top portion might help if evap was pretty bad.
I run a 4 gal pico. Tiny tanks are fun! Couple of notes here. Get yourself an ATO and even look at an AWC. The cost is ridiculous for a small tank but it makes maintenance simple. I use an Auto Aqua AWC and replaced the stock impeller pumps with mini diaphragm pumps so they don’t have to fit in the tank. Daily water changes of a couple hundred mills will keep that tank sparkling. Throw in some small snails (turbos are good) and maybe a tiny Hermit and the glass and bottom will be pristine (it’s almost impossible to get a glass cleaner in a tank this small). Feature some sexy shrimp or small crabs. Consider a couple of milimetres of sand substrate - flow in a tank this small is tough and crap will build up. Some sand and a Stromb or conch to clean it makes it look a lot more like a real tank. Finally - frag disks and plugs DO NOT WORK in a tank this small. They take up valuable real estate and look awful. It instantly kills the illusion that this is just a regular tank. Frag off those encrusting corals onto some rock rubble and they will look a million times better.
Love the bonsai layout with the sps. One of your coolest builds. I will be very interested to see if it will last 6 months, because keeping parameters stable looks extremely challenging with that small of a tank.
I've been auto water changing every hour my nano and lowboy with the rest of my 500g system to make them pseudo-part of the main system and has made life much easier rather than hard plumbing everything. Works well if you have a controller or even something like the Auto Aqua AWC.
That is a cool little tank. I would put some maxi mini carpet/rock flower nems and some sexy shrimp and porcelain crabs in it!! Would be super cool and easy maintenance
Hi Jake, I'm new to you but I've been watching you on TH-cam over a year now. I've decided to comment today. I was in an aquatic pet store back in 2003 who had several of those mini tanks and their still running to this day. The store is located in Fountain Valley, CA off of Warner Blvd.
Saw someone on reddit about 4 months ago on r/reeftank do it in a peanut butter jar. Said he did a 90% water change every night with his water from his other reef tank (dont know the size) and that it was about 30 fl. oz.
I would add an additional overflow from the sump to a drain and then run a dosing pump from a big salt water reservoir to the tank. Then you can easily do a slow 100% water change everyday and not have to worry about dosing or waste export
This hobby was just introduced to me, this video did a great job at explaining the details of a nano tank. I want to build something similar maybe with 2 gallons. What would I need to start off? What are the main priorities to making sure this is a healthy environment? Thanks!
Yea, I’ve got a 0.0000000000000001 millilitre tank with a great white, black tip reef shark, tessalada eel, blue ribbon stingray, manta ray, green sea turtle, and a 75lbs bumblebee grouper. Unfortunately I had to remove my blue hippo tang as people thought it was unethical for him to have so much space.
Oh my god I was NOT prepared. I thought the thumbnail was a composite image and the tank was 2-3 gallons and I was wondering why you put paving stones in the tank... which turned out to be frag plugs!
Wow.. that's awesome ✨🌸🏵️ can put on the work table.. or study table.. etc.. cool things to have.. ✨ add a bit of live sand and put in a tiny dory too it will make it completely perfect!
Very nice choices in stocking, not a tank I would go for but I'm happy to watch you take it on 😂 It's so much smaller than I ever imagined. The photo from the community post was, as you probably planned, illusion-esk
Man This little tank has a better filter than my secondary 10 gallon tank It literally has a diy aio built out of clear walmart acrylic with the pump from the hang on filter glues in I even have the filter Midian from the canisterfilter in my main 75 gal
PNW stands for Pacific Northwest, sorry but I cringed each time hoping you’d say the entire word haha. Harley is definitely creative though, big props to him
U could always turn the canister's pump off and place a small DC return pump inline pulling from the canister and pushing it thru the SCWD giving more water flow rate and allowing water to alternate.
Will you do a video showing the mods you made to the pico? I like what you've done to increase the water volume and the stand pipe idea along with your future ato alternative. A video showing these would be cool! :-)
say i did want to throw one coral in there and call it done, just enough sand to cover the bottom if any, simplest rock with a beginner coral. what do i need to look out for
Come to our Reef Tank Party: reefstock.show/denver/
Halocaridina rubra shrimp would appreciate this more than the sealed " ecospere" they come in!
This man deserves to be here more than many of us. Rest in peace.
What happened?
@@GorgeousFaustinahe died suddenly likely from a heart attack
@@apdroidgeek1737 whats his name??? Cuz the channels still uploading
@GorgeousFaustina Jake Adams it's still running cuz the channel is owned by multiple people. It's like a publishing company.
Trust me,you can fit a blue tang and two clown triggerfish in there,no problem.
funniest comment lmfao
I think a tiny dory and a tiny nemo really great
What about a Sohal? I promise I am going to upgrade to 1 gallon tank next month.
Also a eel
Ok I'll get one
That is pretty cool, let's see if it's stable enough to keep anything long term. Definitely more for a challenge than value for sure.
Would love to know if its stable or not
So awesome of you to help out Scott! Really cool hobby when people are so quick and willing to help someone recover what they lost.
Dude you just gained so much support from me. That’s awesome to help out Scott rebuild his reef!
Wife said I couldn't get a fish tank but she didn't say I couldn't get a mini fish tank
So amazing to see the community helping each other out. Happy Scott has guys like you to help him out, I was gutted to hear about his troubles.
Scott’s video was heartbreaking - so glad to see you’re going to help him out!
What is Scott’s channel if he has one

Jake. Thank you for mentioning Scott. We don't know what he went through, but it had to be pretty bad to keep him away from his tank for 6 months.
Huge respect for you Jake and your support for the hobby and helping local reefers back on their feet!!
just dip it whole in tyhe big tank to do a 100% water change.
Lol.
This but unironically lol
Well it would be more of a 99.0000000009 percent water change.
But really, 😂
Whats funny is that it might actually work hehe
That was great to hear you speak about Scott. Awesome to hear your going to help him out. Thats the true old school of this hobby.

here also 10L tank
I disagree, I first saw these pico tanks with small frags of the right types of corals. That is what caught my eyes about them in the first place.
Hats off for the generous offer to @MileHighReefers. You're both true ambassadors to the next generation of the hobby.
we need updates on this micro reef!! :D
Love the bonsai layout with the sps. One of your coolest builds. I will be very interested to see if it will last 6 months, because keeping parameters stable looks extremely challenging with that small of a tank.
Please keep updating! I really like it. Did you think of doing frequent water changes from the big tanks? Seems easier then dosing.

I'm glad to see more and more pico setup! Had a 3gal for years and that was a challenge
Stoked to hear Reefstock will be back! Absolute must to get tickets again. And I still rock my 2019 shirt.
HAHAHA when you test the water it’s a water change ! 😂👌🏻 I need one

Where can this be purchased?
Would be cool to see an update on this guy!
When gluing your reef pieces of coral, what are you using for glue, and does the saltwater affect it or, your coral's?
Those SPS are tiny!! They make a really great contrast!
Can't wait to see al the product vendors making this a $5,000 tank! 🤣 - Super cool, though!
Can you post an update video on the pico? Curious how the corals are doing and if maintenance turned out as low as planned
thought the thumbnail was photoshop til I finally got watch the video hahaha!
Add a tiny, tiny LED grow light (2-4 diodes) to the sump area, give it a refugium.

Thank you so much for your support!
how are your corals todays in this pico tank ?
Damn I knew it was small in the IG post but not THIS small
what’s the light called in the tank you showed in the beginning?? i need a better light for my corals

That pico looking better than my tank lol
I had a sqwd back in the day! Thought it was so cool having a back and forth wave! So cool Jake
It’s a unique teeny weeny ‘marine tank’

Oh my god I was NOT prepared. I thought the thumbnail was a composite image and the tank was 2-3 gallons and I was wondering why you put paving stones in the tank... which turned out to be frag plugs!
You need to add a copepod/amphipod or two as a cleanup crew to the pico pico tank!
They're already in there hitching along with the corals
I would like to try and grab one of these at Aquashella this year in Orlando ^_^ Really cool to have a proper look at it! Thank you!
Definitely gonna get one of these for my work desk
That's the prime tank for the teachings of Takashi Amano. I'd go iwagumi style with some GSP and three perfectly placed stones
That is adorable !
Can’t wait to see an update! What about a 1g pico with 20g sump 😂
Jake my man! Do you have the link where we can buy that? Thanks yo!

Where can I buy those rocks? What are they called? Starting my 75 gallon chilids aquarium
Is there a top for it? Also is there a heater?
This makes me feel great about the 3 gallon pico I’m about to start on lol
U could always turn the canister's pump off and place a small DC return pump inline pulling from the canister and pushing it thru the SCWD giving more water flow rate and allowing water to alternate.
I’m thinking a shrimp or a pompom crab would be cool in there.
Hi , what about water change? How often and how much ?
Hi, where can I buy this item? tks
Where can I buy that neon pointer?
Where can we buy this?

How to you buy the coral for it?
I think it needs a fuge in the sump. Maybe one strand of chaeto would do it.
possible for 1 clam or not stable enough?

I actually will because the light may be weak but it's so CLOSE to the tank that it might be getting up there

mass evaporation and massive sways in ph, ammonia etc..

You should try the Cobalt EXT inline pump to give the SCWD some more juice. Just to see what happens. lol
how much mainentance they need? i would love one next to me on my desktop
I still have one of those scwd! Don't have the box though.
