It can never be the same was written a while ago and was included in previous tours/gigs. Robert wrote it when his mother passed away... later his Dad and his older brother died too. His elder brother is the one that introduced Robert to music with bands like Captain Beefheart etc.
The intro of Alone makes me think of interstellar noises….. as if we were lost in this world…. Robert loves astronomy and I think that's what he wanted to convey. Anyway, that reminds me of that! Nope ?

i've watched a lot of live cure over the years, but i'm struck by how nervous and vulnerable robert seems here. pacing before he sings, the different emotions playing over his face. looking at the crowd. questioning everything. and then singing a new song about questioning everything. simon and reeves clearly have a great chemistry and that's also a joy to watch.
He did this often during the 2018-2019 shows I've watched on youtube. Good observation tho to me he seems to be gearing up to the final second before saying anything. Getting in THE ZONE before a show like most artists of longevity tho they usually do it before walking out lol. Him pacing the stage before song 1 is like his way of saying hello/greeting the fans in the crowd - happened during all the recent shows I've seen on youtube. Robert, a lucky lucky privileged guy doing things on his own terms (without bothering others) creatively with some ROI.

'Alone' is an interesting new song from The Cure. It is giving me hope that the forthcoming album is going to be special. Lovely to see them open with a long instrumental section of this song. It kind of reminded of Cocteau Twins at the start- the guitar and keyboard sounds, particularly.
I was at one of the concerts of that tour. That was the opening song. I was crying like a baby ❤ so much sadness and beauty at the same time. Only music can to this.

I'll play it many times again over the next twenty years. Robert's voice reminds me of the Best of album of The Cure that we played in a house that I shared with two other people. I have not been so enchanted by a Cure song since probably Disintegration, maybe Wish. I adore every note of this song. I have a feeling this new album is going to deliver on everything Robert has said about it. I’m incredibly excited for the new album and the U.S. tour.
@@incendiaryAMCN Bloodflowers was a great album....I think for me its only detractor was that it was 'too' acoustic????? Otherwise, a modern day Cure-sounding masterpiece.....all of their albums since Disintegration have those songs in them....some more than others.
I always wanted to see them live, but was really prompted to when I saw their Grammy performance of 'Lovesong' in 2019, I think. He sounded great and still hasn't lost any of it by 2022. What a talent. PS. This new one is absolutely great.

@@CURLmusicTV yeah, not so sure either, I maybe jumped the gun a little bit, I liked the strings and Disintegration sparkles, but sounds a bit repetitive, I think they need something to break the bleakness of it all, and lyrics are a bit tired. Somewhere between Wish and Bloodflowers, certainly better than recent previous efforts.
All three songs so far indicate a masterpiece. I'm incredibly excited to hear how they recorded and mixed it. And I have noticed that Reeves tends to play the Fender VI on the new songs, which is quite fascinating already. TBH, when I heard the new album would be relentlessly doomy, I had hoped for a return to the shattered ice of Pornography - but what I am hearing is already so profound, I'm just unwrapping presents and throwing paper around.
I dont think they could make an album like Pornography....Robert's voice isnt like that anymore. They could make a similar album with the same basic elements in tow but it would never sound like Faith or Pornography because that left them with their youth. Ill take this version.
Pornography is so underrated in their cataloge. Everyone praises Disintegration as their masterpiece, but the album that brought me into The Cure and touched me the most is Pornography.

A gig where I was captivated from the very first track, Alone, followed by Pictures of You. I could have quite easily gone home then fully satisfied. An honour to have been at Birmingham - a gig that will long stay in my memory.

Robert Smith when asked about the album and the rumor of it's darker themes:
"He admitted the sound of the album had been affected by family bereavements: “It’s very much on the darker side of the spectrum. I lost my mother and my father and my brother recently, and obviously it had an effect on me.
“It’ll be worth the wait. I think it’s the best thing we’ve done, but then I would say that. A lot of the songs are difficult to sing, and that’s why it’s taken me a while."
