As someone who is just starting out playing gypsy jazz rhythm guitar, this video and one that I watched previously have been immensely helpful...your explanations and demonstrations are perfect Thanks
From the bottom of my heart, I need to thank you. I have been struggling to get a good pompe sound, watching tutorial after tutorial....and NOBODY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT USING TWO FINGERNAILS!!!!......problem solved!...again, thank you.
Great video - very helpful re: upstroke because I have been having trouble with that. It has caused difficulties for me in keeping good time - so I will just focus on the downstrokes!
mmh most of the things i agree, but i am a follower of the style in alsace, so the rhythm is not always wrong or right, its more ok and not ok and this depends on the mood you are in? ok i confess i am a strong follower of tchavolo!
Great video Christiaan, good tips about jamming, even tho, after all those years of rhythm playing, I feel ashamed to find myself in your DO NOT !! :( I will correct that straight away.. Keep Swingin'
Christiaan van Hemert you're right! I just need to find a polite way to refer them to it. Like you said in your video, it's hard to say 'you're doing it wrong'
Interesting with the nail thing. I use my nails to play rhythm for a silky sound with lower volume, I use pick in connection with my nails when needed for a higher volume, still keeping the soft silky rhythm. I thought I was the only one doing that as a reminiscence from my folk/picking background, it seems to be a common thing then?
I was tickled to see the nail technique presented. I figured it out on my own too, but wasn't sure if it was a proper thing to be doing. Thrilled to learn my intuition was correct.
If you get the sound you want that is the most important thing of course. Though I suspect that you could get a slightly punchier sound by NOT hitting the strings with your thumb. You could try it out by slowing down and observing your right hand to see how you could avoid hitting the strings with your thumb.
I know, I'm just a grumpy old man. Our local jam was lead by a sax player, he liked that noone else wanted to solo but the cloth eared. Of course I would be honoured to play with you if I were prepared, ashamed if not.
I do understand what are you talking about, but sometimes when you talk too much, some beginner jazz guitarist would find it hard to understand you. Just a suggestion, try to less talk and show more notations/tabs to the beginners

Thanks Stuart!
I definitely know a few people who need to see this video...
Spread the word! The more guitar players see this video the better the jams will become!
Christiaan van Hemert you're right! I just need to find a polite way to refer them to it. Like you said in your video, it's hard to say 'you're doing it wrong'
The pick is a pig 🐖 in the captions. Excellent instruction with humorous edges!
Thanks Christian! Do you have a patreon account? Your content is awesome! Thanks again!
Thanks Elias. I do have a pattreon: www.patreon.com/ChristiaanvanHemert

Most good rhythm players do this, sometimes even without realizing it. That's why there fingers have black stains above their nails after playing!

I figured it out on my own too, but wasn't sure if it was a proper thing to be doing.
Thrilled to learn my intuition was correct.
I use my nails in together with the pick as well. I also hadn't realised it was good practice.
Nice one, just noticed I have the habit of doing extra stroke every few bars. Will cut it out!! =))
Thanks!
That big chord upstroke, fine when you make that eyebrow expression, had to laugh. One thing my thumb gets blacker than my fingers, is that OK

rate Jean Barault
I can't guarantee that I will encounter a Barault guitar (they're pretty rare because of the high price) but if I do I will rate it for sure!
I actually bought a new one of his in 2017, and encountered an infamous selmer problem with it. jean is a good guy
@@councilofwolfgang9821 what did you encounter???
Where in ireland?.......
Ramelton during a festival called "Django Sur Lennon"
I don't jam with Selmac players any more. Hopefully one day someone will sell them artificial ears instead of super loud guitars.
If you jam with me you'll see that I will adapt my volume to your lead volume (as do many other good rhythm players btw)
