Hey guys, some tips about running downhill and not overheating the brakes: leave the vehicle in gear unless you're shifting, choose 2e (or 3e )gear and run a high RPM to use the engine as a brake as much as possible. And most importantly: don't leave your foot on the brakes. Braking softly is actually a lot worse for overheating than using them more roughly because by using them softly there is no period during which the brakes can cool down. So basically it could be like this: you put it in second gear, and just let it roll. If the rpm gets to high, you brake decently (not like in idiot but not soft either) untill you reach an acceptable RPM. Then release the brake completely. Repeat ;-). This gives the brakes a chance to cool down in between applications. Have fun on your trip :-)
In addition to using the lower gears to slow down you should look into an exhaust brake since you have a diesel. I used my exhaust brake on my GMC 3500 Dully Duramax all the time pulling my 35 foot travel trailer in the Colorado mountains it worked great.
Just a little tip. When you try and get dust out of the air filter next time, try blowing it from the inside out, that way you have less risk of pushing the dust into the filter and potentially into the engine later on. Trudy looking nice and clean again though, good job!

I live in the mountains in CO. Pike's Peak is very close. At about the halfway point they stop every car and check the temperature of the tires/brakes.

OMG having lost the use of breaks twice in my life once in an old mini, instead of stopping at a junction ended up sliding across a main road. The second instance was driving a horse lorry down a steep hill. I had my heart in my mouth when you continued your journey down the hill. So glad you got down safely.
Marianne totally agree about getting a foreign vehicle mended abroad. The catch on the side door of our Burstner (Fiat Ducato base) broke inn Morocco so it wouldn’t close. Two enterprising chaps fashioned a new spring from the wire in a bicycle tyre, worked so well there was no need to replace it. Cost a few pounds and a pair of socks.
Nice ending advice on real engineering. We lost part of our exhaust in the Namib desert in a Datsun. We managed to get it to a German farming community in Marienthal where the local garage created the exhaust section using old shock absorbers and it worked fine!
Oh I could really feel your anxiety when your brakes were overheating! I had the exact same experience along that stretch of road with my van while driving back from Hyder Alaska to Vancouver. Scary!

It becomes scary while you're going downhill. I have driven such an incline once and while it started snowing and ground was icy and it was midnight...NEVER AGAIN😥😥😥 I am glad to see that you guys are going back to TURKIYE in March. When you are in Istanbul you should also check out the Chora Church aka the Kariye Museum which is out near the old city walls. In between the tour bus groups you may be the only ones there. It was quite a walk out there for me and not easy to find in the middle of a residential neighborhood but totally worth it. Some of the mosaics are incredible and because they were covered are well preserved and were made by people who were masters of the craft and may even have been brought in from somewhere else or another country specifically for that purpose.

Glad you got back to Vancouver Island safely despite losing your brakes on that hot mountain. I have just been watching some Canadian youtubers (Epic Family Road Trip) do the same journey up the Dempster Highway to Tuktiaktuk only their vehicle is a 4x4 and they took their dog with them. The scenery looked totally different due to the Autumn leaf change and there were no mosquitoes.
I was wondering if you would be running into local Vanlifers. Vancity Vanlife and Cat Lady Van are out east this summer, but Foresty Forest is somewhere up there, probably on a mountaintop. I’ve learned from these channels that there’s likely more Vanlifers around you than you think.
You guys should change trudy into a 1999 smiley Ford Transit, indestructible campervans just like the one in when in Rome Travels, and the Expawers, they are a really reliable van. Anyhow a Great video

I'm curious why you are going to Australia before South or Central America. Wouldn't that be closer and then you could ship again to Australia from South America? It seems like it would be more expensive to ship the van across the ocean twice than it would be to ship from Panama to Colombia or a similar short distance and then ship further away. It's expensive either way, I'm sure, but every little bit helps.
Great question !! We are not able to drive our RHD vehicle through 3 of the countries in Central America and we have always dreamt of driving around the world (circumference!) So we will have to see where the wind takes us and which borders / land crossings we can take - if not we ship where we can 🚐💕🙌👍

I'm trying to build out a van as well, but she is much older than Trudy. I haven't decided how adventurous I want to be with her quite yet, but it's likely less adventurous than originally planned. That is super unfortunate for you, though. I've been looking forward to your eventual South American adventures, but hopefully you can after Australia (which will also be amazing, I'm sure).
Hi - it is because Trudy is Right Hand drive I think there are about 5 - 7 countries that it is illegal / banned - as some countries give special permission and others don't .... But to be honest as we are doing this lifestyle / adventure until we can no longer do it - we have time (hopefully) to do many more drives ... and South / Central America is deffo on the list !! 🌺

The cat is a Turkish Van from the lake Van area in Turksy. I had one in the UK 25 years ago and she was lovely!

Yes that's exactly what we did - we moved as soon as our brakes cooled down and worked again

It seems like it would be more expensive to ship the van across the ocean twice than it would be to ship from Panama to Colombia or a similar short distance and then ship further away. It's expensive either way, I'm sure, but every little bit helps.
Great question !! We are not able to drive our RHD vehicle through 3 of the countries in Central America and we have always dreamt of driving around the world (circumference!) So we will have to see where the wind takes us and which borders / land crossings we can take - if not we ship where we can 🚐💕🙌👍
@@TREADtheglobe That's interesting. Is it Trudy's make, model, year, type of engine, or something else that stops her from being able to drive into some of these countries? I'm trying to build out a van as well, but she is much older than Trudy. I haven't decided how adventurous I want to be with her quite yet, but it's likely less adventurous than originally planned. That is super unfortunate for you, though. I've been looking forward to your eventual South American adventures, but hopefully you can after Australia (which will also be amazing, I'm sure).
Hi - it is because Trudy is Right Hand drive I think there are about 5 - 7 countries that it is illegal / banned - as some countries give special permission and others don't .... But to be honest as we are doing this lifestyle / adventure until we can no longer do it - we have time (hopefully) to do many more drives ... and South / Central America is deffo on the list !! 🌺

I figured it was on the list in general since I don't know how you tread the globe without going there. :) I was just curious of the reasons behind the current timeline. Looking forward to all of the new adventures!
Thanks - our plans are always so fluid and we just try and work it out as we go - always checking routes, permissions, visas, weather windows etc ... but we will share it as soon as Chris can edit it 💕🙌🚐

I remember brakes heating somewhere in Türkiye too. Can't you get an upgrade our something? Is it unnecessary because it is rate? It would be a peace of mind though. :)
