Years ago I had a vacation in the Canadian Rockies, next province over, similar gorgeous landscape. We saw lots of moose and elk near sunset but no bears. Lots of stops for roadwork (can't do it in the winter). But interesting trivia, the women holding the stop signs are often married to a road worker. They sign up as couples because they're gone all summer.
The unidentified Bear is Eric from Dawley, he does Kiddies Birthday Parties, we wondered where he had disappeared to - last seen leaving Telford Bus Station on a Don Everall coach to Blackpool. If you'd offered him a Firkins Steak & Kidney Pie, he would no doubt have identified himself. 😉 Sorry about the Van, Adapt and Overcome.
It sure is stunning - every bit of the way! I love the towns you have gone through too. It is incredible to methat there are really a few towns along the way!!!
I wish you guys came to my shop for a check up when we met on Vancouver island! (White truck you gave me a card) Check the Transmission fluid. These two are unreal and most can only dream of being that cool. You will win thanks again for a lovely chat! Cheers
Hey Matt - was lovely to catch up with you - thanks for stopping and saying hi - what's the name of your shop or send us an email on chris@treadtheglobe.com 🙏👍
Brown/Grizzly Bears usually have a slightly humped back with some having a pronounced hump, while the Black Bears (can be brown or blonde in addition to black) do not. Big swaths of dead trees, especially in wet areas, are in newer swamps and that extra water kills the roots of the trees. There also are of course areas that have been hit by fires years ago but usually you can tell that from blackened areas. I hope you get Trudy's trouble worked out quickly and inexpensively.
Power steering fluid would be my first place to look. Second would be gearbox fluid. Oil and water looked fine from your video. Worth checking brake and clutch fluid, but with that amount leaking, you would have had issues by now with either. Good luck
the dead tree area you saw, drove past was probably from an old forest fire. the ground vegetation makes me think probably 5 years ago. i think you probably have a loose radiator hose or small hole in it. or maybe a weld or fin on the radiator it self. wont be your steering cause you would know by how your steering been affected or making noise. very off chance your axal boot cover. after you get it checked and repaired ask the service tec to show you how to check all your fluids, and what fluids to have to top up. pre trip daily and check tires and presure too
Oh no! Don’t leave us hanging about the state of Trudy. I’m saying prayers for you now and asking that Trudy be fixed easily and within a day or so. Safe travels.
I have so many good memories of Alaska. The wildlife, the wonderful hardy people, the gigantic veggies in Matanuska valley. The eagles, the PUFFINS, the unparalleled beauty of nature. My first drive across a frozen lake, and an Iditarod musher exercising her team gave me a ride, I was just doing a bit of outback Nordic skiing. The wolf breeders, every day was just magic. I went in January for the birth of my first grandchild. I loved how nobody knew what a water bill was. And how the meat freezer was a dugout or basement dug in the tundra.
I am in awesome awe of Mariaane. She single-handedly drove around the world, I mean actually touch the steering wheel. Not forgetting whats-his-name, who is a first-class navigator. How can she sit on the right side of the van and drive on the right side of the road? 😁😁😁
The bear was brown colored but was actually a Black Bear. Black Bears come in several color variations, and the brown ones are also called Cinnamin Bears.
Not sure if anyone told you what all the dead trees were about, but that is the result of a major forest fire. The trees had been burnt in the fire. All the smaller trees are new growth. Glad you’re enjoying your adventure.
The adventure continues. You caught the vibe of a long drive, scenery, bugs, laughter and even a couple of bears. Leaks, oh my. Be well and travel safely.
We were almost done with the video when we suddenly had TV technical issues. Finally fixed and continued on with your video. Needless to say we were disappointed when we saw the issue with trudi. Hope everything will come out okay. I imagine something may have shook loose from driving the gravel road. Good thoughts going your way.
That park where you stayed is so peaceful and tranquil. My ideal camping site. Just me and the birds. You are really having a wonderful time over there, I am full of pure envy. Onwards and upwards. Pwar, that cyclist is one tough man or woman with so many mozzies out there.
Where are you Trudy? Really miss you. Hope you are able to get Trudy fixed soon. Bad place to be with this problem. Hope there are lots of people helping. Just worry about availability of parts for a foreign vehicle. Pray for God’s blessing be upon you guys!🙏🙏🙏
Brilliant Video as usual. So love the Beautiful Mountains truly Wonderful and the Bears so pleased you have seen them. Hope Trudy will be ok.Take Care both xxx
Your videos just get more impressive, Its so great that your sharing it with us , trudy may be an old girl but she very rarely has problems, you guys are great ,stay safe much love guys ❤
Ok, the bug-splat closeups did nothing for my lunch - lol - really enjoying your trip - always wanted to go, never did. - so living vicariously through you two. Thank you! Once lived in Peace River, Alberta [also beautiful country] - had people over for dinner at Christmas and suddenly the floor moved, pictures went askew, the tree tinkled and rattled. It was a cheaply built house so we thought the house was falling apart from all of our weight combined.....but NO, it was an earthquake happening in Alaska. Has not happened in years since and not likely to again. Have a wonderful rest of your journey and thanks again for sharing your adventures with us.
Hi Chris and Marianne, another super vlog. The scenery is magnificent. I hope you get Trudy’s leak sorted😔. Had to look it up about the dead spruce, apparently it is due to an infestation of spruce beetle. Can’t wait for your next vlog, safe travels x👍👍
The bears are there, people often miss them because they aren't looking in the right places. I've had tourists tell me they are disappointed not to have seen any - and then pointed out half a dozen to them from that spot. Early spring when the thaw starts, they'll come down into the valley, as that clears first around the rivers - they especially like swampy areas where things like skunk cabbage grow. Then they'll spend time grazing on the hillsides - where there are grasses and the odd marmot and things. The grasses will usually be in avalanche sites where there aren't trees, so to see bears you just have to look up on the mountainsides. Late in the season, the berries and fish will bring the bears back down to the valley bottoms, as they fatten up for winter
Get your power steering pump checked over ASAP. As it's clean oil it could well be coming from there especially as you've driven a few rough(ish) roads. Some years ago I had similar problem with my camper van in Lithuania driving extremely bad roads due to resurfacing. I knew there was something wrong but determined to make it to Poland where I was more familiar with garages and mechanics. Turned out the bolt holding the pump on had sheared and the pump was almost falling off! The mechanic made a new bolt from scratch and had me sorted in an hour! I expect you'll find a garage not so far from where you are now and probably already got the problem sorted.
Beautiful British Columbia my home Province -There is a reason we are Hollywood North as we can be used as a natural set for just about any place in the world , If only you got a chance to see the coast as you only got to see little bits of it on the Island . Haida Gwaii is another magical place .
Just found your channel and love your video style! Such a cute otter spotting and beautiful scenery there. Hope you get your van issue sorted - poor Trudy!
Marrianne it wasn't a bear that was kneeling and praying that's for sure! Ahh the bear horn to serenade them as they naw through ya leg! Maybe the bear takes requests and can play a bit of Glen Miller first like In The Mood........ Id ask the bear do you take requests...."Can you play Far Away!! Wishing you both the best!
All are affected by an outbreak of spruce bark beetle. Spruce bark beetles have killed spruce trees in vast areas of forest on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, Copper River Basin and Anchorage Hillside. During the 1990s, almost three million acres of white and Lutz spruce forests were impacted by the beetle.
I'm curious on how many miles the van has done and if you have a maintenance budget to fall back on, these are considerations we are debating whilst we plan our trip next year. Do we buy a new van, second hand and how much will it cost to be on the road for a year, fuel, paid camp sites and repairs etc.
Hi Mark - yes these are all considerations ... We have friends with new vans which have broken down and had their fridges / toilets etc break ... so It is a tricky decision !! We bought Trudy as my dad had the same model and she went like a dream (like Trudy) Fuel - that depends on which country you are in and how many miles you plan to do ... likewise the campsite thing depends on how many days you plan / prep or want to live off grid ... and repairs .... we have savings and use the income from our work to build savings to spend on Trudy / adventures and filming gear / insurance for Trudy and us / shipping / visas etc ... all good things to consider. I hope this helps you with your list of things to help you chose what works for you. Marianne xx
I just cringe seeing all those mosquitoes flying around you two. I got 2 stings from Yellow Jackets on Monday and OMG can those things inflict pain. I had never been stung by one before. So glad that you have been able to see bears, we hardly saw any while we were there, but, we did have a moose step out in front of us on the road, he was massive. I see Overlanding Sophia has made it over.....I see a reunion coming soon. It must be so fun meeting all the people you do as you travel the world. Take care now
Oh Adele !! A moose in front of your van !! That would be terrifying !! and yellow jackets ... I have not heard of those - I will look them up !! Yep we hope to meet / cross paths with @Overlanding Sophia !! That would be fabulous xx 💜🙌
Hi fantastic footage always enjoy your videos. Please check Trudy's power steering fluid if that's ok you've probably got a gearbox leak, driveshaft oil seal?
Interesting you commented on different types of vehicles including a cyclist using the road, just wondered how he gets through the bears, as they could see him as the original meals on wheels!! Great videos.
The most amazing scenery what an adventure. If it was coolant a low level light would come on if sensor working correctly. Power steering fluid possibly didn’t check that on vlog hope nothing major.. want to see more great vids.
Fantastic scenery and bonus seeing the bears. I watch a TH-cam channel called Itchy Boots..a Dutch girl who is motorcycling up to Alaska from South America. Take care Chris and Marrianne.

that s probably a coolant leak since you previously had some radiator work done in turkey ,only clean fluid in diesel vehicles would be coolant and brake fluid , i can not recall if they did replace the radiator or rebuilt it in turkey but you definitely have some issues with coolant leak. Of course that s my humble opinion.
There is a reason for pre pay gas in BC - A young man was working as a gas attendant & some people tried to pull a gas and go the kid tried to stop them but they ran him over & dragged him under the car & he died . So the Gov brought in pre pay to prevent that from happening again .
It was a black bear, or what they call "cinnamon black." Black bears come in black, brown, and sometimes white in color. Brown bears have a large hump in between their shoulders. That's the telltale sign.
You have the colors of ‘ black bears” right, but they DON’T have a hump between their shoulder blades !! ONLY GRIZZLY BEARS have HUMPS. BLACK bears are docile compared to Grizzlies. Give them a very wide berth!
Chris and marianne merhaba sizi özledik we 've missed you
Thank you we will be back one day !

Oh how nice is that !
When there are pebbles on the road, keep your hand pressed on the windshield. It will help prevent the windshield from breaking.
The unidentified Bear is Eric from Dawley, he does Kiddies Birthday Parties, we wondered where he had disappeared to - last seen leaving Telford Bus Station on a Don Everall coach to Blackpool. You are a real hero Trudy. 🧿🇹🇷❤️🇬🇧
Thank you my friend ... she really is !
The bugs will plug up your radiator, put a screen in front.
Over time they will also eat up your radiator from decomposition.
Safe travels

With the oil spotting covering a wide area, it does point to power steering being the likely culprit.

absolutely amazing .hope that its not a major problem with the loss of vechile fluid and the bears look huge

Magnificent video- and seeing the bear is a bonus. Hope Trudy gets better xxx

Good to see Chris behind the wheel! What’s it like for mosquitos and bugs up there? You haven’t mentioned anything… 😆
LOL !! There are a few mosquitoes .... and all of their friends !!
This is the first time I've seen Chris at the wheel in the US / CA. I wondered why he wasn't driving?

more likely and old burn, e.g. wildfire

Great vlog guys, and yay Inverness got a mention. I live in Inverness 🙂. Hope you get your power steering fluid leek fixed 👍
Woo Hoo !!
Thank you for such fantastic videos. Another couple Chirpy Travellers is in your area and they are complaining about the mosquitos also
It is probably hydraulic oil from your steering rack & pinion or power steering pump.
One of your best videos ever. Thanks. Was it power steering fluid?
Get your power steering pump checked over ASAP. As it's clean oil it could well be coming from there especially as you've driven a few rough(ish) roads. Hey guys we love you
There is a problem with Spruce Bug Worm out west. I can't say for certain but that may be the dead trees you saw.
Oh no poor Trudy! Hope everything is ok?
Hope you are okay? Best whishes 🍀
Great video guys like national geographic, maybe a bug zapper from walmart might help with the mosquitoes got one for our camper great fun
The one thing about Alaska is that you should be able to find mechanics who can work on Diesel engines because most commercial boats are diesel
It's funny cause it only gets better as you get inland a bit more and near the coast. 😁🥰 lots of bears out. 🐻 road side bear berry's lol.

Those dead trees look like an old forest fire, all the regrowth looked the same hight
You need a bug cover for Trudy. Here in Texas going into fall we have firefly crazness. Stay safe.
So beautiful landscape ❤️take of your Trudy! You should give Trudy real shampoo wash after mosquito 🦟 season ☺️
That's the plan 🌺
Awesome video guys I do hope you get them fixed and it’s nothing major
Epic vlog. Cross my fingers and hope there is no serious oil leak. Gearbox? Drive safe 🚐💨👍
Interesting you commented on different types of vehicles including a cyclist using the road, just wondered how he gets through the bears, as they could see him as the original meals on wheels!! Great videos.
Good question!
From talks with visitors most bears don't want anything to do with you. Exception is your food, and injuries bears, or ones you have surprised.
On the other hand with you guys doing the videos, I don't have to!!😁😁
👋👍we waiting you allways my Sister and bruder
Gearbox/transmission oil?
Is it red? Power steering fluid.
I wonder if the oil under the car could be from the road works.
I think u need to run yoir engine to look for leaks
