Can I afford to play this game? No Is there anywhere local I can even play if I could? No Do I watch every episode from Play on Tabletop anyway? Absolutely!
Well if you really want there is a way to play in table top simulator on a PC it's a non expensive way of trying out the game before selling your soul for the minies xD
Can we just get an extra round of applause for the editing? The explanations are of course excellent but the editing really takes it over the top in terms of making everything more understandable.
The editing is excellent, the players engaging and entertaining, the explanations informative. However, the editing does it a bit of disservice. It condenses a 3-hour long slog-fest of dice rolling down to a ~40 minute video, giving the false impression the game is much more dynamic than it really is. For those who enjoy it, knock yourself out! Not looking to take anything away from your chosen form of recreation. But for anyone new to the game looking to get a feel for it, this is not an accurate representation of the _actual_ amount of time and repetitiveness involved.
Oh my goodness yes! The coverage is excellent, the aesthetics are stunning, split screen models vs shots are class even labelling the die each time with fails/successes etc SOOOO much effort went into this and I really appreciate it. Being a filmmaker I can see how much you guys went above and beyond to make it look great and be so clear to understand. Well frickin done. 👏👏 The pace is also fast enough to not make it dull and the guys just knew their stuff so it flows really well. When we used to play (RT era) it took hours coz we had to keep looking up everything. And we had cheat sheets! There's still so much to learn after watching this 9th Ed being played but I think it's maybe coz it's so bloated with modifiers to remember. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually.
as someone who has picked warhammer up as a spectator through context clues i appreciate that you broke this down barney style this has contextualized a lot of the rules, cheers!
Yes, it was SO helpful to see the rules contextualized and explained WHY it happens not just “because.” Even the beginner battle reports often just throw out numbers and rules like the audience is expected to know what they are. The side graphics and animations are also really well done and helpful!
I love how you guys progressively go from slowly and methodically explaining every element of the game to simply playing the game, still clearly describing every move, but quite obviously just having a damn good time. Much respect

I can imagine explaining basic principles to another veteran player on camera could be a bit awkward. But I can think of no better, more natural way of including the explanations in the video. And the two players bring such a nice, positive attitude to the table that this was a joy to watch. Not to mention the amazing editing.
My cousin and I just played our 1st game together (with great success and fun though we didn't use our units to their fullest it seems) and I wanted to thank everybody involved with this channel for helping us grasp the rules in the weeks leading up to the game. I look forward to many many maaaaaaaaaaany years of play with my friends as they're going to start building their own armies as well. Much love to all of you.
**CORRECTION to CORRECTION: We have removed reference to the Heroically intervening not being able to be the target of an attack due to this being an older edition rule. We apologize for the confusion. It does create a bit of a strange cut in the video but this is better than leaving it in. *Correction: at 27:07 we mention that the lord is not a valid target for combat because it Heroically intervened, this is not true in 9th and it is a valid target.

I'm just starting to get in to warhammer 40k after I got a starter set for Christmas. Your video is great and both of you are fun to watch. Thank you for making it.
Guys, one of the best "beginners" vids. Not only content wise, but also "technically". Sound, speach, visibility, table, minis, video and photo-editing and the way most important points are repeated by bulletpoints makes up a great presentation. Not only for beginners, but also for grizzled 40k silver-backs like me , stepping back into 40k with a new edition. You got my thumbs up andf a sub. Keep on the great work. No pity, no remorse, no fear !
So it's been about 4 years since I've played 40k and I was recently gifted an entire, unbuilt, Ynnari army (like $900 worth of stuff!!!) and while searching for videos on how to get back into the game with 9th edition I stumbled upon your channel and have been binging as much as I can while I sit and build Eldar like a fiend! All I can say is that you all have reinstated my passion for this hobby! Thank you! I'm back, baby! From one TH-cam creator to another, Play On!

There are so many beginners guides for complicated tabletop, card, video games that overwhelm potential new players. Despite the good intentions, these subpar guides only impede the growth of games. This guide is does not fall into that category. This video is highly organized with clear visuals and methodical demonstration of the many mechanics of warhammer. The crown jewel of this video is its transition from a slow turn progression to a faster paced mock of what a battle would look like after a player gains a understanding. This gives a new player a benchmark to attain and encouragement to physically attempt playing. I’m sold not only to the game but your channel as well. Keep it up 👍
I took the plunge and started the hobby today by buying an Indomitus box from my local store, largely based on this video and the recommendation of the local store employee who (though Im sure it was part of a pitch) kindly showed me what all the models would cost to buy separately. Seems like a stellar deal and even though this video is almost a year old, I wanted yall to know it was still helping folks get into the hobby!
As a video that needs to be relevant for some time we put in a lot of effort into the graphics and "charts". We can't do this all the time (the edit was massive) but when we can, we will.
@@PlayOnTabletop i can imagine. One thing I find that really takes away from the action in most battle report videos is the top down camera that never really shows off the models up close to add atmosphere and context. You guys didn't just add that, you also included all kinds of crazy effects. Hats off gentlemen! This is a new gold standard.
As someone getting into 40k after seeing it a lot at game stores and who mainly just started buying as assembling models, this was a very clear and easy to watch explanation on the mechanics of the game and the effort that went into it really shows!
As an employee of a local game shop that knows nothing about 40k but wanted to get into it for the sake of my customers, I can’t thank you guys enough for this video. It’s incredibly well made, paced, and completing geared to someone unfamiliar with the game. It’s helped me tremendously so thanks a million!
Recently started an AdMech army after getting back into 40k after 16 years - really appreciate how clearly and succinctly you guys explain and lay everything out. The different angles and overlay effects really cement *how* the rules function. Cheers from New Zealand!
Ad Mech are a lot of fun. Did you watch the Ad mech battle report we made recently? They are a complex army compared to some others but I love the aesthetic.
I just bought my 1st starter kit a few days ago (9th Command set) and have been watching you guys religiously while building my armies and painting them. Thank you guys for the great vids. Keep it up!
Absolutely brilliant effort guys, you broke everything down fantastically, you didn't go too heavy in the rules and you had fun, and were polite, you explained every.single.step! 10/10 this is the best tutorial I've seen yet. Thank you and well done.
This video is great. I've seen others that try to help, but everyone is just so quickly spouting off numbers it's hard to follow what is actually happening. Thank you so much for taking the few extra seconds each turn to clarify what was actually happening, what you were rolling for, and what the results mean. I hope that you guys are still doing videos and might doing a similar video whenever 10th edt comes out.
One of the best explanations tuts... Like it, how everything important is graphically build into the screen design. For me as newbie to the hobby and educated graphic designer, watching this video was both entertaining and educating ! Thanks! Sry 4 bad English
Just wanted to say, I had a small collection as a kid, but never learned how to play. After getting a small set recently as a gift, it’s made me regret selling my childhood army and though I want to give it another go, and that there must be a TH-cam channel now where I can learn how to play. SO HAPPY I found you guys, your videos are very well put together very well edited, the quality of how you present the information on screen is 10/10. Along with you and your team (in other videos) all seem great on camera. Safe to say I’ve found my channel, won’t be needed to go elsewhere! Also the box set in this video will be arriving soon, can’t wait ☺️
I'm a newbie by about 5 weeks and learning the basic rules. Lads I have to say this is an absolutely fantastic help and I'm serious. I'm now going to watch this again because i'm so impressed. I've subscribed, liked and hit the bell, many thanks for a brilliant tutorial, much appreciated.
This was great. really hope u guys do a version of this later for other armies. really helps show how the army works as well as tips of moves to avoid. Too many videos to do every army against each other, but this gave me a better understanding of Necrons.
We have an aim to do more specific "How to" videos. We thought to keep these to phases and rules but the idea of doing armies is very interesting as well. Thank you for the suggestion!
Thanks guys! I am a (fairly recent) AoS player and fell in love with the game, which of course made me curious about 40k. This video was very well done and very entertaining...unfortunately now I KNOW I want to take the plunge into the 41st millennium. Great job, new subscriber and fan here.
You guys are the best Warhammer playing channel I watch it's really easy to digest your content and it made it really easy to feel confident in rules I wasn't sure on and didn't understand, so thanks, will be recommending this video and your Chanel to others
It looks like we missed this! We will have to re-read that rule. Admittedly tough to go over all the rules in a weekend but we should still be accurate with these kind of videos. Sorry.
FINALLY. A video in a format that makes sense to my brain. A new player here and I've only gotten to painting some of my minis. I was afraid I wasn't ever going to find a video that clearly defined some of the things that left me confused in the books. Cheers guys! Great vid.
That explanation you guys put for how wound rolls worked really helped put into context for me. I struggled hard with understanding the math of it but explaining it the way you did really made it make sense.
Definitely gonna put this on for the wife to watch now, as I'm trying to get my wife into it. Love watching the 40k in 40 mins. Now watched this hopefully be able to start having proper games with the wife and kids.
Nice pretty new to the hobby going to play my first real game only done the learning missions in the command module and got recommended to watch this and got so happy to see my 2 favourites on the channel teaching me how to play. Thanks guys this helps loads
Yes, we got this as an 8th rule. We are editing the video quickly to remove this to avoid confusion with new players. It was daunting to get through all the rules in this short period of time but still, we hold ourselves to a high standard and try to avoid mistakes like this. Thank you for catching it.
This is a good tutorial for not only playing 40k on the tabletop but also teaching what people are talking about when you are watching someone else play.
I've watched the entirety of the 40K in 40m without looking up the rules because it was quite entertaining and managed to grasp some of the concepts. Now that I'm watching this (beautifully crafted) tutorial, I'm enjoying the game a lot more! Thanks!
Thanks for watching our shows! We have a new 9th Edition Battle coming out soon and hopefully with your new understanding you will have a great time watching that one.
Awesome tutorial! I've been on the fence for quite a while due to being so overwhelmed but after having watched this I'm fairly certain you've got a new Tau player on your hands!
@@PlayOnTabletop Yes I've seen and enjoyed his games, like I have all your posted videos, they're so good and easy to get into! Credit where it's due! However, his lack of Broadside suits turns the Greater Good into the Very Sad. However, something that I think would be a big but easy improvement would be the addition of time stamps in your videos.
Man I was debating on getting into this game but I am extremely overwhelmed after watching this. Less confused. Awesome job at explaining how things work. It just seems EXTREMELY time consuming.
Really love the way you presented it. Writing out the stats helps memorizing and learning it a lot. And it felt more like a game with good explanation than a (boring)Tutorial, putting the fun in the forfront. ps: Really think Eradicators are way overpowered as predicted.
Game: "Okay, so you need to roll a 4+ on a dice if you want to hit." Me: "Okay... Simple enough." Game: "But you also need to roll at least two more dices if you want them to hit." Me: *_"B R U H ._* What is this fuckery?"
@dembro when attacking a target there are only two questions: Did I hit my target; and did my hit have any effect. Any amount of rolls over two to answer is an overcomplication no matter what butthurt fanboy rationalization you use to try to justify it.
Step 1 - Roll Accuracy - Did it Hit? Step 2 - Roll Wounds - Would it Hurt? Step 3 - Roll Armor Saves - Does the Armor protect them (or cover........ or GOD!) Step 4 - Roll Ignore Wounds - Now that you've proven that not even GOD will protect them, do they have some extra bullshit that negates it... 50% Chance to Hit... 50% Chance to Wound ... 25% 50% Chance to Save ... 12.5% 50% Chance to Ignore ... 6.25%
Thank you so much for posting this! I've never played before but just picked up the Indomitus boxed set so that I can play with my kids. Really appreciate the time you guys take to teach with your videos.
That is fantastic! For most of us are kids are too young still but Tak is playing with his nephew and having a great time building, painting, and not gaming in front of a screen.
I've watched a lot of tutorials and even 2 years in i still like to watch them so I can better teach friends. To be honest this is the best I've watched plus the beautiful models and environment make watching the table even more exciting
All imperium seems to strong in points costs in 9th and all xenos seem weak. I'll only be playing my nids vs other xenos and I expect I'll get sick of winning with my B.A. quickly. Going 1st is too strong with not knowing for deploying. The community should rebalance points ourselves because GW does not want the game balanced they want people chasing meta buying more models everytime GW "rebalances" a new force to be op
@@LapahnYT yeah just dicking around with 9th with the box units and it's super hard to take down the Marines - Chaplain, Captain, Juciciar, Ancient - with all those damn Auras makes playing them really easy vs the crons in the box - bubble up and get a f pile of re rolls / +1s to hit, and those eradicators can just sit back and melt
As a brand new player to 40k this did give at least a good framework to how the game works vs other games (I play Star Wars Legion). The production quality is great and so are the players. You have my sub!!

Absolutely love this! We have a ton of fun with this game so supporting someone who can support others also have fun is incredibly rewarding.
Re-watched thus for the funsies and didn't skip the credits. Thus was painted in under a week by Tak? That man's a machine, dude!
Fueled by coffee and powered by music. It was really a team effort as Tycho and JT did all the assembly.
@@PlayOnTabletop not yet! Wanted to check this out first, but that video is next up 😎
Been away fro like 20 years , this is the best explenation i seen. Thank you guys ,my box is in the mail hopefully in weeks i can play with it :P
Welcome back!
I just bought my 1st starter kit a few days ago (9th Command set) and have been watching you guys religiously while building my armies and painting them. Thank you guys for the great vids. Keep it up!
That is awesome!
I’m returning to 40K after just over ten years. This is a perfect re-introduction!
Love this, do a Crusade how to play, the rules are so confusing on this but it looks like so much fun!!!
We are definitely going to get into Crusade in the very near future!
Absolutely brilliant effort guys, you broke everything down fantastically, you didn't go too heavy in the rules and you had fun, and were polite, you explained every.single.step! 10/10 this is the best tutorial I've seen yet. Thank you and well done.
Please, make a tutorial on how to paint Space Marines and Necrons from the Indomitus box set. They look awesome!
My first tutorial for Warhammer and I'm still a little lost on the bonuses, but I would be completely hopeless without this video.
I'm very new to 40k, have tried watching many tutorial videos and they all confused the hell out of me except for this one. Good job fellas.
Thanks!
One of the best explanations tuts... Like it, how everything important is graphically build into the screen design. For me as newbie to the hobby and educated graphic designer, watching this video was both entertaining and educating ! Thanks! Sry 4 bad English
From one graphic designer to another - glad you enjoyed it!
I know this vid is now 2 years old, but you guys are freakin awesome, best tabletop gaming channel on TH-cam
Could use a table of contents, listing each section for ready reference/just being able to get to the part that you're confused about.
That is a good suggestion. We are hoping that we will be putting out more videos in the future so will take this into account.
@@PlayOnTabletop Honestly, it's more nitpicking.
Y'all are still the most approachable 40k channel on the Tube.
Why in the Emperors name you guys don't have more subs is beyond me. Thank you so much for this video from a long time hobby watcher, to now player.
We are just super happy this helped. Welcome to the hobby!
Great job, new subscriber and fan here.
god damn Tycho's beard has just evolved.
There is growing concern among the group that the beard might ally with the moustache and overtake us all
@@PlayOnTabletop *INTERESTED NECRON NOISES*
@@PlayOnTabletop INTRIGUED PLAGUE MARINE NOISES
I haven't played in 20+ years and my kids recently got interested. This helped us get the basics down. Thank you!
As someone who hasn't played since maybe 6th edition, this is a welcome release for me.
You guys are the best Warhammer playing channel I watch it's really easy to digest your content and it made it really easy to feel confident in rules I wasn't sure on and didn't understand, so thanks, will be recommending this video and your Chanel to others
27:07 I belive that in 9th you can target units that performed Heroic Intervention, even if you didn't declared charge against it.
Came here to post this as well..
Same, glad someone got to it before I did!
Glad it landed with you! It's a concept we know a lot of people have had troubles with
Do I need a beard to play?
Yes but by know you should have grown one
Absolutely 😎
It automatically grows depending on the size of your mini collection
@@mrcopycat2355 this is absolutely true, my beard has never been more luscious...
@@mrcopycat2355 this rule also applies to females
the UI on this video is done very well for a beginner to see whats going on, instead of cutting back and forth to datasheets. Well done
Just ordered around 1000 points worth of Custodes, can't wait to play!
I absolutely love how you guys go about explaining 9th. My wife picked it up, having never played a wargame before, immediately after watching this
Your wife picked up 40k? Renew your marriage vows
Definitely gonna put this on for the wife to watch now, as I'm trying to get my wife into it. Love watching the 40k in 40 mins. Now watched this hopefully be able to start having proper games with the wife and kids.
super well done, thank you! Look at starting my journey into the game.
Then it's mission accomplished. All the best with the journey!
Nice pretty new to the hobby going to play my first real game only done the learning missions in the command module and got recommended to watch this and got so happy to see my 2 favourites on the channel teaching me how to play. Thanks guys this helps loads
I believe that if a character does a Heroic Intervention, they become a legal target for attacks now.
Thats what I thought
Yeah, he did the 8th edition rule by mistake.
Just ordered my first warhammer things being the kill team starter pack, this video made me even more excited for it to come!
Nice! Happy tabletop gaming!
This makes Nick very happy! He is our resident Tau player and has been on the channel a few times with them.
@@PlayOnTabletop Oh yes. That guy again.
Eradicators are indeed a very brutal unit especially with deployment tricks to ensure they get into range of their attacks.
I enjoy the way this video is edited and the labels that come upon screen. Clear and easy to understand. I am new to WH and this channel is great.
Welcome to Warhammer 40k!
Game: "Okay, so you need to roll a 4+ on a dice if you want to hit."
Me: "Okay... Simple enough."
Game: "But you also need to roll at least two more dices if you want them to hit."
Me: *_"B R U H ._* What is this fuckery?"
Think of it like this
Did i hit?
Y/N
Was it a Good hit? (Did it wound)
Y/N
Did the characters armor save them?
Y/N
I also had problems with this in the beginning
But after some time I really came to appriciate it
@dembro they could make this game more apealling by just combining the wound and armor save as they essentially mean the same thing.
Step 3 - Roll Armor Saves - Does the Armor protect them (or cover........ or GOD!)
Step 4 - Roll Ignore Wounds - Now that you've proven that not even GOD will protect them, do they have some extra bullshit that negates it...
50% Chance to Hit...
50% Chance to Wound ... 25%
50% Chance to Save ... 12.5%
50% Chance to Ignore ...
I found this channel after learning about the lore from Luetin09, good timing 👍nice job
If you haven't already, check out Bricky's videos on the lore as well!
I've watched a lot of tutorials and even 2 years in i still like to watch them so I can better teach friends. To be honest this is the best I've watched plus the beautiful models and environment make watching the table even more exciting
Thank you that is a big compliment!
back in my day when S was double T it was an instant kill and there was a whole chart of SvsT
This video taught me more about gameplay of 40k more than dozen of other tutorials combined! Thank you! Cant wait for my 1st set to finaly arrive!
Outstanding video quality as always!
We worked hard to bust this out in record time for us. The edit was massive.
I love how Play on Tabletop has better formatted and more entertaining how to play videos than WH+. Kudos to the POT team.
This was a REALLY good step by step guide! Best one I have seen.
This was one of the best, if not THE best rules explaining playthrough on utube. Good job!
So the Marines are OP per usual, what a shocker :D
The Necrons are OP too.
@@drebodollaz3504 Never saw Necrons win in 9th edition so far against Space Marines. Why are they OP?
Lapahn BS 3+ and AP -1 on basic troop units...
I got the Indomitus set today with a friend. We haven't touched Warhammer since 2nd edition. This vid is amazingly helpful!
I'm starting with this edition and this helps a ton! Subbed.
As a brand new player to 40k this did give at least a good framework to how the game works vs other games (I play Star Wars Legion). The production quality is great and so are the players. You have my sub!!
Awesome to hear. Legion is something we’d love to try getting into.
Ive just bought this for my son, cheers guys, perfect. Defo subscribed.
I know this is way late but this was super helpful. I have not played since 3rd edition, and am getting back into it, so getting a feel of how all the changes work was great. Thank you!
Ya know, I always pronounced it like "I'm Mega" in my head.
I love coming back and watching this as I'm almost a year into the hobby. Thank you so much for everything you guys do.
Your welcome! Thanks for supporting us!
