i think n55s post 2013 are reliable as long as the maintenance is kept in check , especially the Mperformance versions, a below average score should be done in comparison to other engines in its class... 300-365hp. BMW service intervals dont help either.

What causes me to feel a hard shift before coming to a stop in my bmw 435i it feels as if it's downshifting hard but it's felt in the back wheels could it be diff bushings or transmission problems? Please answer

R - Sounds like a transmission issue. Do you have any engine codes?

I have a 2007 X3 with ~ 172,800 miles, and have not really had engine problems yet. I picked it up with about 110,000 on it and in my 7th year with car. The engine has a very smooth power band and is a great engine. I may need to do something with VANOS solenoids as I experience a very slight flutter at acceleration after the car is fully warmed up and running, but very slight, although it isn't throwing any codes. So maybe the tranny? Not sure as the GM trans can be a little stupid in the lower gears after the Adaptations have been kicking in for some miles. Clearing them does help for a while. Overall a great all round daily driver that is amazing at doing a lot things well, including hauling things when you need it, decent gas mileage as it's fairly light and drives like a tight sports sedan. It's also as solid as a brick and has no rattles or squeaks whatsoever.
Things I have had to replace: expansion tank, 3 times! Just had it done again last week. Transfer case gears, twice. They are nylon and do wear out. Don't go to BMW, they will tell you to replace the transfer case, it's how they operate. Pocket pickers. I've had ABS Speed sensors replaced twice now, and things like ground straps and front engine mount bolts on the right side. Sounds like a lot, but after 7 years it's a bargain as we always buy our cars outright. Paid $11,150 delivered with tax, etc. So even with repairs it's cost effective and I own it!
I plan on getting a CarFax to see what work was done before I owned it as the starter and water pump have not been issues for me yet, nor have the seals for oil leaks.

Ken - No worries! Thanks for sharing valuable insight and first hand experience. Getting maintenance records would be great to assist in letting you know what has and hasn't been done. Keep us posted on this.

I LOVE MY N55. PEOPLE JIZZ OVER THE B58, BUT IT DOESNT SOUND AS GOOD AS THE N55 AND THE RELIABILITY IS ABOUT THE SAME.

Bryant - Love hearing this. What are you driving and how many miles do you got in it? Both engines are solid BMW staples!

@@8020Media I replied to this earlier. Not sure what happened. I'm driving a Melbourne Rot F30 with red interior and ZF8 trans. 110K I don't consider gasket leaks a major issue, all gaskets that are prone to leaking have been replaced before 80K

N55 has no forged parts like the N54.
