  • Adobe Fresco is officially here! It has been a long time coming, and now that it is here I am so excited to test it out and see how it stacks up to my favorite painting app, Procreate. Here are my first reactions to the new app. Enjoy!

    Great video! I keep swearing off and then going back and messing with Fresco because that stock sketching pencil in there is amazing and procreate has never implemented tilt very well imo. But man, that fresco pencil is fun to sketch with. Hopefully ABR brushes in Procreate 5 will help this. In general I agree the pressure differences between the two apps are annoying and I prefer the sensitivity of Procreate.
    One thing I brought over from Fresco to procreate that you mentioned: If you’re really loving the modifier button switch to your eraser you can make the little modifier button in Procreate do this. Yes, as you said you’ll still have to pick your eraser brush but that quick fire shortcut to erase with the same tip you’re drawing with is really nice. You also have to put your eye dropper shortcut somewhere else if that’s where you had it. I much prefer this way of summoning the eraser to double-tapping the Apple Pencil as I activate this accidentally all the time so I turned it off.

    I’ve only been playing with it for a few days. I like the watercolor brushes and I like that I can set it to dark mode. I keep trying to like Procreate but I’m medium about it. I work mostly in Ai. I did find a cool hidden feature in Fresco. In the settings there is something called Experimental. If you turn it on you can draw a line and hold and it will become straight, like in Procreate.

    The one thing that makes it not a Procreate rival, is the price. At 10 dollars a month, Adobe is clearly not trying to compete with apps that cost 10 dollars for a one time purchase. Fresco also doesn't have nearly as many features as Procreate, or other apps on iOS, so that's like half the features and infinitely more expensive. Fresco is available for people who already have CC so that's more money that Adobe is not chasing. CC subscribers get it as just another available app. As far as I can see, Adobe is just adding value to it's CC subscription. The 10 dollar a month is so expensive that it seems like they're trying to discourange non CC subscribers from getting it.
    Lastly, Fresco does have it's cool water color, oil paint, and vectors. Those 3 things do set it apart from Procreate and I guess most other mobile apps. It's not tracking like a competitor at all. Almost nobody is going to buy it for 10 dollars a month and we have to assume that Adobe knows that.

      Quite right!! I use Procreate all the time.
      BUT. . .This year our school district bought the Adobe Creative Cloud license. This allowed me to try FRESCO on the iPad Pro. The palette / brushes are limited, but enough to teach in the Art lab and Summer ART Camp.
      Otherwise I'd be spending hundreds of dollars a year for CC and the apps. Fresco isn't bad. I used Ai /Ps in art school.
      But if it weren't for the district, I'd stick with Procreate.
      👍⁉🤔

    One of the major deciding factors for me wanting to get the iPad Pro over other tablet options is just so I can pay for Procreate ONE time and not every freaking month and for multiple programs. Unfortunately even if this app turned out to be vastly better than Procreate, I honestly couldn’t afford it. Thankfully I can borrow Photoshop and InDesign from my work’s account 😅

    Tell me why I should invest my time in a product that could be dropped in a couple of years time? I feel invested in smaller companies because they seem to have the fight in them to roll out the updates, ever trying to keep on top. I’ve been feeling like a test subject recently with Adobe apps. I have now been using Photoshop professionally for 22yrs along with other Adobe staples - Illustrator / InDesign / Lightroom / Acrobat. At the end of the day it’s about one thing - getting the job done. I know with Adobe’s main product line they’re not going anywhere.

    I think you missed to underline that huge difference factor that Fresco has, which is you can combine live, vector and pixel brushes all in one document and transfer it to another adobe application like adobe illustrator and finalise your work there if you are a graphic designer or working in media industry. For me, this is a great future.

    • @max-olson
      @max-olson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Their target is customers who already have the full Adobe suite. Their competitor isn't really Procreate as they already have a stranglehold on the creative industry, they already have the customers they need. This just fits in with the Adobe workflow and an added incentive to those already in the Adobe ecosystem.

    • @KuttyJoe
      @KuttyJoe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually don't think Adobe will rush to get this app up to competitive speed. Look at Adobe's mobile efforts so far. This app looks just like those. Not competing on features and not competing on price and all of them tying back into a CC subscription to complete the picture. That must be Adobe's goal. To either keep subscribers, or to entice new subscribers. They know that very few people are going to pay 10 dollars a month for this single app with half the features of apps that only cost 5 or 10 dollars for a one time purchase.

    • @jekalambert9412
      @jekalambert9412 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KuttyJoe The $10 per month includes a CC subscription with small cloud storage, access to Photoshop, Illustrator and Spark as well as Fresco. It depends on how you intend to use the programs if the $10/month is worth it or not.

      @KuttyJoe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jekalambert9412 That makes sense. Its not a subscription to Fresco, its the regular Photoshop subscription which happens to include Fresco. Which is really what I was saying. Wow, what a great review.
    You're correct in saying photoshop users would have a leg up because I adapted to the photoshop parts well. My photoshop experience having been about ten years ago when I used to work in a photo studio and use Adobe apps all day, everyday. When I left that world, I resisted digital apps except the basic ones built into iOS, until a few months ag.
    Fresco was the app I decided to start with. All those photoshop repetitions from years ago kicked back into gear, although it was more like I was using photoshop than a separate drawing program.
    You pointed out some features I didn't know of, so that's cool. Other things I felt were slow or circuitou, you also pointed out, so it's not just me? I also get that the two second delay for lack of a shortcut is not a petty matter like I initially felt.
    So, not being a huge watercolor or oil paint fan, I'm convinced to use Procreate, as opposed to fiddling around with Fresco much longer. Thanks. And I will check out your skillshare classes!

    I like that I can own my purchase of procreate. With Fresco, you're renting the tool monthly via the Creative Cloud. Don't get me wrong, I do have CC because it's an industry standard, but the level of greed to make ownership of the software impossible is sort of off-putting. With that being said, Adobe puts the money to good use by constantly pushing the envelope on what is possible in design software. But still, the business model is extremely strange - only being able to rent the software that you use. During a financial slump, I found myself functioning as a designer and illustrator by purchasing Procreate, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher. I also had Inkscape available for the trace feature that is missing in Affinity Designer.

    Lots of comments about the $9.99/mo being expensive so I just wanted to add thoughts. For $9.99/mo you can get the photography plan that I have. That includes Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, Camera Raw, XD, Premiere Rush AND Fresco. Plus 20GB (this could be better) of cloud space which means you can easily gain access to your WiP Fresco documents in Photoshop etc without having to plug in your device or use other cloud services to access your images etc.
    Sadly I don't have a device that is supported by Fresco but since seeing this review and noticing I have access to it for no extra cost I am interested in getting a supported device. If Fresco has similar features to the free Adobe Sketch, Capture and Draw that work on my phone I will delighted, such as two 'clicks' to send an image straight to Photoshop without plugging in my phone/tablet. Presumably this is thanks to the Cloud storage subscription?
    If I am wrong about this then please someone stop me before I spend megabucks on a Surface or iPad...

    It is crazy how, to the viewer, it appears that you are painting on paper with real media and not on a screen. I’d say that is a testament to the efficacy of Fresco’s brushes. I guess I am just used to Adobe products because Procreate’s interface seems a bit too minimal for me. Of course, for people who don’t use other Adobe programs, it is ridiculous to pay for a subscription. Believe me - I get it. I am a retired graphic designer and it really burns me that they have no options for people with limited incomes who only need 2 or 3 apps and not 15 or 20. $55 bucks a month. UGH. I actually got Adobe to give me the subscription for $19 a month for an entire year because I told them how many thousands of dollars I spent to own my programs only to find out that I would still be bled dry later. If I don’t subscribe, I can’t access 40 years of work. I have Quark docs that are now irretrievable too. Affinity apps are great and the developers are obviously not (yet) crazy greedy. Sadly, I feel their interfaces are too complicated.

Until you mentioned it, I did not realize that Procreate brushes have been raster based. I hadn't even thought of the Raster/Vector topic, which is pretty major. Am I correct in thinking that I could get around that by making the project size larger than needed (that's what I do in my desktop app)?

    There is a free version but without few brushes like comic brushes. What bothers me more is their windows version ain't the same as on the iPad. On Windows it doesn't include live brushes. And no blending tool also sucks I think 🤔
    really cool is the recording feature. Didn't know it before but seems really top 🔝

    Couple things. I think you were very fair in your review. Some other reviews haven't been unbiased. Great video. Fresco version 2 I imagine will make leaps in development. The pricing is going to really hurt the app and I see within the next few months Adobe will do something otherwise this will be a fail. It's also worth mentioning, unlike procreate, Adobe plans to release this to other platforms such as Android. I'm not an Apple guy these days, but really wanting to get back into drawing with a focus of going straight to digital. My options are buying an iPad and procreate.. Or wait for Fresco for android ( already have CC subscription) - Really don't want an IPad. Lol. Hopefully we see Android version soon.

    The problem that keeps me hooked to Adobe is that there's still no comparable vector software for mobile devices as Illustrator Draw. In an agency environment, we don't have the luxury of drawing everything in raster. We're always sharing, blowing things up and working non-destructively. Everyone that touches something needs to manipulate things easily and raster just doesn't do well in our pipeline. Vector is always the best for logos, icons, web art, typography etc...Anything pixel agnostic. I would kill someone as an AD if they handed me a logo as a flat JPG done completely in raster.

    As a brand new iPad user, I have to say that Fresco is so far the most intuitive. I especially love that the three different brush types have their own spots on the toolbar so that I don’t have to go into a panel when I’m making decisions early on. I am, however a CC subscriber, so I didn’t have to pay an additional fee to get going. Don’t get me wrong, though. I hate the software rental model, and I think Adobe should make their products more consistent between one another if they want to stay relevant in the future. I love Fresco right now, but I’m looking forward to learning how to use Procreate. I’ve played around in there, but I don’t have time to discover everything on my own, so I’ll just do some follow-along projects.

But that Fresco sketching brush is ace! Would love to improve the Procreate ones too.

    I agree about the layout of functions. I have this issue with photoshop. When you open a file, what’s first action one takes? It’s “rotate”, so it should be first in the list. But it’s not- I have to search for it. Then it’s “clockwise, counterclockwise”. Why? Is 90, 180 degrees better? Then, you would need levels to adjust the white scanned paper. So this function logically would be second in the list. But it’s not. You also have to search for crop and bunch of other things that I think are not in logical order…

    I am getting rid of Adobe all together. I am a graphic design student, but I am just going to use the computers at the school, because I hate Creative Cloud. CoreSync from creative cloud is sketchy at best. It stops my computer from shutting down and there have been reports that it is a virus or spyware. I have had other users go into my Adobe projects before and many other issues. The main issue, obviously, is the price. It is outrageous, I wish I could just pay a one time fee for apps like back in the day.
    Is there a way to buy an old version of photoshop or AI and still pay a one-time fee without having to use the Creative Cloud bs?
    Thank you for the review. I love procreate. I am buying an iPad again so that I can use it. I got a surface pro, hoping to use AI, but it just was too buggy for me. I wish procreate would do vector. That is biggest issue with ProCreate right now.
