I don't think so. With the internet and how savvy people are to media it wouldn't work. Anyway, it already happened with the 45th President of the USA.
@@terrytalksmovies Spike Lee loved this film. He's on record saying so. Makes me want to see "Bamboozled" which might have been inspired by that among so many other things.
I grew up watching The Andy Griffith Show on re-runs. Never really thought Griffith's acting was particularly good. Years later I would watch A Face In The Crowd and my reaction was the complete opposite. Such a powerful performance and among the best I've seen in any film. Just Wow! I've since watched this a few times.
I've never heard of this movie, and I'm from mid 1950s America! It sounds very good, indeed. You do you, man. If folks can't take the heat, they can always get out of the kitchen.
shockingly great performance by andy griffith - the movie does some have some rough patches and flaws, but very raw and confrontational for a 1957 flick; impressive and important
I am both enthralled and disturbed by this movie. Being from the southern US (Tennessee specifically) Andy Griffith is a national treasure. So this is quite the departure from the easy going sheriff that I can't seem to place the name of right now ( tongue firmly in cheek). This did inspire me to look deeper into Andy Griffith's catalog. I found a film I think it was a TV movie called Murder in Coweta County. I did see where another person commented on Ace in the Hole. Watched it recently and enjoyed it as well. I appreciate the hidden gems that you inadvertently are introducing me to. Keep up the excellent work. As an aside, at the end of this video you said something about politics. I just want to say I have a good friend that has different political views as myself. But we both love movies and old TV shows. I follow your channel for your take on film and television. Not for your politics. Keep introducing or reminding me of things I may be interested in or have forgotten about and I'll keep watching the channel lol. Carry on 😁
I just happen to catch the last half of this film on the Movie Channel (United States) and plan on going back to watch it. Andy Williams was amazing as was Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau. While looking for the film on TH-cam to watch again, I only found clips and your review, where your Channel was recommended. Thank you for a snippet of what it is about. Also, I agree with the points you made at the end and the very tactful way you put it. New Subscriber.
Thanks DeLana. Glad you like the channel but the pedant in me has to tell you, it's Andy Griffiths. I've made the same mistake myself, in a video. Hope you stick around.
Hello, Terry. Can't count how many times I have watched this movie. Just a tour de force. The "hot mic" will get you every time. Have the courage of your ignorance, and keep your mouth shut (in today's world: don't text). I recommend this movie to three people who have probably never watched it: carlson, hannity, and ingram. It will be interesting to see if there is a reaction from the public similar to the one in the movie. Sadly, I doubt it.
I approach this as a horror movie. To me, most horror movies have an otherworldly feel. But this movie shows the horror of a man made monster-it could really happen and it did in the USA with Donald Trump. Thankfully, he was thrown out in 2020. Hopefully, he will be thrown in jail for his crimes.
The character of Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes reminds me of Rush Limbaugh in the facet that he was - to a degree - a charismatic person who could convince anyone to do what he said; sadly, Rush never got caught on a hot mic without his knowledge, as "Lonesome" Rhodes did; if we show this movie to the American Right - especially the Far Right - in order to convince them to get wise to people such as Limbaugh, Hannity, Trump and others of their ilk, most of the American Right would reject your intent. I have this movie on DVD, and it does hold up; thanks for the review.
@@rcrawford42 That's only because the American Right - especially the Far-right - makes for a much more pleasurable target; true, there are some on the Left who are also such targets, but the Right is so much more fun to go after. This show was the brainchild of Joel Surnow, the Rush Limbaugh disciple who foisted upon us the series, "24"; he called it "the Daily Show for conservatives"; the show just was not that funny, even among some conservatives - and the series was yanked after the full thirteen episodes aired.
I've watched this numerous times. Andy Griffith never liked this film later. I still think it's his best work.
It's 100% his best work. It's a pity nobody took the warning about the dangers of a media created monster.
Definitely his best role....love that it was before the Andy Griffith show and showed his range.
He became the character during filming and wrecked his marriage. But he acknowledges its a great film and among his best work
I've watched this movie three times. Andy Griffith is a force. Very apropos of the current political climate.
I agree. A cautionary tale well told.
OMFG!!!! I thought I was the only one on earth who remembered this movie!! This is a classic!! So glad people are still talking about this film!!
It's still very timely.
It deserves a modern remake.

It is it called Trump running for trump
So glad I found this movie. Shows me that what is happening in 2024 is not new. Demagoguery is real.
Yep and very wealthy people depend on it.

For me, It's Andy Griffith's best role.
I’ve watched several criticisms of this movie today and find yours to be the most coherent and succinct. Thank you!
My pleasure.
I'm embarrassed that I haven't seen it, being a big fan of Ace in the Hole. Thanks for a great time in your company as usual Terry.
My pleasure Iain. If you follow the DVD link in the notes, the DVD version is about $US5 if they'll ship it here.

Thanks, mate! It's a definite classic and it has a lot to say about the contemporary conjunction between entertainment and politics.
It's rare Hollywood comes out with a movie this excellent these days imo.
Different times.

Absolutely. The sly cunning of Lonesome Rhodes is impressive.
Thanks Terry! I love your channel. Found it by accident. Glad I did.. You made me want to see this movie for sure. 😊
You should see A Face In The Crowd. There's a great Criterion edition if you can find it. 😀
Another one I saw years ago and need to rewatch.
Definitely do. Current politics is foreshadowed here.

Andy Griffith not Andy Williams, the singer.

It's one of those cautionary tale movies and the ending predicts the career arcs of a lot of arseholes.
I’ll have to check this out
A lot of contemporary politics is foreshadowed in this movie.
Good discussion. Thanks.
My pleasure. This one's a classic.
@@terrytalksmovies Very much. Amazing, really.
The end of this movie would not work today. After being shamed, Lonesome would just double down and be back on TV next week.
Yep because spin doctors and media managers practice an evil art these days.
Walter Matthau’s character tells Rhodes that he will be back on TV. Just not next week and in a different format.
just finished it…cannot believe how they see clearly what will coming
It was almost a template for our recent past.
Matlock was pretty wild in his younger days
Andy Griffith was a good character actor.
He was a good actor full stop,

Yep
Some people are a bit precious 🙄, anyway, great video. Keep being you!
You know damned well I will.

Yep. Sometimes fiction presents behaviours before we have medical diagnoses for them.
where was this England ? where you were only allowed out 1 hour a day ?
I don't understand your question.
Reminds me of the charm of trump!🧐
Trump as charm? 😉
Could never be made today. They would have to be conservative
Our media landscape has been so weaponised by RWNJs, the message of this film wouldn't work.

If that not Bill Clinton
More Trump than Clinton. A grifter with no moral compass.
