    Hi Thank you for another great comparison video, two great knives with really good blade pattern. I have the Swayback whittler, which it a great useful knife, easy to carry and very functional.
    I have just started collecting, mainly Rough Rider knives, I like the following Patterns, Stockman, Canoe and just recently the, Barlow although things change…
    Talking about whittlers, I just received a new knife in, a RR Classic Carbon ii Whittler in Black Micarta, a lovely looking knife, small, although very functional, I whittled a piece of old oak last night and it managed it very well.
    Take care
    Sam

    My black Micarta were crap compared to the Yellow Comp. The yellow comp were spot on. Both are Sway Backs. The Seahorse is different animal. I think the blue liners is just some kind of blue goop they used to fill in gaps with the micarta.
    Mind you I'm a big fan of Rough Ryder but the quality of my Black Micrata was just poor compared to the Yellow Comp. Definitely a very useful knife and a very cool pattern. You are correct, these are the first two of the in the line up. The pattern was first used by Case.This was the 355 pattern introduced in 1993. So it is recent design.

      We agree that their naming in general needs improving. Useful history info again, Tobias. Thank you. One of the few RR patterns I'm in on from the very beginning.

      I don't think this has anything to do with the series. I have two of the 2021 production yellow comp whittlers. One was perfect, the other was an absolute trainwreck with all three blades being heavily twisted.

      @@rockets4kids, so they really need to tighten up the QC on the knives and stop worrying about the packaging! The only place I’ve seen issues with the packaging is with the Rough Ryder Reserves. People have complained about boxes being unglued and tubes dented. But those magnetic boxes can survive a nuclear Holocaust!

    • @rockets4kids
      @rockets4kids 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias Those fancy magnetic boxes can't be cheap. I'd much rather see them put those costs into making a better product.

      @@rockets4kids , agreed! What worse is they seem to be spreading beyond SMKW house brands. They are a waste of space. They make a pretty box for gift wrapping and presentations but once you have the item, they take up space and are destined eventually to a landfill. Too much over packaging. If you could easily remove the liners inside, then maybe you could use them for storing stuff. But often you could fit 1/2 dozen knives in one box! A smaller box with a knife wrapped in paper is the way to go. And you could still put a pretty picture on the small box.
      I think they make there money off of these boxes buy simply making tens of thousands of boxes of the same size regardless of knife size. My bet is the entire process is automated so labor cost are minimal.

    Another great piece! I like the Micarta one WAY better. I just wonder why they gave it TWO pen blades...

    How funny. Just received my first ever order from SMKW about two days ago, and both of these WHITTLER's were in it. I knew by looking that I'd love this pattern. I have several Rough Riders purchased online and they have started to become favorites in my EDC world. Let me ask you this, does the spacer which divides the two springs and then ends to allow the two springs to act as one for the main blade, does that spacer seem "proud" at its end point? Both of mine do, and I'm worried this might find a thread at some point and get snagged and thus bent. You think that may be a possibility? Which slip do you use? Large or medium, or a different brand? I do not want to return these, as I just called about a medium toothpick in the same order.
    I'm very new to your channel, think the 'Cat Man' may have sent me, or you popped up after one of his vids was over, otherwise how I got here is a mystery as all my video information requests were about particular knife models.
    Finally, just a last thought; I like your "no bs" style of review, you get to the point without a long story. Don't get me wrong, I like stories, just not with every review when I want some facts to help make a decision. Best wishes. JH

      Thanks for the kind comments John. For these RR whittlers I think the Rough Ryder medium slip will work best. It might be a little tight at first, but it will break in. For proud springs a slip is a good idea. I doubt it would damage the spring, but it might pull the seam from your pocket liner. Hope that help. If you like the channel be sure to sub'. There's lots of traditional knife content to come. Take care.

    I'm not much of a whittler but I don't understand the purpose of two identical secondary pen blades. It seems to me that making one be a coping blade would make more sense for detailed wood carving.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the straight edge would make for a good carver.

      I bought one for whittling and yes I intend on modifying one pen blade into a coping style

    • @rockets4kids
      @rockets4kids 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is nothing stopping you from re-grinding the blades into whatever shape you desire. But I doubt anyone is going to be doing any actual whittling with those two secondary blades. The primary blade sits so high up in the frame and the swedge is so sharp you'll give up quickly. That said, if you grind off the swedge and drop the kick then the secondary blade become reasonable to whittle with. The knife works even better if grind off the nail nick entirely, shorten the blade by about 1/2 inch, and then drop the kick as far as possible. Then you can actually use those secondary blades for whittling.

    I'm a carbon steel lover, and I love the pattern of these knives, but I will not buy one of these knives. The reason being that I do not like T10 steel. Yes, it's carbon steel, but T10 is so tough that it's a devil to sharpen. Carbon steel's sharpening characteristic is the main reason I love it so much. This model in 1095 or CV would be an insta-buy for me, but with T10, I think I'd actually rather have stainless. Why would Rough Ryder use T10? Cost? I really don't get it. Maybe you can tell me. Thank you for a comprehensive video.

      I can't say for certain my guess is it's likely used due to it's low production cost. Thanks Kasimir.

    One of my pen blades on my whittler hits the main blade so it doesn't close that well. Can I fix that?

      One of my primary complaints is the naming of many of their patterns. I'm a stickler for consistency here. It is particularly critical in this day and age to describe product correctly for recognition and differentiation when we cannot gain a sense of scale or have a first hand look at something.
