Texas Archery Nilgai | On the Hunt

  • In this episode Janis is hunting the thick-hided nilgai in south Texas, with Troy Fowler, a.k.a. the Ranch Fairy. The nilgai is a big, tough antelope that is known for “soaking up the lead.” Janis and Troy thought it would be the perfect animal for testing the efficacy of a heavy arrow set-up. The wary nilgai prove to be difficult to get within bow range, but luck eventually shines on the team, presenting a shot opportunity. Janis and Troy finish the episode dissecting a nilgai bull, learning how the arrow and broadhead performed.

    Troy is really a gem in the archery hunting community. The things he advocates for wouldn't seem abnormal or profound to long range rifle guys, but for some reason there is still a lot of resistance in the archery community. I am 100% on board with the heavy, high FOC arrow train. Most people who shoot my arrows jump on board too when they hear how quiet it is off the bow and how hard they hit.

    • @soonerfrac4611
      @soonerfrac4611 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I heard one lightweight advocate justify it by saying you should shoot them where it counts. Even talking about how he got complete pass through on a bison at distance with flappers. Sounds great and all till you make a mistake.

    • @F14Goose37
      @F14Goose37 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@soonerfrac4611 Even if you are perfect, as soon as the arrow leaves the bow, the animal has more say than you on where that arrow hits it. Your arrow is not beating the sound it makes when it is shot and the animal can and often will move when they hear it. As soon as people realize animals are not stationary foam targets their perfect shot placement argument becomess a moot point, especially at distance. At that point it becomes what can your arrow do when the shot is not perfect.

      There are professional archery tradesmen that have their own brands and associated content creation avenues here on youtube. There are multiple videos of the failures of certain arrow prescriptions, but there is one in particular that seems to now be used as an advertisement for effectiveness. Bow is a highest end cost wise and the shooter is pulling 80lbs at 32". The video is a 485 grain arrow with a rage stopping after 5 inches into an antelope..... its wild that it was considered a success.

      It’s crazy that people still think that “aiming where you’re supposed to” works on a live critter. As you said animals move, the wind gusts, other animals spook them, soooo many variables that are outside the control of the hunter.

    I’ve watched a lot of Meateater over the years, and for them to acknowledge Ed Ashby and his work means a lot.
