    Idk if it was intentional but I actually love the loophole of “can cast two levelled spells in a turn if one of them doesn’t consume a spell slot”, because the whole idea of those features that give you free uses of a spell is to make it seem like the spell is innate to you. Of course you can use it more easily than anyone else!

      Yeah, I like that. I don't have any particular thoughts on the mechanical balance of the rule (I'll leave that to people with the resources to do extended playtesting), but I always like when details of the rules are set up to reinforce the lore/setting/story.

      I like it at face value, but like the dudes mentioned, I am very concerned about how it interacts with magic items. It might also seriously boost the sorcerer's power considering they could theoretically wield a staff of power and use quicken spell very consistently. It just makes me worry that the loophole will further create a divide between high level casters and martial focused classes.

      Yes, but activating a Spell Scroll will usually take up your Action already. So you can also cast a Bonus Action spell with a spell slot. Or if the spell in the Spell Scroll takes a Bonus Action to cast, you can also cast an Action spell with a spell slot.

      That’s the point of surprise. It rewards smart playing. Another instance of 5e discouraging thinking. If the PCs set up an ambush and pass all their checks to do it flawlessly. They have already earned the benefit of this amazing advantage.
      They already had checks to set it up and had the d20 tension. To do all that setup for an ambush then have it overruled by d20s not going in their favor is to say, “don’t bother using your brains.”

      @@nickzema4200 I would imagine that some DMs may still have a "surprise round" (which I know, never actually existed) that rewards smart playing - basically, if PCs stealth up to enemies and commit to certain actions before the DM says "roll for initiative", those actions could/should still happen. Yeah, I guess this is homebrewing surprise a bit, and wouldn't happen every time, but I could still see this rewarding smart playing.

      Extra skill proficiencies have tremendous fall off in value past the first handful. Your proficiency in animal handling is still only going to come up once a campaign. Plus your GM is going to make you fail skill checks to some extent. So by having huge bonuses to everything, the DM is just going to raise the DCs ultimately causing your allies to fail checks, even if you don’t.

    • @nadirku
      @nadirku หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andrewpeli9019 I guess this is what has me wondering where Skills should operate on par with certain magic spells.
      Like if you want to use Athletics to climb along a ceiling, to mimic the Spider Climb spell, what should the DC be? If a Rogue, or a high level Barbarian, could be setup to automatically meet that DC, it would be mechanically close to being able to cast Spider Climb without a spell slot via Ability Checks, which seems to be on par with a number of existing/revised Warlock invocations, and not excessively game breaking.
      With a Disguise Kit Tool Proficiency, and Reliable talent, what should the game mechanics overlap be between those and a Warlock with the Mask of Many Faces, or Master of Myriad Forms invocations? Does using a Disguise Kit automatically fail the way illusions, and transformation are seen through by Truesight, or could a disguise kit at least potentially fool a creature with Truesight, since disguises are not "Visual illusions", or being "transformed by magic"?
      I really hope the DMG will have a section going over skills in more depth than a lot of what we have seen, and to also try to adjust the power of Skills, and Tools up a notch.

    I predict that a quick house rule for backgrounds will be to make custom backgrounds. It sounds like all you need to do is:
    1. Pick a name appropriate to what you are imagining
    2. Pick an origin feat and explain why such a background would have it
    3. Pick 3 ability scores that make sense for said background and do the +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1, or just take the +2 and +1 or 3 +1s in whatever you want.
    4. Not sure, but maybe some gold for mundane items

      50 gold, every background gets 50 GP or a list of items and some extra gold equaling 50 GP. You could also take an existing background and just tweak the ASIs and/ or Origin Feat. In 2014 you can cast a spell, be counterspelled by an enemy, then as a reaction, you can counter that counterspell.
    In 2024 that will be less of a thing. You can still do it if someone counters your cantrip (and you want to spend a counterspell to make sure your cantrip happens). I hate to be 'that guy' but in the 2024 players handbook RAW would be that exhaustion DOES apply to death savings throws, as it is a D20 test. However this does mean that things like Bless do indeed apply to that D20 test also.
    I do have a homebrew at my table which might make this a little less oppressive: Death saves are a D20 +/- your CON mod. Reason: Con is your physical fortitude.
    Source:
    Exhausted [Condition]
    D20 Tests Affected. When you make a D20 Test, the roll is reduced by 2 times your Exhaustion level.
    D20 [Test]
    D20 Tests encompass the three main d20 rolls of the game: ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws. If something in the game affects D20 Tests, it affects all three of these rolls. The DM determines whether a D20 Test is warranted in a given circumstance. See also chapter 1 (“D20 Tests”).
    Saving Throw
    A saving throw-also called a save-represents an attempt to avoid or resist a threat. You normally make a saving throw only when a rule requires you to do so, but you can decide to fail the save without rolling. The result of a save is detailed in the effect that allowed it. If a target is forced to make a save and lacks the ability score used by it, the target automatically fails. See also chapter 1 (“D20 Tests”).
    Death Saving Throw
    A player character must make a Death Saving Throw (also called a Death Save) if they start their turn with 0 Hit Points. See also chapter 1 (“Damage and Healing”).
    Whenever you start your turn with 0 Hit Points, you must make a Death Saving Throw to determine whether you creep closer to death or hang on to life. Unlike other saving throws, this one isn’t tied to an ability score. You’re in the hands of fate now.
    To summarise:
    Exhaustion is a condition which affects D20 tests, and D20 tests are defined by ability checks, attack rolls and saving throws. Which a death saving throw, is a saving throw. Thus, exhaustion affects it as RAW.
    Edit: This could of course change when the new DM's guide comes out.

    I think you guys could have been more clear about the "one leveled spell per turn" rule. At 7:19, Kelly says that the rule "still means that you can't cast a bonus action spell such as let's say a sorcerer using a quicken spell and then cast another spell on top of that. You never could, but now it's crystal clear." But that's not what the rule was. You could still cast a spell on top of a bonus action spell, so long as that spell was a cantrip. Also, the new rule allows you to cast a cantrip and a leveled spell during the same turn, but has removed the restriction that the leveled spell has to be the bonus action spell. In other words, you can now cast a leveled spell with your action, and a cantrip with a bonus action. Granted, there weren't that many bonus action cantrips in the 2014 PHB (magic stone and shillelagh were the only ones I think?), so the rule won't get much play in that regard unless they've included more of those spells in the 2024 PHB. I did have quite some times that I first casted healing word, only to find out I couldn't cast slow as a follow up, feeling sad that I didn't think about it earlier.
      I have seen that the wizard subclasses let certain spells be cast as a bonus action (the abjuration one has dispell magic, the illusionist has... some illusion spell)

      If you cast a cantrip and someone counters your cantrip ... then you haven't cast a spell with a spell slot this turn. That would enable you to counter a counterspell (if that was worth your cantrip)
      If you cast a spell using an ability (several classes and subclasses get the ability to cast spells once without expending a spell slot) that could then be countered and you still haven't cast a spell with a spell slot, so, you could use a counterspell that way. For example, if you were a ... paladin/wizard for some reason. And you used your free divine smite which is now a spell and can be countered, an enemy can counter your smite and you can now counter that counter because you haven't yet cast a spell using a spell slot.

    I don't like the surprise change. It completely ruins the flavor of the assassin rogue sneaking up behind a target unseen. Ambushing is powerful, and it should stay that way. Planning an ambush takes effort, and that effort should be rewarded. Equally, it is important to stay aware of your surroundings to not get ambushed. Tactically, that just makes sense.

    • @zero11010
      @zero11010 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Completely? Doesn't it just make it a skill based thing? Some characters are harder to sneak up on. Does "this doesn't work 100% of the time" mean the thing is "completely" ruined to you?
      It's less fun if there's no chance of failure. That's mostly what this does. And, as you get to a higher and higher level and get more bonuses for your initiative you'll have then worked to increase the odds of doing the thing you're trying to do. Which is how skill and experience should work. Right?

      I've had times where I was an assassin rogue, snuck up on a guy, stepped up and slit his throat unawares, only for the DM to have him turn around and fight back. Definitely a feels bad. So outside of Adventurers League, you'll just have to have a talk with your DM about expectations, same as before.
      Generally, I'd think that a sudden attack from the rogue would CAUSE the initiative rolls, and then the first round of combat with the new surprise rules would happen, after that attack, but that's just how I read it.

    • @hkfifty871
      @hkfifty871 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I get why they toned it down, because it really was a bit too powerful and it made encounters swing way too much into either “way too easy” or “way too hard”.
      But… yeah, just turning it into disadvantage is rather dull, and I think it tones it down too much, where surprise doesn’t really feel powerful enough. It’s going to feel extremely unsatisfying for the party to think they get the drop on an enemy, only for them to roll well and still go first. Or for a DM to have monsters ambush the party, but whoops, the Rogue still had a 16 on initiative because their bonuses are so high, and the monsters rolled a 4.
      Suddenly the combat doesn’t FEEL like an ambush. And while it may feel kinda cool at the time if you’re the person who managed to weasel out of an “ambush” because of lucky rolls, it’s not a particularly fun time for the group as a while, and it’s not a very memorable game experience.
      The way I personally have been running surprise (and probably will continue to) is that the surprised creatures just go to the bottom of initiative.
      Combined with the advantage to attack rolls for (usually) being hidden/stealthed, it seems to smooth out the peaks and valleys nicely, where it’s still very tactically useful, but not overwhelming.

      @@hkfifty871Rogue sadly can’t roll a 16 in the new rules. Reliable talent has change to when you make a ability check one of your skill or tool proficiency on a d20 . As stated by the alert feat you add your proficiency bonus to your initiative roll. However it does not state you are proficient initiative rolls only your adding your bonus. So at most the assassin rogue is rolling with advantage or no advantage for any other subclass .you get at max is 5+6+1d20 roll at level 17. So you can only get a guaranteed 12.

I described my Tabaxi Bard boing so focused on grooming himself that he wasn't paying attention to anything else. Party walks up to something suspicious and starts combat. For backgrounds you aren't able to mix and match which version of Magic Initiate you want, each one is tied to your background. There is only one background to get Magic Initiate (Wizard), one for Cleric and one for Druid. Sage (Wizard Initiate) in particular doesn't give you any boosts to DEX or STR, which is tougher to use for a martial build.

    • @0Fyrebrand0
      @0Fyrebrand0 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wait, so the backgrounds dictate the exact ability score increases you have to take? You don't have the option to swap them or make your own decision? In the 2014 PHB, you didn't actually have to choose one of the pre-made backgrounds exactly as written, they were more like readymade examples for convenience. You could always make your own background from scratch, or have some wiggle room to edit a pre-made background, within limits, but I think a lot of people glossed over that part of the book and didn't realize it. I really hope the new 2024 book has a "DIY" option for backgrounds, because if not that seems like a step backward and very restricting.

    • @robertpower8374
      @robertpower8374 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@0Fyrebrand0 Each background has a choice of three stats that it can increase, +1 in each or (more likely) +1/+2 in two of them. There is a good article on DnDBeyond about it and Reddit will find you the 16 backgrounds with the combinations available.
      From what we have seen there is no custom background option in the new PHB, it's suspected to be in the DMG. The stats and feats mean they have more of a mechanical impact.
      I don't think it's better or worse than the 2014 PHB rules for stat allocation, all that has happened if they have moved the goal posts. It used to be that you were more likely to see a High Elf wizard, whereas now you are more likely to see wizards who are criminals or merchants.
