    I remember cutting flower motifs and gluing them to a Mother's day card at school. This took me straight back to being eight years old. Thank you!

    I saw this done using freezer paper to lay-out pieces so when you fuse them together you can just peel them off the foundation after you iron them down. Saves that whole cutting out the foundation step

      Hi Linda, that is another option for smaller collages, though it is a bit slippery to work on and doesn’t come in 42” width. But thanks for sharing your tip. 😀

      Does that really work?
      Can you reuse the parchment paper or no?

    • @YarnKilla54
      @YarnKilla54 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don’t think parchment paper is the same as freezer paper? Freezer paper by Reynolds is probably what you’re referring to. Yes that works

      @@YarnKilla54 is Parchment paper, not Freezer paper for collage.

    Thank you for talking about whisper lite. I always have to do what I’m not supposed to do and I really want to make a collage quilt that will actually be used as a quilt. I want to make it out of hand dyed linen fabric scraps (as you know linen is a nightmare to work with but the fusing should help!) but I’d like to keep everything as soft as possible. I want the quilt to look worn and loved (I swoon when I see those old fashioned quilts with all the ripples and worn edges!)
    Thank you for taking the time to make this video and help those of us who do not have a quilting group near by to learn techniques from. You tube is a life saver!

    Hello. I am new to collage quilting. I have been sewing since 7th grade, when moved to U.S I learned about quilts, latter in age 30 I learned about collage quilting, what a beautiful idea. Your videos are amazing, step by step instruction, no rushing with words, no skipping steps like others do. You are amazing! ❤.. Thank you so much! Can't wait to make wall art! 😊

    OhOHOh! Your Work is just beautiful. And I love your sweet laughter! Our Family Heritage Handiworks is something I’d like to preserve for future Nieces & Nephews. Your Work has helped me in making considerations for various projects to hand down. It seemed a shame to me that my Mother’s, Grandmother’s & favourite Auntie’s Handiworks might fall to the wayside, if left in their current, well-cared for states. Dishcloths featuring cotton and silken DMC threads, yarns and foundational fabrications like quilt backings & Dutch Doll show pieces. My Auntie left to Mom & me a few prized like her crocheted queen sized bedspread done in a white cotton threading. Gram embroidered for my Hope chest a set of luxurious, thick, softest cotton pillowcases & dishcloths. I use Grams cases on my bed, with sheer delight! For we shared her bed when I was little, they’re quite precious to me. Auntie Shirley too stitched embroidery a set of white, cotton, kitchen towels as did Mom. So, the dish towels I feel might become lost over time, making Art pieces for all to enjoy seems the best possible fit!

      Thank you for sharing your family story of stitchery. You obviously come from a talented family and it’s so wonderful to have those heirlooms. The ones that get used will eventually wear out but for me I’d rather they be used and thought of rather than languishing in a dark cupboard. Granted, that also depends on the piece. We also have family stitchery and it is precious 😍 blessings to you and yours 🤗

      I have an older cousin who just lost everything passed down to her when her house burned down, Have been trying to think of a way to replace some of it for her. (One of them was a Lone Star quilt) Since reading your comment I think I will try to take some of her Mother's original art pieces and stitch them for her on this foundation. (I have not heard about Hope Chests since I was a teenager heading out on my own and receiving mine.) Thank you, your comment stirred up inspiration and

    Thank you so much. I really appreciate your work. Your instruction is much better than someone who tried to help me today. You are a great instructor and I loved seeing your work. from Queensland Australia. I don't think I should look at others because I need to do things in a simple way. Years ago - maybe over 50, I did a heart with dried flowers and sent it to my husband. He is no longer alive but I still have that heart. Your heart is a lovely way to say 'I love you' to someone.

    I learned to sew on my grandmother’s singer sewing machine . I was 4 almost 5 when I sat down at it for the first time. It had the original case/desk not sure what type of wood. But the footpedal was bigger than me lol very ornate very large and very metal lol. It was her mothers possibly around 1870? I’m now 51 years old. When I was young I had a chance to acquire it but I did not. My father sold it after she passed away. I could kick myself now. You are the first one I’ve seen in a video using an older singer! What year is your singer sewing machine it’s beautiful! By the way I was a midlife crisis baby, my grandmother was born in 1885 she died when I was 14. I even have her ocean waves, Dresden and drunkards path quilt that were quilted on her sewing machine. I would love to have an old vintage sewing machine and finish the set! Double wedding ring and the basket Are the two I would like to do.I’m in love with the style of your sewing machine dying to know what year it is from or if you have a model number!

      Hi Susan, I’m not sure of the exact year but it’s from the 1950’s and it is a featherweight model. They are quite popular and you can usually find them on eBay or through private sellers. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time when I found mine. It’s wonderful that you have your grandmothers precious quilts. 😍

    • @thistledownquilts
      @thistledownquilts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Moira, thank you so much. Yes the Whisperlite foundation is much lighter weight and also has the added benefits of the 42” width, and the ability to tack the collage to the background because it’s so sheer. I do ship to the UK from my Etsy site - planetpollyanna -

    What color thread do you recommend for sewing around the heart before quilting? Also, how would you quilt it? Inside and around the outside.

    • @thistledownquilts
      @thistledownquilts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Susan, I used a medium pink to edge stitch. A pink variegated would be good too. I then outline quilted it both on the inside and outside, and then simple straight line quilting horizontally and vertically about 2” apart. Thanks for asking 😀

    • @thistledownquilts
      @thistledownquilts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jan, Thanks for your comment. Yes, everyone has their own preference of techniques and the best way to beat the dust issue is to either use a hand held vacuum tube ( not a powerful vacuum) with a stocking over the end to lightly vacuum the surface, or to simply gently shake it out like a rug. Happy quilting 😀
