  • In 2019 I was diagnosed with High Grade Serous Carcinoma of the Uterus, an extremely aggressive cancer with a high rate of recurrence. In the spring of 2021 after being diagnosed with a recurrence of Uterine Serous Carcinoma, I had a Bard Chemo Port installed at the time of surgery. This is my experience with accessing the port for the first time for a Port Flush along with tips to make it more comfortable.
Thank you to everyone for all the warm wishes. Thanks for following my Cancer Journey.

So glad your first port flush went well! That lidocaine cream is a life saver:). I also did the cling wrap trick, worked great!
I was only able to get a blood return on my port the first couple of times - fluid can push in, but pulling back was an issue. Happens commonly, if a little bit of tissue forms around the end of the hose, and acts like a seal when you try to draw out. No problem infusing, but just had to do blood from my arm. But other than that, never had any issues - so glad i was able to use it as an option!
That shirt is SUCH a great idea! Glad you’re looking well, good luck with your rounds. Thinking of you and sending

Thank you so much for commenting! Interesting about the problem with blood draws. I know the port will make my the infusion much easier! Take care and keep in touch💪

Thank you for sharing your journey. Mines seem to be a hit and miss. Picc line infected, so I had to. 3rdccycle access directly to my vein (most painful thing) cause I couldn’t get a appt or the appt was too early for me to hold my blood thinners. They kept rescheduling and it became 3 days before my 4th cycle. I’m scared it’s too early because of the incisions to put numbing and access. Although it seems you can access right away. Thank you for posting!

A latex glove can be used to apply the lidocaine to prevent your fingers from numbing.

Thank you so much for the info. I have to undergo this type of chemio in a couple of weeks and know nothing about it, so everything is very helpful. IpDo you have any sleeping tricks. Wishing you all the best.

I am so very sorry Marilyn! I just went through my second recurrence. This one was found in my groin lymph node. I had surgery a week ago to remove it and will find out if I need further treatment when I have my post op. This occurred just 3 months after finishing 6 rounds of chemo. Please keep me updated, My email address is captainrankin@hotmail.com if you want to message me. Take care!

This is the only part I'm really scared about..when they put the chemo line into the port. I wish I had known about the numbing cream.😬

I had no problems with the port and it was so much easier than having it in the veins. Stay strong and positive!

You don’t have to put the cream way up to the neck. Just around the port where they put the needle. But not up to the neck. I hope you won against cancer and cancer free.

Hi Jessica. I was told that sometimes the tube that goes up your neck gets sore, so I always added a little more than probably necessary. I never had any problems or pain. I just got the port removed and have been NED for about 18 months. Good luck on your journey!
