It will be mentioned that his father, who is in the video with him, was dying of kidney disease at the filming, as he had donated one earlier in life and the one left was failing. James sang this in one take, and his dad had not heard it yet. He didn't want any auto tune added, so what you hear is from the video (with some harmonies added at one point)
A long-distance relative saw the video and reached out and was a match for donating his kidney, so his father is doing better.
The whole song is also about the turning of the tables of a child and a parent later at the end of life.
Parents put out their children's clothes, read stories, leave a light on for you when you stay out late, and check for monsters in your room when you are small. But now it's his turn to do those things for his dad now.
When they were both in the British Army, that is what they would say to each other when leaving for combat, that "they are just 2 grown men saying goodbye".
Everyone at the filming was crying, but the father said, "I'm not dead yet!"

This song.. I grew without a father.. so I hear it.
" you're not my mom, I'm not not your daughter" .. I miss my mother so much. 😢

This was done in 1 take.. he wanted realness in the room. His dad got his surgery in 2020.. both fought in the Queens military.
    Hero upon hero.

Both James and his dad served in the British Military - James was an Officer in the Life Guards and served with NATO in Kosovo in 1999 amd his father had been a Colonel (helicopter pilot) The line in the song 'i'm not you son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye' was how they said their farewells before being deployed.
A great reaction. Thank you x

This song kills me. My husband and I had 5 sons and 1 daughter. One son died at birth. He was an amazing dad, and yes, our one daughter was the princess. My husband died suddenly when our children were ages 6 to 23, joining our son, his namesake, in heaven. I was widowed at only 41 yrs old. Just 4 weeks after his sudden death, my own mother, who was just 61, was diagnosed with terminal lung and brain cancer. I cared for her and watched her die while in complete shock and grief, trying to get the kids through grieving their dad. I was a mess. Those months were a blur of unbearable pain. Our 23 yr old son moved back home to try to help me, and I see him teaching his younger brothers all the things their dad got to teach him growing up because he got him until young adulthood.

My dad was present but his idea of interaction with me was to tell me how everything I did was wrong or to get him and his buddies another beer. He is 83 now and life has slowed him down a lot and last fall as i was mowing his yard he came out to chew my ass out like I was 10 years old , I am 60. I told him how I really felt for the first time in my life. I felt horrible after but now we are closer than we have ever been

My father died this past june and we hadnt spoke in 16 years. I found out through alternative means. He never stayed in my life, but somewhere inside me i wonder if i was somewhere in his last thoughts, i always longed for him to love me but it just never happened, he left me with anger and a handful of memories, it must be so wonderful to have a father you truly love as much as james blunt loves his dad. 😢😢😢

    No...😢I'm not crying.
This one is tough. I can never watch it without tears.
While I don't have a relationship with my father my papa was my dad. He passed away last month from a fall he took outside. I never got a chance to say goodbye.
I'm just thankful and blessed I had him in my life.
I hope you can find a way to have peace with your son and your father Ray.
Peace and love always until there is no more!😭❤

Ray, i have watched alot of reactions and discussion about this song, thought your view of the song and the lyrics were bang on, you did a great job with it and relating to life in general. What an amazing song by James, surprising how deep he goes and how he touches so many people with the song. Great job with the analysis of it.

When I had nightmares as a child, my Dad would come in my room and chase the monsters away so I could go back to sleep. I did the same for my children and they do the same for theirs. I could control my emotions until James sang those words.

It's crazy.. growing up, my mom was someone I looked up to.. until I got hurt and actually had to depend on her.. took a long time to realize that the best lessons I learned from her came after I faced the fact that the role model mother was a costume worn only as long as I performed..
Wanting better for my kids, I've tried to teach them to live a life they love even if people laugh.. let them lol they'll thank you for the giggle if they ever grow up..
Let yourself learn from every lesson life lays before you bc there's no better way to honestly get to know not only yourself but those around you for who you truly are as people, as friend for your strengths and weaknesses..
You're only weakened by your weaknesses when you won't face them or wear them as disguises you hide behind ... bc excuses make for faulty armor ... the face you see in the mirror will still be you.
When trying anything new, remember that the first thing you learn on the ice is how to fall. Being scared to fall leaves you leaning leary of it happening.. let it lol get it outta the way so you gain the insight needed to prevent it happening again or at the very least soften the landing so you can get back up.
Last but not least be smart about stupid ish bc life has no sympathy for a lack of common sense and will laugh at you if you let your arrogance leave you ignorant. Brilliant people do stupid things all the time, but only the smart ones get to do more stupid ish .. making memories that make it all worthwhile...
Much love and mad respect #Ray ❤️❤️

Every father and every son is playing a role. The role of father or the role of son. You act differently around your child than you do your friends. I love that james is saying its the end and the time is up so we can lose the roles and just ve ourselves. For the first time in their lives they are meeting not as father and son but just as they are, two grown men. Men who have made mistakes.

The monsters James is speaking of are metaphorical. When a person is a child they are afraid that a monster is hiding underneath their bed or in their closet. Now that the roles are reversed and James is taking care of his father, and tucking him in at night he’s saying don’t be afraid it’s my turn to chase the monsters away

I’m sure you’re gonna hear this 1 million times but you have to hear the Iam Tongi version. he looks like that guy who passed away the Hawaiian guy who played the ukulele. Anyway, he sang this at his audition last year at American Idol and end of winning the whole thing and I’m pretty sure it was because of this song I know it was because of this song. I love James Blunt, but iam 0:08 is better on this song.! James story is crazy I don’t know exactly how it goes but when he wrote goodbye my lover, the sun was so huge and never forget the other song he did off that album, but that was probably almost 20 years ago between Albums. He was like a special forces in the British military never actually even heard people say that he help to stop World War III basically from happening.. you have to google him and read about him he’s a fascinating dude but he does have sad eyes or some people call it 100 yards there for a sniper. But this song kills me my father and myself. I’ve been tired could be my entire life and he’s been sick for several years and the end is very near, first time I heard this I didn’t even make it halfway before I was hysterical crying when that comes, I know I’m gonna lose part of myself forever. Fortunately, for James, his dad was able to get the transplant he needed. Apparently a great uncle had the same blood type. It was either a kidney I believe and he was a day or two from passing. Also, when he says, take the monsters away when your little kid just monsters in the closet or under the bed announces dad‘s last time in the bed so just worry about yourself. Don’t worry about the monsters I’ll take care of them.. yes, that is his dad and he did almost die but he is still alive at this moment and doing well. You have to watch the one I told you about from American Idol. His dad just died like six months before his audition and he showed a clip. There’s so many clips of him and his dad on TH-cam with him, singing his dad doing back up vocals. It’s amazing. This one is my favorite. He’s on the left of his dad’s all the way to the right. This song is dope too nobody ever heard of it called Clay pigeon. th-cam.com/video/yNQXWmVQe4w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yFioZyJTj2KBwQsD

Dude, what I've found works with my son when he messes up, because like yours, he knows and he knows that I know that he knows better. Instead of reacting in anger, I wait. I take him out to eat at a local diner, and I ask him questions. We're in a setting where we can't lose our tempers without looking awful, so I hear him out. If punishment has to happen, which is usually taking away video games, I explain to him why I have to do that. And he's pretty receptive most of the time. Open dialog goes a long way.
Not trying to unsolicit advice to you, since you talked about it publicly. Just my two cents. You seem like a great Dad though, just for the fact that you are thinking about this stuff.
