    Been at odds with my father most of my adult life. Listened to this bloody song and phoned him immediately to say I loved him. You nailed it, man. This song just exudes healing where healing didn't seem possible. Kudos.

    James and his Dad are both former British army officers, who have both seen active service. This is his Dad sitting with him. He was dying from stage 4 kidney failure. For an Army officer to openly show such raw emotion is so brave. He showed so much vulnerability doing this. Thankfully a donor was eventually found and James' Dad survived. James donated all proceeds of this song to a Veterans charity. Such respect for them both. ❤

    • @cherrylsagan63
      @cherrylsagan63 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The donor was a distant relative who happened to see the video on TH-cam. He contacted the Blunt family and said he would give one of his kidneys if it was compatible. It was a perfect match and Col. Blunt is doing well, thank God and the distant relative.

    • @scottishpensioner2447
      @scottishpensioner2447 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Not only was Col. Blunt dying when this video was shot, he had donated one of his own kidneys already! What an amazing family. The line "I'm not your son you're not my father , we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was what James said to his father when he left for his first tour (when both of them knew James might be killed).

    This was a tribute to his very ill father who he thought he was going to lose. His condition had deteriorated dramatically and they believed he would die before a donor was found so this was James’ goodbye to his dad. It was done in one take, the emotion is absolutely real. His producers wanted to correct the few places where his voice cracked a little and James refused, wanting it to be authentic.

  • @TripletDad3
    @TripletDad3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Both he and his father were British military officers, so they had problems expressing their feelings for each other. This song was his way of laying everything out there when he thought his dad's death was imminent.
    James Blunt is also very funny and may have prevented World War 3 when he was a captain in the British Army in Kosovo and was ordered to attack the Russian army. He refused the order, and a British General backed him up and told him to stand down.
    Check out the video for No Bravery for a look at his time in Kosovo. For a happy Blunt song, check out Stay the Night. It's a great song.

    This song is about his dad,who was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. With no donor available, his dad wasn't expected to live. After this video a distant cousin came forward, was a match and save Mr Blunt Sr. That's his dad in the final part of the song. Mr Blunt spent 2020 in isolation due to COVID so he wouldn't come in contact with anything that would have put his health at risk.

    • @foots-qt4pk
      @foots-qt4pk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      What really hit me about the story behind this song is that dad had donated a kidney in the past because he has a rare blood type. James wasn't a match when dad's remaining kidney began to fail. But, because of the song, their distant cousin became aware of the issue and got tested. So, in a beautiful way, by writing this song, James really did chase the monsters away.

  • @jonathangoll2918

    Other commenters have given you much of the lowdown. The Blounts - that's how it really should be spelt - are one of the oldest military families in England, going back to at least the fourteenth century. Both James and his father will have been brought up to the traditional English "stiff upper lip", which makes it all the more moving.
    James was a Captain in the British Army, playing quite an important part in the Kosovo Intervention about 1999.

    Brother, you aren’t human if this song doesn’t bring you to tears. This one destroyed me the first time I saw it. I still have my father, but lost my mom to cancer at 11 yo. I wish I had been old enough to find the words to tell her how I felt.
    This song hit me both as a son and parent to three kids knowing they will be facing this one day. One of the most authentic, vulnerable videos I have ever seen. The courage just to sit there and let your emotions flow for the world to experience, especially in our society where men are expected not to show emotion. Such mad respect for James Blunt. Incredible. Nice reaction, and thank you for sharing your story as well. I’m sure your willingness to share helps more people than you realize.

    His Dad allowed James to make this with him so he would have something to keep. He would only do one take with no auto tune. At the finish everyone there was crying and his Dad said, “ I am not dead yet.” James lost it a couple of times in top register but you can’t really cry and hit the notes. His truth was at that time he only had weeks left. Because James wrote and made this song a distant cousin they didn’t know about came forward and he was a match.
    James and his father Charles were both in the military, James was in the same Division as Prince Harry. Listen to some of his earlier songs he is really good and really funny in interviews.

    Anton, I really enjoy your in-depth analysis and commentary on the songs you react to. I saw this video the day before my own father passed last November 24. the day before Thanksgiving. We were all together when he had about 3 days of home hospice. Our relationship had its ups and downs. A couple of years before he was sick, we had grown closer and our family was together as he let go. I marveled at the care of the Hospice and Home Care teams. I don't know how they do what they do but I'm grateful and have enormous respect for them. You asked about another James Blunt "must see" song. I highly recommend "You're Beautiful" - the first song I had head from James. The Official Video - you'll gasp. What a song. Thanks Anton. You're one of the best at this.

    I don't imagine James' refers to his father as "daddy" in person (not judging if he does) - but I do love that he refers to him as daddy in the song. Makes me feel connected - even if it's just in my head lol

    You’re very perceptive and speak a lot of truths. This song came from James’s heart and that was his real father in the video.

    Anton - I have been estranged from my father for many years. After a few years I tried to make a new start with him so he could be a part of his grandchildren's lives (he has not seen his grandson in over 22 years and has never met his grand-daughter ever!!). After 3 months he told me he would be happy to continue the relationship with me but didn't want to spend time with his grandkids. At that point I walked out and have never been back. My brother also has nothing to do with him any more. When my brother was still in contact with him, he asked me if Dad had contacted me to tell me he was writing me out of the will - I told him to save the stamp, I didn't want anything from him and that any anything he left to me would go straight to his grandkids. You chose your friends but not your family. I hope you get something sorted out that works with your Dad.

    Thanks for sharing your introspection about your complicated relationship with your father. We can't choose our family, right?! You should consider reacting to Mike + the Mechanics "Living Years' for more soul-searching and enlightenment 🤗

    This is a true story as his dad had stage 4 caner and James said if he cries,, keep the rolling the tape.. A real tear jerker! Lost both my parents 3 months apart, 9 years ago. Tuffest year of my life as my brother was out of state working. Thank God it was old age and they weren't in pain and they had a living trust made up and I was on everything financial ad we had made cremation arrangements all ready done 6 months before.

    Really interesting to hear your story. This is quite the most emotional song ever. So close to home with me as I lost my dad to covid in March 2020 and watched him die in hospital, holding his arm, etc as he says in this song. . Hits me every time and has the same effect on so many of us.. JB is a great artist.. No Tears is another good track. Wish everyone had as great a relationship with their parents as I was lucky enough to have (I was blessed with mine and miss them and my sister every day)

    Thank you so much for sharing some of your story of growing up with your dad. I can relate. I’m glad the toxic behavior stopped with you for your kids. That shows again what a wonderful person you are. Your story is very powerful the way you explain it and you helped me to understand Nars a little better. I’m sure you’ve helped many. Thank you. God bless you and your family.

    I lost my Dad 13 years ago and think of him daily. He was my best friend, when i lost him i was stationed in Germany, i woke in the middle of the night knowing something bad happened. When i opened my email there it was. My Dad just passed five minutes earlier. The hardest part was telling my daughter, when she broke down i could not keep my military bearing. I felt helpless and couldnt take her pain away.

    Your guess was understandable and normally you would prob be right but youre completely wrong on the podcast speculation. his songs are very emotional and moving but interviewing him you can not get him to be serious. he was obviously very emotional for real in this song but even talking about this in interviews he will not stop making wisecracks. eg. he jokes about telling his dad that if he did die the record sales would go through the roof.

    James Blunt was a soldier who led the 1st troop into Pristina. His early songs were mostly about his Army experiences in the Balkans.

    Awesome reaction. That pet at the end gets me extra emotional. I watched a lot if reactions to this song and it's always a bit of a bummer when reactors stop the video to early. Love James Blunt and been following his career since his first album release. He is great live, too... actually I often prefer his live versions :D His last concert I went to was exactly 2 weeks ago so I'm getting over my Blunty-blues by watching reaction videos. Some suggestions for further JB reactions: No Bravery (version with video footage filmed by James himself and/or from The Bedlam Sessions live at BBC), Unstoppable (find it hilarious how self depricating he is in that one), Courtney's Song... Carrie Fisher (his kid's godmother) tribute, Goodbye my lover, Someone Singing along... there are sooooo many great songs

    Makes me cry every time I hear it. I never had a father, I always wanted one but I wasn’t lucky enough. But I’m a father and grandfather now and hopefully a better person for it and a better father then the one that was never about. James gets a lot of criticism about his music but he can’t half write an excellent song

    Yeah "no bravery" is a must listen from James blunt. Super heavy war song from when he was in the nato peacekeeping force deployed to the balkans to stop a genocide.
