I used to be involved with a certain group making fansubs in the mid 2000s. One of the main reasons for going bananas with the subs was to push it into the legal grey zone. In other words, make it obvious that it's for "educational" purposes, which it actually was for many whom were involved in doing it. This is also why, even after softsub technology was introduced, some groups would still hard-encoded the subs (that and for lack of CPU power to render fancy things). Publishers, especially ADV, used to frequently issue takedowns and sue everyone back then, and no one wanted to deal with that.

As of right now, I only read pirated manga from fan translation groups, and they hold such a special place in my heart. You have the beautiful sniping of manga, where one group translates a chapter or two before the original group translating it could, and the ensuing drama. You have translators admitting that the sentence sounds awkward but that the original Japanese/Korean/Chinese was kinda odd. You have the translators, typesetters and everyone else who worked on it thirsting over a character at the bottom of a panel. It's beautiful.
Maybe one day all of this would be taken away and we'd lose the character and nuance of fan translations altogether. Maybe we won't have memes at the end of the page or characters badly edited to have big butts for laughs. If that day comes, what's the point of even reading manga anymore? Besides the story.

    • @rechtrecht
      @rechtrecht 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I'm late to your comment but I'll reply either way.
I grew up reading my sisters old Manga and they all were special because the Translaters cared more it felt like. They translated pages upon pages of authors note, added fan discussions and art in the end and even put little reactions under the panels.
I recently read the same manga but a new release (Sailor Moon if you care) and was surprised to see none of that! They removed the pages upon pages in which the author talks about receiving bunny earrings and moving for the millionth time.
Fan Translaters groups keep all that. They translate it to the best of their knowledge, with love and care. I love the little TL/Notes they put in or little comments about what they did in life.
It just feels more connected? Fuzzy? Warm

Since fansubs usually were ripping from broadcasts, these little blurbs were usually included. With the advent of legitimate streaming services, these blurbs are no longer present. But, funnily enough, you can see their remnants on some older anime. For instance, if you watch Bleach on Netflix, after the OP plays, there is a brief freeze frame from the episode with a small bit of the OP playing over it, but no text or explanation. That is because that is where the sponsor blurb USED to be, before it was removed for Netflix's broadcasting.

Their in-scene cultural footnotes for anecdotes and Japanese references were instrumental in understanding the context of some scenes. One gag in particular that stands out to me is when Oars Luffy is wandering around Thriller Bark looking for a cannon with child-like glee. Today's subs kinda just directly translates an expression or a word without really making emphasis on the meaning or the origin of them.
Most of us veterans know what we know nowadays thanks to these TNs and don't find the Japanese culture as something mysterious or strange (ex. the rubbing back thingy while taking a shower, the cherry blossom trees, the fireworks festivals and the Yukata clothes, the taking off the shoes, and many more), but newbies might have a tough time trying to understand and adapt to it.
Plus my ability to read subs greatly improved thanks to them. Having to read all that stuff in a short manner of time. Yeet my eyes out.

There’s nothing more satisfying than finding a quality fansub where you genuinely can’t tell if something is a subtitle or not.

The problem is that official subs are a market product that priorities speed, convenience and "professionalism" over quality these days. It's why localization is so rampant and translator notes are a dead concept these days. Nakama generally means "someone one is close with and with whom one does something together". That could be a friend, comrade or crewmate. Normally, like all other instances of the word in other shows, it gets translated based on context, as it should. But because of fansubs, the One Piece fandom sees it as something more special or impactful than it is.

@Mr Blooper If that fits the context of how it's used, then yeah, I suppose. The point is, the word has a bit of a broad meaning in English, so you should pay attention to the circumstances surrounding where it's used when translating. It's not cut and dry. If the meaning of how it's used comes across without literally leaving 'nakama' there like a 2000s gratuitous Japanese fansub, things should be fine.

Senpai is one of those things that are an utter nightmare to translate. As a word, it has a very direct translation, but said english equivalents are practically never used the way senpai is. Imagine someone actually calling someone else "senior" or "upperclassman". You can elect to ignore it, but then sometimes you run into a mess when the show actually decides to make the honorifics plot-relevant. You can just leave it in, but then you alienate the casuals who don't actually know what a senpai is (and if you're dubbing then it also sounds mighty awkward). That's how you end up with TL notes, sometimes they're still the way to go.

But are those fansubs derived from Japanese or English? Because there used to be Dutch fansubs as well but they were a bad translation of awful English fansubs.
Official Dutch subs were also terrible! Most dvd's came from a Belgian company called Kazé. Since Belgium is a bilangual country and because of Benelux, these dvd's came with Dutch subs and could be bought on a company website and be delivered to your home. Kazé was clearly from Wallonia( the French speaking part of Belgium) and the subs were also made by a Walloon whose Dutch was awful!
The subs were horrible with lots of spelling and grammar mistakes! It gave the impression that Dutch subs were an obligation of Federal Belgium language laws to produce the dvd. It was clear that the translator had dropped Dutch as a second language in 8 th grade.
Even if the subs were passable it was because the translator had a good grasp of Dutch and just translated from the French dub...
Even on Netflix , the Dutch subs are usually a translation from a translation in the case for anime. Second-hand translation is what I call it. Most of the time they use English, I even saw one that used French..

I honestly can't tell you if they use the English translation,I know some groups do,but the Italian community has a lot of ppl that understand japanese so sometimes it gets translated from the source,I've rarely seen grammatically incorrect subs though, maybe they weren't the best translation, but without knowing the language you wouldn't notice
Edit:don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that every other language always has a tooth to pick about One Piece English translation,so I'm 90% sure it was done from Japanese
