I appreciate the straight forward approach to this video. I've watched dozens of other ones and just can't follow them because the host is either over the top in personality or they just can't convey the information. I'm only 10 minutes in and Im engaged, not put off and have already learned stuff. Excellent job.
Just finished up my rebiuld of that th400. As soon as I get it all back in the vette, I'll let you know how it does. But I followed your instructions, and I hope it all goes well. But I'll let you know.
Thank you for these videos. Using these to rebuild the TH400 on my big block swapped El Camino. With an upgraded rebuild kit, a few Sonnax parts, and a shift kit, this thing should be be solid.
I had a `67 Impala SS with the early design pan and filter. I read that it was better for racing because the oil would move to the rear of the pan under hard acceleration and the filter pickup was there.

I just bought a TH400 out of a 1984 Chevy Suburban. It has the Integrity Transmission Kooler system Transmission pan with 10 tubes running thru the bottom of the pan. I bought a Regular Filter/Gasket Kit for it and now I am not sure if I should have bought the Filter/Gasket Kit for the Deep Pan (would I get a Longer Pickup tube (or do I need a longer Pickup tube ? ) The TH400 had a regular filter and Pickup tube in it. Afternoon guys I’ve seen a lot of videos on turbo 400 and I must say you guys have it covered 👍 I’m having troubles with my th400 was changing well, then the next time I drove my vehicle it dropped out of 3rd gear. Pulled over and checked vacuum line, seemed ok, so I drove back home slowly. I’ve recently changed modulator, governor gear and checked governor all ok, changed filter and replaced oil. Filled trans and test drive around the block, changes well when trans is cold then once driving for 15min, pull up at traffic lights the trans won’t shift to 2nd gear unless I manually change. Sometimes it will change all 3 gears ? It wont change to 3rd unless I manually change, any thoughts on what this is leaning too Thank you 👍
Great video and breakdown on each step of maintaining the Turbo400. Just what I needed to start my education on the Turbo 400. I have an original older Turbo 400 from a 67 Camaro, but it has a bigger modulator with a threaded looking screw coming out the end and a separate vacuum port. Should I continue to use that style of modulator? Thanks.
I have an TH 400 that was working fine then from shut off tobstart the next day, when I put it in reverse it acted like it was trying to go forward, when I put it in 1st 2nd and third, same thing wanted to go forward but would engage in all slots starts in neutral and park. Fluid was couple quarts low, replaced it and no difference. Have taken from vehicle and pan off had clean no burn fluid, pan had minimal Grey matter no chunks etc. Will I have to rebuild whole trans at this point? Ps shift wire on side was disconnected, valve body was super clean also. Your input would be appreciated if you do such things! GREAT CHANNEL and Most Informative of any I have seen! Thank you and yes I tell my friends about this channel too are you a trans shop also?
I've got some prices on shop rebuilds.Looking like $2000- $3000 including removal & install. If I do it,how much $ would I need to buy all the parts & supplies?
This is truly a great series on these things. I have learned so much! Are there any differences in the parts of a TH425 and a TH400? I'm looking at rebuilding my TH425
Great video! I have a question about the oil pan. I have a Th400 with the old type filter and my pan has started leaking so I’ve ordered a new pan, but it’s without that D shaped groove in the bottom. Will it still fit?
Great video my 78 GMC came with a 454 turbo 400 with the deep Pan with the spacer under the filter did those come with any heavy duty internals straight cut gear's etc?
But, wait!....there's more! ;) Also put together another series on the TH400. It's called "TH400 Build - Additional Info." It's a growing series... I'm afraid I don't understand the question. Can you please clarify? For the meantime, the positive feedback is appreciated. Thanks for dropping us a line, First Generation Garage.
There are a number of ways to tell them apart (oil pan, servos, etc). If you're interested, we can put together a short video on this topic....as time permits.
I have a 1990chevy truck I built a 350 and changed it over to a carburetor it has a 46L60E trans in it and it doesn't change gears because I don't have a computer in it anymore what can I change the transmission to for it to work like it is supposed to
A 700-R4 is almost identical to the 4L60E. But, no PCM needed to operate the trans. Instead, it's controlled by a Throttle Valve and a Governor. The governor is very similar to the TH400 governor. The Throttle Valve is located in the VB (valve-body), and is controlled by the TV Cable, that is attached to the throttle linkage, at the carburetor. Note: Some years of 700-R4 are also known as the 4L60......not to be confused with the 4L60E. At a glance, the early 4L60E and the 700-R4 look identical, from the outside. However, there are some ways to quickly tell them apart. We can put together a video on that topic...as time permits.

When replacing the older TH400 o-ring seal on dipstick, to get it “perfect” is it best to drain the fluid?

Straight-cut planetary gears are typically found in TH400's used in motorhomes, dump trucks, etc.
It was a little sad watching this video. This was quite the journey.
