In the '75 playoffs, the Isles came within one game of pulling reverse sweeps in back to back series. They also went down 3-0 in the series after the Penguins to the Flyers, forced a game 7 only to lose when the desperate Broad Street Bullies pulled the Kate Smith trick out of a hat to win the finale 4-1.
@patrickhamos2987 Not even 1990s quality then, right. How about the original six? Take 26 teams away this season, think how stacked the remaining teams would be. No glaring weaknesses on any team. There were no back up goalies so only 6 NHL goalies were good enough to keep their job. Would be super tough to watch that again.

I was a teenager when the Isles were formed. You are correct in how they struggled, then seemed to appear from nowhere to dominate with a dynasty generated by a frog in Potvin. What a team to face in a do or die situation. My Bruins had it rough against them. Anyway, I played on a team in town that was the second oldest of four in all. I remember after winning our first division championship the fourth team in town being formed, and thinking "are our feats of skill not enough to satisfy the fans?". At the time not understanding the baby boom but I digress. After winning 3 division championships, one league and 3 town championships I know both the feeling of being the upstarts (2nd in town) and wanting to exert dominance from other comers. All props to both sides for their loyalty

Really cool video bro there has been a lot of blood feuds between both teams even as of the early 2000s brawls Bruins fan here and awesome video love the music at the end it's funny the ranger fans could not run the Islanders out of New York but Boston ran Hartford right out of Connecticut 😂 also I would like to say that Esposito is a class act and the only reason why I think he would flip the fans off is because even the general manager got upset about that it's hockey
@@wrxspeed2018 Hartford had to pay FOUR teams the indemnity fee (to Boston,NYI,NYR and New Jersey). How were they gonna survive? They're missed, that's for sure. At least they're doing well in Carolina- and able to get to the second round every year...oops,too soon? My bad
Isles/nyr is a good rivalry but not like it used to be thanks to bettman. Too many changes to the playoff format and no playoff meetings since '94. The last six meetings saw the winner go to the finals and four times win the cup. Not the same since isle dynasty died. isles/nyr only played 3 times two seasons ago and was over a year between games. Flames/oil is a heated rivalry who last met in playoffs in '22. Habs/nords was the fiercest rivalry of all. Bettman extinguished that rivalry in '95. Also killed whale/b's as well to put whale in fkn nc. whale/nords were sacrificed for 'cost certainty' and cap thanks to bettman.
It's also that Bettman is too busy marketing other rivalries, like Penguins-Flyers,Penguins-Capitals or Blackhawks-Blues. According to him, these are the only rivalries that have ever existed in the history of the NHL. That said, Rangers-Islanders,as a rivalry, has also experienced bad luck,in that they haven't faced each other in the playoffs since 1994. Since then,it's always been either the Islanders being good and the Rangers being bad,or the Rangers being good and the Islanders being bad,or both being bad at the same time. A rivalry like this is slept on outside of the New York/Long Island area. It's one of those that would definitely grow the game, because there's enough of everything to go around. Hell,it would probably turn casual fans into fans of either team (but mostly it would grow the Islanders' fan base, being that the Rangers are the "Nickelback" of hockey teams, lol)
I also hated seeing the Whalers go (being a Montreal Canadiens fan,I shouldn't,but I miss them and the Nordiques),but I think a huge part of why they left was having to pay the Bruins, Islanders,Rangers, and Devils to exist in Hartford
So I get you're an Isles fan, but you overlooked a big rivalry when bringing up the different ones... Blues-Blackhawks has always been one of the best rivalries in NHL outside of Boston-Toronto, New York-Boston, and the Pennsylvania rivalry of Pittsburgh-Philadelphia With that said, the battle of New York supremacy is still a good rivalry, even though both teams have been either really bad or just good enough for Playoffs since 1994
I agree, and I think I could be swayed depending on the day on what the actual "biggest" Rivalry is... But...for this video, I tried to argue the point, that prior to the 90s and the Islanders becoming a laughing stock. There were not many rivalries that could match Islanders-Rangers. From the numerous playoff series showcased in the video, to the build up of wanting to legitimately embarrass each other, plus the overall location and distance of the Rivalry. I think there's a strong case that had there been more Islanders-Rangers playoff series past '94, people nowadays would look at the Islanders-Rangers as one of the biggest in the sport. I figure everyone will have a different opinion on it, just felt like a making an argument in the video to amplify why the "Double Chili" night signaled a HUGE turning point heading into the 80s for this rivalry and hockey as a whole.
@earboysport I personally as a Rangers fan (Blues are my #1, but I've also become a fan of Pittsburgh and the Rangers) feel like the best days of the rivalry were mentioned in your video for sure... The point was to bring attention to this great, underrated rivalry, especially because Penguins-Flyers and Blues-Blackhawks are marketed to death by the NHL. I'm a Canadiens fan,and while our rivalries over the years with Boston, Toronto,Quebec and Ottawa are brutal affairs, I'm also a NYC native and Long Island resident. There's no shortage of fights on the Long Island Railroad out of Penn Station when the teams play at MSG (the L.I.R.R. is the commuter train that serves the Island, and Penn Station is right under MSG ). It's definitely quite a rivalry, regardless of how both teams are doing, and it's very personal for both sets of fans. It's one that,if the rest of North America saw more often, would have even casual fans hooked,as there's something for everyone. It's only a shame they haven't faced each other in the playoffs in so long
