    And the crazy thing about those CC starts on 3 days rest? The manager didn't ask him to do it. The other players didn't ask him to do it. His agents sure as hell didn't ask him to do it. He asked the manager if he could. As a Brewers fan, that man quite literally carried us into the postseason singlehandedly.
    Also fun fact: that comp pick the Angels got from the Yankees? It was originally supposed to go to the Brewers, however as Teixeria was the only type A free agent ranked higher than Sabathia, it went to the Angels instead. Both former Brewers gm Doug Melvin and assistant gm Gord Ash have since said that Mike Trout was very high on their list and had they had they had the 25th pick, they would've taken Trout if here were available.

    The Rich Harden trade could’ve been so much better for the Cubs if Lou Piniella had started him in Game 1 against the Dodgers in 2008 when he literally had the most rest of any Cubs starting pitcher going into the playoffs. Instead, he started Ryan Dempster, who went on to walk 7 Dodgers hitters, allow a grand slam to James Fucking Loney, and couldn’t make it through 5 innings after being one of the best starting pitchers in baseball during the regular season. Also, while it did suck seeing Josh Donaldson turn into a borderline HOFer, the Cubs did feel like they were dealing from a position of strength at that time. Donaldson was still a catcher at that time and the Cubs catcher that season, Geovany Soto, was the NL Rookie of the Year. Sadly, he was never the same player as he was in 2008 beyond 2008.

    • @matthewhallberg8256
      @matthewhallberg8256 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The Cubs were tanking right in the middle of Donaldson's peak, so he likely would have gone elsewhere or been a good player on a bad team. But more importantly, if Donaldson is still around, do we draft Kris Bryant in 2013?

    • @PrazMaster
      @PrazMaster 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matthewhallberg8256Good point. Hell, if Donaldson is still around, does Hendry still get fired in 2011, leading to Theo being brought over and turning the franchise around? JH probably still goes, but it may have been a different hire with the farm in better shape than it was at the time.

    • @SmoothCriminal12
      @SmoothCriminal12 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Piniella also fumbled the pitching in 07 as well. In Game 1 versus Arizona. He pulled Zambrano after six when he was dealing and the Cubs immediately blew the game. Claimed he was saving him for a potential game 4, which never came to be as they were swept...

  • @smolitj
    @smolitj 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I think people underestimate how much the CC Trade changed the culture is Milwaukee for years to come, while the Brewers missed the playoffs in 2009 and 2010 the 2008 team layed the framework for the 2011 NLCS team and make the front office confident that the Brewers were always just a step away. If CC never comes to Milwaukee in the first place, Ryan Braun might not sign the huge extension he did. That extension prevented the Brewers from totally rebuilding. If the Brewers just rebuilt with their Prospects that never panned out then maybe they never trade for Yelich to complement a very underrated bat in 2018-2020 Ryan Braun. Yelich has publicly stated that Braun was a good influence during his MVP caliber seasons in 2018 & 19. Yelich is still an amazing bat to this day. I don’t know, just something to think about.

    I will never forget the 2008 deadline. I was 11 and at sleepaway camp on cape cod. we didn't have access to the internet or outside media. We were at an all-camp assembly (not related to baseball) when our camp directors broke the news of the Manny trade to the mostly Red Sox fan campers. We were all stunned, having grown up watching Manny, and had no idea who jason bay was.

    Since it wasn't mentioned in the video (because it's not really relevant lol), in 2008, CC Sabathia separately led both the AL and the NL in complete games -- he's bolded on both rows of his BBRef page. I'm not sure how many players have led both leagues in any stat, let alone CGs.

    • @jasonb809
      @jasonb809 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He led both leagues in complete game **shutouts**, but he didn't lead the AL in complete games. He occupies the strange place in history of actually leading the majors in CG's that season but not leading the American League. Roy Halladay had more CG's purely in the American League (9) while Sabathia had 3 in the AL and 7 in the NL.
      what an amazing year

    Everyone rips on the Dodgers these days for buying up players and being "Yankees west" but people forget that during the 90s and up to 2008, the Dodgers only had 2 wild cards in 96 and 06 and 2 division titles in 95 and 04 and were constantly buying past their prime veterans. That trade for Manny in 08 was the first time in my life I felt like the team was actually trying to win the World Series

    The thing about Sabathia's season with Cleveland in 2008 is that his first four starts he allowed 27ER in 18 IP for a 13.50 ERA, but he had a 2.16 ERA in 104 IP in the subsequent 14 starts before being traded. I'm pretty certain anyone in baseball looking for a starter would have been aware of how badly the start to the season had skewed his numbers, and that he had pitched like the ace that he was in the 2.5+ months since. No one needed to "buy low" on him.

    Video idea: worst deadline fire sales ever. Fire sales that ended up not giving the selling team much in return in the following years after the fire sale. 2018 Orioles comes to mind with just one guy, Dean Kremer, being a regular piece or even still being with the Orioles since that deadline.

    The whole carlos santana killing ranked mode this year was so overblown. The santana boost was live for about a month. Then season 2 came out and it was immediately forgotten. No one uses his boost anymore to this day because there are better boosts if you want to go that route. Corbin Carroll boost in season 2 is insane with all the extremely high power/ high speed players they released during the all star break and beyond. Santana's boost was never even anything special, you had to field an entire team of switch hitters (which on average are worse offensively than pure righty or pure lefty hitters) just to get +10 contact on players who already had almost maxed contact. You saw it during the last 3-4 weeks of season 1 only, because before that last drop of cards, there simply wasn't enough good switch hitters to make the boost even worth using.

    Fun fact: that year the Pirates almost had a deal to trade Jason Bay to the Rays. In return they would receive SP Jeff Niemman and SS Reid Brignac. However Pittsburgh supposedly wanted more possibly top prospects like Jeremy Hellickson or David Price.

    The irony of the deadline was the Phillies won the WS and the Phils had one of the most confounding non-deadlines for a competitor ever. They "addressed" their 3 biggest needs... but the players they got screamed "6th Option"
    The biggest issue was by far the rotation. It was Hamels and Moyer dragging 3 different 5.50 ERA rocks... so they naturally went and got....
    -- A 4.96 ERA, -0.2 WAR Joe Blanton???
    That was the watershed move.
    The other two needs were LHP bullpen depth and a bench bat.
    To address that... they got...
    -- A 36yo, 7.15 ERA, -0.3 WAR in Scott Eyre for the pen
    -- A 40yo, 98 OPS+, -0.4 WAR in Matt Stairs for the bench
    Yet, all 3 showed up and delivered well beyond expected role.
    Better yet, all 3 of those guys had another year on their contract and stayed productive in 2009 too... wild man...

    I watch your content quite a bit. You do phenomenal work. But I gotta say, something about "ladies and gentlemen, and everyone in between" in your outtro gives me an amount of comfort that maybe the world isn't as shit as I think it to be, always. Sorry to get sappy, I just didn't think I'd be this bitter with people at age 36, and with how casually you said that, almost like that sort of tolerance should just be expected of us... that means a lot. Thanks for that.

    Carlos Delgado may be "criminally underrated", but he isn't even the most underrated Blue Jays first baseman. That honor goes to John Olerud and his 57.3 career fWAR (6.3 better than first-ballot Hall-of-Famer David Ortiz, and 13.2 more than Delgado himself)

    Ahhhh yes. What a year to be a dodgers fan. I almost forget how bad things were as a dodgers fan during my childhood and teen years. 😊almost.

    Over 15 years later and I’m still upset the Mets didn’t trade for a reliever to replace Wagner at the deadline
