Anyone can spend a lot of money to achieve good results, but it is far more interesting to see it being done at a low cost. I love the word "frugal". It so much nicer than being called "cheap-ass", like people say about me.
Bob Ross. You can possibly restore dashes to better than OEM - some weren't very quality. The dashes from Just Dashes are nice but very spendy. You could make a vacuum forming box and do a amateur version of what JD does. I think the vacuum technique would work best on dashes with no sharp bends - like most of them.
Give you a lot of credit for having the patience to spend sanding, shaping and finishing the Plymouth’s dash. You are a talented auto body man and mechanic who knows what’s he is doing. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to explain the process to your viewers. Looking forward to the next one!
Hey brother I've been watching your videos for awhile and the amount of knowledge I've absorbed is unreal...I'm doing some cosmetic stuff on my truck and I swear I hear your voice in my ear about patience etc...keep up the awesome work and GOD bless
I give 50/50 odds it's all going to be ok. Lol. The good news is, it kept my 88 year old dad mesmerized the whole time. He loves your video's and even better, I can play them over and over because he forgets everything by the next day!!! God bless the Weird Beard Elder Care Channel!!!
Couple tips on the foam can , some of those cans are made to spray upside-down , pays to check cuz you'll run out of air ! The other tip is , if you use half a can or what ever and then leave it and try to use it later & it's plugged you can takes the spay assembly off and spray carburetor cleaner through it and that old foam will disappear like magic! You can also spray it down the exit tip on the can !
if he ended up doing vinyl.. was it necessary to go through all the filler wrk, could it been done with the carved and formed foam repair? just throwing it out there
Great 👍🏻 Stuff as always 🤠 Electric 💡 Lights, Heater, 120 plug -ins all on separate 20 amp breakers. If your Air Compressor is 120 or 240 volt. Separate breakers are a must do.
I love your low budget approach to this rebuild. It's all been really clever hacks that don't seem like they'd work, but turn out amazing. Keep up the great content dude!
I've been wrenching a long time and believe it or not this is the first I've seen this done, thanks for taking me to school weird beard I'll be doing this on my power wagon.
Great effort and result with the tools and mats used mate. I'm new here and got a Bob Ross of the motor world vibe from you big time, subbed and thanks.
I’ve been here since your first day Mike and your style is top notch. I like that you show the process in real time, not hopping over or around the imperfections that you encounter. I never would have thought of the Bob Ross comparison, but dude, that fits you to a T. Can’t wait for part 3. 👍👍x💯
The years you spent in the boat industry paid off, doing fiberglass repairs on boats is way different from auto body repairs, you have integrated both for this repair. Beautiful work on a budget, keep up the great videos and craftsmanship
Take your time I was wondering how you were going to fix that step by step is the absolutely the best way! Looking forward to the next one! Its going to look so nice!
Don't apologize for your content. You do an amazing job describing the steps and showing those of us that don't know, the correct process of how it's done. Like you said in the video, you are the Bob Ross of auto repair and that is why I keep coming back. Keep up the excellent work!
First time viewer. You had said a couple of words earlier in your video that reminded me of Bob Ross. Low and behold several minutes later you said others called you the Bob Ross of car repair @27:36. You are a great teacher with a gentle heart. Keep up what you doing! Lord's blessings to you.
I'm one of the one's that likes to follow along during the process! You are a Genius!!! I NEVER thought you would be able to make that dash look like it did when it was new! I thought those cracks and breaks would all but do it in! I probably would have ripped it out and tossed it away and looked for a better one out of a junkyard car! Love following along and watching this boulevard cruiser coming back to life!! Keep going!!!!
I really like your format of how you do these videos. It's like we are all hanging out with you while you work. I'm not that mechanically inclined to but I do have some knowledge and I miss working on cars with my dad he was the mechanic in the family. Looking forward to the next one.
You made an incredible recovery, I would never have thought of a job like this. Bravo. I personally would cover it with vinyl skin to hide any cracks that may form over time.
Really Loving these videos, a suggestion for the screw holes in the dash drill a small hole from the back side to figure the angle and then hit it up from the top with a step drill bit to get the cone shape. Again love this video series and as always stay safe and wish the misses a good recovery.
Definitely will be going this route at the cost it is to get a new dashboard for all of my old card this video was right on time appreciate you keep it coming nice
I would never have the patience you have.......Great job......very interesting!!! :).......kinda looks like mudding up drywall......which I have done a lot of.....
The Bondo brand balls up and loads your paper if its not thoroughly hard. If you get that, lightly scratch it up with 36,give it 10 minutes. It allows it to breath and set up.
Thanks for showing another way of fixing that rough dash. Sprayway customs has videos of fixing dashes with fiberglass resin and fleece fabric. He does good work too. Keep the awesome vids coming. Can't wait to see the car done.
I did a dash on a LTD. My approach was a little differant but it is always great to see other examples like yours. I struggled to find any examples of how to go about it when I started. Keep up the good work.
God bless you man. Been following you on this project and you are doing good. I watched Bob Ross during a period when I was off work ill. He was so relaxing and inspirational. I would go so far as to say, Therapeutic. Stay safe and keep these video's rolling man!!!
Most usually when I see lights flicker like yours were, it has turned out to be a loose neutral wire either at the pole or in the breaker box. It would be pretty quick to check and might save a lot of headaches. Love the channel!
Awesome job! i did use the spray foam in my room to fill the gap but after watching ur video here i am convinced thanks for this meticulous job you did.❤️🔥💐🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏🏻
That guy from AAR wouldn’t have the first fuckin clue how to fix that dash. This is the kind of craftsmanship that is actually worth something. Props to you, brother. Keep it up.
😂 Brass Bear I was thinking the same exact thing man! Between him moving more than a band of gypsies and buying a freakin new car every other month I had to cut bait.
So glad Mike cut ties with that loser. I havent watched a video from him in almost a year and I don't miss it at all. His head go too big, too quick, and then he started hanging out with TK and it made things even worse. Mike was going out of his way to help AAR and Randy shit on him. Good riddance, pal!
That's come out absolutely brilliantly Mike. Great to know what can be done with a lot of patience and perseverance, not to mention a whole pile of talent. I'm looking forward to seeing how you tackle the vinyl. Some steep curves ahead.😁
Wow! you make a real head ache of a dash board into epic art / reconstruction. Fun to see the transformation. Can’t wait to see the end result. Your Positivity is contagious.
I love how you experiment and save us all from doing sketchy things that we have no idea may or may not work. I'm thinking maybe try a hot knife of some sort and see how it works out.
My dad was a traditional coach painter. His finishing filler was fine line chalk mixed with primer paint. It took a while to dry but wet-n-dry used wet did a superb job.
Lots of work making the dash look good again. Looking awesome. Cant wait to see finished product. Keep up good videos. Never to long man .. hopefully you can get electricity figured out. Bet that drives you crazy.
The best channel on TH-cam.Your skills are amazing.I hope your wife is recovering well from her recent surgery.Best wishes to you both from Dublin Ireland.
Awesome work....the great thing about the vinyl is that you can still recolor it down the road if you want it to be green again. SEM products work great!
Unbelievable!! Grate job!! You have shown me how to reduce my 1974 TR 4 dash. Instead of trying to find one. Which is probably impossible.. 👍👍 Dave from Arizona..
I would never ever consider fast forwarding watching these vids by this master. There's Mr. Norm Abrams Master Carpenter of This Old House, Mr. Bob Ross Master Painter of The Joy of Painting, then there's Mr. Mike Baird Master Extraordinaire Car Guru of Weird Beard. Immensely enjoy the content, Thank you.
I will bet that 95% of the people would have tossed that dash in the dumpster. That was one cracked up piece of scat. However, after watching your channel for a good while, I learned to never doubt you. You get a gold star for this one!🌟
Great stuff man. I love the fact it isn't like so many TH-cam vids showing no labor or thought and Poofff!!! It;s done. It just falls together practically on it's own. Thank you. Also thanks for putting the skirts on the Big Boned Gal. Looks good. I have a 2 door 69 Fury III. Big Boned Gals Rule Lol.
I love your attitude towards your projects and the fact that you put in the sweat equity to get the results rather than throwing money at it. All the best from Scotland
Very interesting information. Thanks for the video. Good job on the repair. Bondo tip: If you mix in a little fiberglass resin, it prolongs the working time and makes it spread like butter. Works on fiberglass filler too.
I was about to say about the vynil. Most of these dash rebuilds I have seen people glue vynil on top. I assume a bunch of 3m super 44 and a heat gun you got a brand new dash. I want to do the same thing with my old Merc.
You are a BEAST! If there was a such things as The TH-cam Awards, you’d clean house in the car category! I’m waiting for you to just build a whole car from scraps and trees around your place! 😂

Awesome video Mike. Love the work you do you are very awesome and take alot of pride in your work. I feel you have the best channel around. Keep the videos coming and love the mopars
Another great video. The results so far are fantastic considering the condition of the dash before the process of repair. Can't wait to see how It turns out once It has been covered. A master at work. Great job Mike. Lawrence from Heathrow London.
Cool that ur going the Vinyl route. I watched "Clunkers and Classics" do that to his 72 Nova dash a few weeks ago. If your Vinyl came folded you should definitely heat it or iron it under a bath towel to get any creases out before gluing it down. Would suck to go through all that work then you have an ugly crease in the final product.
Very interesting video. I didn't know how you were going to rebuild that dash - looks like its going to be a great result. Very keen to see the next steps.
I like the long videos. As I've never done this sort of stuff before. And I like learning from people who are awesome at it, so long videos aren't boring to me. You are the Sensei, I am the Student. Thank you for your hard work, man. 😀🤟

You can possibly restore dashes to better than OEM - some weren't very quality. The dashes from Just Dashes are nice but very spendy. You could make a vacuum forming box and do a amateur version of what JD does. I think the vacuum technique would work best on dashes with no sharp bends - like most of them.

I had doubts about this approach but I have to say I’m blown away with how well that looks, can’t wait to see it with the vinyl!
You are right, you are a sculptor. It is so beautiful to watch someone with so much skill. Love your vids Mr. Beard.
