The guitar tone of this performance is very unique. He was definitely using some sort of boost pedal cause he was getting the perfect overdriven/clean tone while not using distortion

He did that a lot and it always sounds so damn good. I always thought if he lived he certainly would have went in a direction that we saw on unplugged. I think he would have excelled at that even more than he did the heavy stuff. We have all missed out on so much great music. Very sad.

You wouldn't want to auto-tune this -- you simply don't auto-tune grunge. But on another note, Kurt's voice was not amazing; he had horrible technique, and he knew it. It was perfect for his needs, but closer to the end he'd been warned again and again that he'd destroy his vocal if he kept on the way he did.
