    I just loved Rob Paulsen strangling Bennett over his Evangelion review.

      im loving these cameos/crossovers. It helps raise awareness of more little know anime youtube channels while also bringing in more varied content on his channel.

      I agree. It's as if the Sage knew, somewhere inside of himself, that his opinion on Evangelion is wrong... :-)

    • @kuro_neko5863
      @kuro_neko5863 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's not so much his opinion is wrong, it's just that regardless on whether or not one likes Eva, one must acknowledge that it is good, and had a huge positive impact on the anime scene. This is why I can accept, if not agree with, Sage's stance on Eva, as opposed to say JO's negative Eva review or many others in the same vein. He doesn't like it, and he's entitled to his opinion. And lets not kid ourselves, Eva does have its flaws. Personally Eva is easily in my top ten anime of all time, maybe even my top five. But not everyone is going to see it that way, and that's fine.

    • @Asehpe
      @Asehpe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Kuro_Neko (is this a Kodomo-no-Jikan reference? :-) you make a good point here, and one I don't disagree with. But consider this: if you claim that one "must" acknowledge that NGE is good and had a huge positive impact, aren't you also limiting their opinions? JesuOtaku is indeed wrong about EVA (as she herself kinda acknowledged by changing some of her criticism of it in a later video), but from a detached perspective, her opinion is as 'acceptable' as Ben's, because it is equally sincere: she's reacting from her guts, and talking about what she felt (just look at her criticism of the Freudian life philosophy NGE throws at you in Ep. 25). And I find that valid, too.
      That's independent, to me, from being right or wrong, which ultimately depends on whether or not you are consistent with the set of criteria that you support. The problem is, most TH-cam critics don't really state clearly what their criteria are... they state their biases (Ben is clear about his anti-moe bias), but not really their criteria. We're left to deduce them from their videos. Ben, for instance, is very strong on plot and character consistency and internal logics: things have to 'make sense'.
      I think Ben is wrong, because in his NGE review he isn't consistent with his own criteria, as I understand them (he ends up saying that he can't put up with a main character who can't escape his own demons enough to get into the fucking robot and save the world, which clearly overrides his personal problems, right? -- thereby missing the strongest and most interesting point of said character and his animē... which, frankly, is emotional, not logical, criticism.) Not that NGE doesn't have flaws -- but frankly, so does Macross Plus, and Ben won't discuss (nor, I think, even notice) them. JesuOtaku is also wrong for a similar reason: she is so angry at the "relativist" message ('you have to find your truth', 'all truths are equivalent', blah blah blah) that she basically overlooks everything else...
      But I can accept both Ben's and JO's opinions -- because, as I said, they are sincere, they come from their hearts. And I respect that. Just as I respect my right to think that they are wrong. :-)

    • @kuro_neko5863

      @Asehpe Not a Kodomo-no-Jikan reference, I've been using this nick since the 90's. To the rest: why I consider Sage's negative Eva review more valid than JO's is Sage made it clear it was a matter of his opinion and feelings about the series, that is to say a subjective view. JO attempted to prove it was objectively bad by quoting a bunch of psychological, philosophical, and theological sources that I felt she wasn't really qualified to be using the way she was attempting to use them. And even if she was qualified, Eva isn't some factual treatise on those subjects, but a work of fictional entertainment. Basically she was trying to justify her emotional response as the only correct response, rather than providing her opinion and reasoning and letting us make up our own minds.

      As much as I love Basil Pouledoris, I would have to say that for me personally, Jerry Goldsmith is the greatest film composer of all time. The man wasnt afraid to experiment with different techniques in his compositions and because of this, he made some of the best film scores of all time. I wouldn't be surprised if Yoko Kanno took inspiration from him. Her scores for Macross Plus and Macross Frontier sound very similar to a Jerry Goldsmith composition, with a touch of John Williams.

    I feel for the point of the ending to this video so much. I really want to see less moe and more artful anime that focuses on themes of humanity instead of shallow badassery and sex appeal to sell itself. I love Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, Death Parade, Trigun, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and the works of Masaaki Yuasa, and I hate how I have to hunt through a lot of mediocre trash to find these. But I guess that's part of thrill of searching.

    Mate, you just encountered what Gigguk calls "The void". That is an anime so good and so well made that connects with you so much, it makes other anime seem like crap. It's the turning point for every anime fan.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It already be over praised, but for me "the void" or "the turning point" was Death Note. Death Note was one of the few shows that I've ever seen that I actually had to ration the episodes out, otherwise I'd have blown through the entire series in a night. I've had an easier time rationing out morphine to myself.

    I have a strange history with Macross Plus. I remember watching bits and pieces of it a while back on syfy's ani-monday, so I assumed that I had seen it more than once, but I didn't. Thankfully, I had the chance to watch it at my local theater last night and I loved it. It's for sure different when compared to Do You Remember Love, but I'm sure that was done on purpose. MP delivers the goods in more ways than one, but at the end of the day, it's the kind of anime that can be enjoyed with the sound on or off, and very few are capable of doing that. I've seen a lot of anime at the theater, but seeing Macross Plus in such a way was special, and it left me wanting to own a copy of the movie. I'm glad that you covered Macross Plus because it pretty much reinforced what I thought of it, and I can relate to the idea that it's sometimes hard to discuss the things that you love.

    Macross Plus maybe one of the greatest OVA ever made but lets be real here if you ask 20 to 50 US adults in a room that not a die hard fan of anime or any Japanese cartoons and ask them how many here had ever seen or even knew about Macross Plus or Macross Series in general I'll bet none of them would know and say "Huh-What" but if you ask that same adults on who here had ever seen or know about VOLTRON almost half or all will raise their hands and that Sage is a crying shame.

    There is a tragedy to the fact that he signals Stein's Gate and Baccano as "below the bar" for classics in the early 2000s. Imagine how he would have reacted to how things are now. Just gotta say, I'm glad Made in Abyss exists.

    I saw this back in 97 when Teletoon first started up and learned what it was. For the first Month on Friday and Saturday they have a late night anime movies. Ninja a scroll was first to play and then Patlabor 1&2 the Macros plus. They would cycle thru everything but then never played the final part of macross till a year later. I've still seen earlier shows like Saber Rider back when GI Joe first start up then in later years Samurai Pizza Cats then Sailor Moon

    Didn't see this when it originally aired, so I'll add my thoughts here. Macross Plus is when I started falling off the anime bandwagon. It wasn't bad by any stretch, but you could see the great movie it could have been instead of the mediocre we got.
    I remember how the hotshot Maverick gets assigned planetside and it isn't until much later in the film that he acknowledges its his hometown. Or that all three members of this 'love' triangle at first act like strangers, then act like they were former best friends and then act like they have grudges to settle. Unlike Bebop or Champloo where the prior backstory was already decided on, in Macross Plus it came up whenever the story needed to pump up the drama.
    And it wasted the easiest lay up storywise. If Iceman's jet is patterned after his brain waves, have the JET go after Maverick escalating the havoc as Maverick avoids and dodges each threat.. Proto-Hatsume Riku is ridiculous and too left field for this kind of world-ending mayhem. A predator drone going all Skynet is an easier leap than your ipod shuffle going full blown Ultron over your breakup playlist.

    I admit, I had a similar experience when it came to me not watching anime. After TTGL and Gilgamesh I was pretty much done with anime because I didn't think anything could really compare to them. Even to this day I don't watch anime like I did 10 or so years ago outside of Jojo and Digimon and the odd anime title here and there.
    That being said I do agree that a lot of the anime aesthetic doesn't really attract me either.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand that, but there are still good anime from time to time. TTGL is great but not that great, and Gilgamesh is straight pretentious. I admit it has great visuals but everything else fall flat. I think you could check Madoka Magica and Stains Gate. There is also few other, but I don't want overburden you.
      Edit:
      Though there is also a thing like stylistic void.. anime style shift from time to time and some shows are pick examples of it so when new style kick in, nothing new can compete. Gilgamesh is more a pick example of end of "Evangelion era" (though Rah Xephon is real pick of that). And Gurren Lagann is commonly considered as end of Super Robot nostalgia so that may be the case. Current Age of Moe was end of anime for many fans, but still there are good shows from time to time.

    • @RippahRooJizah
      @RippahRooJizah 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair I saw TTGL around when it first came out. And, hey, I really did like Gilgamesh (terrible fight scenes, though). I really enjoyed the interactions and plot.
      Also I slightly misworded something. I meant to say a lot of the *newer* anime aesthetic doesn't attract me.
      I'm not saying there are no good shows from time to time nowadays. As I said, I watched Jojo and Digimon (although Appmon was very... okay). I also watched Samurai Flamenco and One Punch Man. I plan to eventually watch My Hero Acadamia at some point.
      In any case nowadays I'm just really picky about what I do watch. And I don't quite have as much free time as I did 10 or so years ago, so there's that.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, thanks for clarifications then. As for Gilgamesh I also did like it when it originally come out, but in long run this anime was so disappointing that I can't count it as good. On the other hand RahXephon is basically a ideal "Evangelion". It most of all have a sense, what is usually greatest flaw of NGE and its clones like Gilgamesh (what is magical boys but it use many similar elements so it count). And before someone say something.. I know the plot of NGE, what I can't say about many fanboys mesmerized just by visuals.

    • @RippahRooJizah
      @RippahRooJizah 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never watched Eva outside of part of the first episode many years ago (no reason I didn't continue, really).
      RahXephon... I feel like I've seen part of it years ago but I don't know. The name sounds familiar.
      As an aside, there was an anime I saw a while back that I can't remember the name of. It was a rather... environmentally friendly anime where this girl was with this guy with powers or something... Not saying it was a good anime but I do kinda want to look over it again at some point. Have any idea of what I'm talking about?
      It was a modern era anime. I can't remember if i was a short series or a movie. It was one of those anime that talked about being environmentally minded and was kinda pretentious. Probably made somewhere between 2000 and 2007. Had an english dub.

    Bennet, I think you’re forgetting just how exceptional all of these series you mention are. These stand the test of time because they stand out above everything else. They are extremely rare. And even then they came about through everything aligning together to make it near perfect or perfect. Something you eluded to with regards to Macross Plus. These are also rare.
    Plus it’s different times. Nostalgia and fan service are all the rage. It’s the thing fans are drawn to first and foremost above all. Everything else is secondary. Politics and social commentary is also important, more than it has ever been. It’s not to say there is no substance to modern anime, it just what one considers to be substance.
    I agree there isn’t anything that can be sized up to some of the classics we grew up with, but we’re not seeing it from the eyes of the youth. What matters to them isn’t the same as what matters to us. Plus when we constantly compare the stories of today to the stories of yesterday, they’ll either try to make it like those, only to fall short, or not bother at all knowing it will fall short. It’s one hung to remind next generations of the greats of the past, it’s another to beat it over their heads constantly. Let them find their way and guide them when we can. And let’s not shit on the new stuff too much. That just only makes the next generations double down on it. Much like how you yourself, Sage, have your dumpster fires and guilty pleasures you enjoy. Let them have theirs. In the end just ask them to figure out for themselves “Can it be better?” and hopefully they’ll say yes.

    I don't get it, I really like the composer's music, but this movie did not provide me with any enjoyment as far as I can remember, probably because the story seemed so slow and pointless. I remember liking Macross II a lot more than this film. Maybe I was spoiled by more action oriented mecha anime like Gundam 0083 and such, loved those.

    Sure, Macross Plus is _good,_ but it's NO Angel Cop... 50% of that comment is technically true. Glad I bought the DVD before it got taken down off whichever stream service it used to be on in 2013 and put on to whichever one it's on now. The future sucks.

    Sage... you're just pretentious.
    And I say it with the utmost respect. I love your show, and I find your opinions not only entertaining (you clearly put a lot of effort into making them entertaining, and it pays), but often quite insightful and deep. You're, like, a lit graduate who pretends he's just one of the common guys: profanity, obscene gestures, but, at the same time, a huge amount of care for detail, for metaphor, for Art. And I respect you for that.
    But gee... Do you really have to be another one of those guys saying "what I liked best was indeed not just what I liked best, it was the Golden Age. Never before, and never again since, has there been so much really well done stuff. Ah me miserum, homines erant in illo tempore qui hodie non sunt... Nunc videmus per speculum et in aenigmate... Tempus fugit..."?
    Judging by the number of 'Golden Age' anime you utterly destroy in your show, I'd say the shit-to-gold ratio is the same today as it was in the times of Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, and Ghost in the Shell: a few priceless jewels, and a metric shit-ton of "Garzey's Wings".
    Really, if you can't appreciate Steins;gate as nothing more than a "fine show", and you keep repeating the banana scene because it looks funny... Then you sound like the guys who can't appreciate Cowboy Bebop because "the art style is not like today". Those people would probably select some scene in which Spike's face is deformed to show some emotion (anger, shame, interest...) and suggest you laugh at it the way you suggest we should laugh at the banana scene in Steins;gate.
    Man!... I get it. You're like Harold Bloom: there is The Canon (tm), and everything else is either derivative or not worthy of attention ("fine shows"). I'm not against that in principle: there are things (like classical music) where I am like that. But... you gotta acknowledge this.
    There are people who get enjoyment -- and I mean Enjoyment with capital E, with all the artistic value you see in Macross -- from Steins;gate, or Death Note, or Mushishi, or Madoka Magica, or Monogatari, or Psycho-Pass. Akiyuki Shinbō is to some, in his own way, as good as Watanabe,. Makoto Shinkai as good as Hiyao Miyazaki, Gen Urobuchi as good as Yushihiro Imagawa or Shirō Masamune. Even if you don't like them, and want to argue against them (and I'd love to hear your arguments), there is no denying that some people (me included) have derived from their work the same kind of enjoyment that you clearly derive from Macross. And that deserves respect.
    You're just an elitist. You got your favorite style, and that's it. Like peope who say music has never done anything better than jazz or blues. Which is OK, in itself. Please enjoy what you enjoy. But please... don't tell me that the "new stuff" is just "fine shows". They're damn fine shows (if you allow me to paraphrase Malcom Reynolds), they're wonderfully deep shows to which one can always go back again and again for more -- and find it there.
    Animē isn't dead, or past its prime. It's just changed, evolved, like everything else.

      "Mushishi = overrated scenery porn
      Madoka Magica = Evangelion ripoff #39421374
      Psycho-Pass = Piss-Poor ripoff of Ghost In The Shell...Innocence... :("
      Are you even serious? You need to be troll.. aren't you? Especially because nothing from your "superior elite" aren't that special on the first place. Even if I agree with your opinion about Mushishi, it is still only a opinion. Objectively there is nothing wrong with it, and that it doesn't fit your "elitist" taste isn't argument. Madoka Magica and Evangelion? Are you one of those Evangelion fanboys who think that Ideon was its ripoff, not the other way around? Because Evangelion was incoherent mess, yes with good visuals.. but nothing special for anyone who really know the anime. Magoka Magica has tight plot what has literally nothing to do with NGE.. but you would need to be capable to understand it first, not automatically presume that any show with abstract visuals is NGE ripoff somehow? This same goes with the Psycho Pass and GitS: Innocence, outside that both are detective investigations related to cyborgs. Psycho-pass is debate about morality and law, when Innocence is just another case for section 9 involving psycho with dolls obsession and hacking. Literally not much in common outside the cyberpunk police theme.
      "Gen Urobuchi = LAZY PLAGIARIST!"
      Considering your previous examples basically anyone who make Science Fiction is "dirty plagiarist" of Marry Shelly 0_0
      So again, either you are troll or a complete idiot..
      PS: If someone want example of real Evangelion clone then I suggest check RahXephon.. plus it is a superior then NGE clone.. based on Raiden because NGE is also clone of that.

    This episode is legitimately my favorite anime abandon episode ever. It represents everything what Bennett and I stand for and goddamn it, I want anime to great again, just like it was back in the 90's and 2000's before everything went to hell in the 2010's. Course, if you want to know if their is any anime series/movie/etc. That was made in 2009 and is as near perfect as Cowboy Bebop and Macross Plus, look no further than Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, because you cannot call yourself an anime fan unless you have seen every episode of this masterpiece plus the OVA episodes that were released afterwards.

  • @Asehpe

    Sage... thinking again about reaction, I think you're experincing that animē burn-out that people feel every now and then, after having seen those works of pure art that are so good one fears the experience is never coming back.
    The hard part is, you may be right. The experience may never come back again.
    The good part is, it doesn't matter. If perfection were to prevent us from enjoying anything else, from being interested in other things... then it wouldn't be perfection, it would be only some strange kind of addictive drug.
    Not all meals are works of art; some are just hotdogs on buns. Yet somehow they are as important, as great, as the meals that are works of art. All of them, after all, keep us alive. :)

    So you gushed about how awesome this OVA, have a grandiose speech about the quality of anime today is and had a bunch of voice actors cameo in your video and you don't even talk about the actual story of the OVA?! Wow Bennett that sucks. I would have hated to see what would have happened if Linkara actually said "yes" to your offer to erase "One More Day", you probably would have only removed the deal with Mephisto, but kept everything else that was wrong with that story in tact?! Somehow this makes Bill Rogers tearing you a new one more justified then ever and now more then ever I want to see Rob Paulsen punch you in the face with the Marg Hand from GaoGaiGar. Good day to you sir!
