  • Hi Buddies,
Parakeets are a wonderful choice of pet bird, as they are low maintenance, friendly, and even great for beginners.
But you still have to remember that you're going to be raising a living, intelligent creature, and that's why you need to be prepared for any scenario.
In this video you'll learn what it takes to be a good bird owner, what mistakes you should avoid, taming tips and even life hacks.

Skyler says thank you for posting these instructions so budgie owners will know how to keep us healthy and happy and veterans can have refresher courses.
We just bought a new budgie 3 weeks ago. My granddaughters met him today and were able to teach him a few things he wouldn’t learn from us because we had him out of his cage
I can’t imagine having my bird locked up in prison.
We just wish the pet shops near us didn’t insist on the breeders clipping their wings. It sad 😢watching Skyler trying to fly. I hope it won’t take a long time for them to grow back

hey, i have a pet budgie and these tips are really helping me out. but i have a few problems. my family can’t exactly afford a huge cage for my bird atm, so he stays in a small-medium cage. although, i do let him out as much as i can. also, my parents won’t take me out to the pet store to get new toys for my budgie so he has been stuck with the same ones. i do tend to rearrange his cage sometimes when i feel it needs a change. i have another problem. my pet bird was gifted from a family friend, but a mirror came with his cage. three to be exact. i feel my budgie has become obsessed with himself and slightly aggressive, but i cant take it away from him because he might become sad. i’ve been asking my parents to get him a friend, but they say no. i’m worried for my budgie because he cant live without a mirror, and has been biting me when i go near his mirror. its not as often anymore, still sometimes happens when i’m trying to change his food. (mirror is near his food but there is no space to move it.) i know my budgie does trust me but can be slightly aggressive at times, so he bites me when he’s on my finger. it’s not a nibble, itks a bite. i don’t react at all to him biting but he still does it. i dont know why. my bird is actually a family pet, but i feel i’m the only one caring for it. when i get a job, i’ll do my best to care for my bird and give him a fresh, new start. (bigger cage and everything) thank you so much for these tips, and i wouldnt know how to properly care for my budgie if you weren’t there. (if you see this, please give me some tips!)💓

Do you still need some tips? Because I've learnt that my budgies love branches with leaves and hanging budgie safe plants in their cage far more than most store bought toys. Also something I've learned thanks to a visit at a vet, hide treats. You give them some food? Spread it out on some plate or something like this and cover it a bit with something light, like dry leaves or paper. Introduce that slow tho, so he learns that this is also a food spot, but is still able to normally eat at the usual safe one. Also mine love when I make them cookies. Just some veggies, some fruit, an egg and their seed, then cooked. I use an oven, I don't know if a pan would be good for that, but if you do have an oven you're allowed to use he'd love those. without the egg you probably wouldn't have to cook it (though I've heard that baked veggies are sweeter for them), just mix it with something like a soft banana or apple and put on some plate. I don't know if you live in a city or not, but if you have any access to trees away from city (or at least the most polluted spots), then they'd love some branches. Also when you give them veggies you could mess them up a bit, like make holes in one bit and put the second bit inside, just so it's a bit more engaging and complicated.

4:49 I disagree with this, yes it’s harder to tame outside the cage but inside the cage should be your birds safe space and a place for it to go when it’s overwhelmed from its taming and wants a break. In the long term you can build way more trust from taming outside and keeping their cage as their safe space.

I wanted to be a good bird mom, but I didn’t have enough money for a vet & proper playground & had been pressured to not clean it as often as I can out of fear of making it too clean for my birds.
I did make one out of branches but I used branches from a poisonous tree because I didn’t know it was poisonous.
I ironically suspected the wrong tree of being poisonous too.
I had 2 perches made from fiddle leaf fig & a bunch of perches made from delonix regia.
Next time I’ll get a budgie it’ll be when I’ll have my own abode.

    Heya Salvadore Budgie!
I really enjoy to watch your videos in my free time. They are so helpful and interesting but a problem has seemed to occur with one of my budgies.
I have two budgies, Olive and Sunny. Olive is the male and Sunny is the female. They both live in my bedroom. They have a medium sized cage which they never go in anyway, only to eat, they have a good amount of toys to play with too. They have a seeded diet and almost everyday I try to give them some apple or kale which they enjoy. They have a sleeping routine which I am consistent with. But recently, Olive has began to pluck his feathers around his chest. This was a real shocker to me because one of the main reasons why this is caused is because of stress. The only thing that I could think of is that sometimes a light in my bedroom is left on during the night and they might hear comotion coming from downstairs which could cause stress perhaps.
Another reason this problem could occur is boredom but I've never seen my birds as bored. They are always playing with toys and chatting with eachother so I don't really see this as a problem.
I do have a cat but he is always out of sight of the budgies and they never seem scared of him anyway.
Maybe you have an idea of what's going on and could possible help me. Thank you for your time, Salvadore Budgie!
You have an amazing channel and your work helps many budgie owners across the countries.
    Thank you.

Hello! No one responded so I wanted to try and help a bit. I recommend going to an avian vet and getting a full exam including bloodwork to rule out any medical issues. Plucking can be caused by so many things like medical issues, unhealthy diet, not enough enrichment, unregulated hormones (nest boxes or any spot that can be used as a nest, not enough sleep, interrupted sleep, free feeding, etc), improper cage set up, lack of exercise, etc. I’d do some of your own research and see what you may be doing wrong, assuming it isn’t an internal medical issue. I will say that a budgie’s diet should be mainly high quality pellets and chop with 1 tablespoon max of seed a day. Fruit should be feed 2-3 times a week max due to high sugar content. On my channel, I have playlists created to help people find good videos and channels on topics they may be struggling with if you want to check them out. Please, go to an avian vet and do a full wellness exam though.

    • @parrotperson-xx8470
      @parrotperson-xx8470 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@ShaynaFlowers Ah, sorry for the late reply but I think that it all makes sense now!
I think that interrupted sleep may be the issue here. My budgies sleep often gets interrupted due to commotion coming from downstairs and lights being left on. Unhealthy diet could possibly be another option but they have had the same diet for years so I don't quite see how that could suddenly have an impact now. But thank you so much for your advice! I will now try to put my budgies on a more fruity and green diet and I'll try to turn more lights off. Thank you!!

When I was 10 my family and I had around 6 buddies. They were always in a cage and lived outside. I loved them but I always felt sad and knew I was a bad bird mum. Because I was young and didn’t understand I opened the cage and let them “free” little did I know they would die the next day because birds like that can’t live in the wild. I cried for weeks. Long story short today I went to my friends house and they had a budgie, it brings me back and now I want a budgie that I can actually take care of and have fun with (fly in my room, play etc). But I know my mother will say no.

for those looking to save money, Temu has really good cheap bird toys, (and bird supplies in general) they have huge 10-15 pack of toys for under $10! Way better deal than petsmart

Even if lm not a beginner, l still like learning more about these little cute creatures. Btw lm wondering what color my baby budgie will be but l have a feeling that it would be either a blue budgie like skip or a rainbow budgie like Neo or even a half-sider budgie, but the chances are super rare

My bird passed away about a month ago, and my room has been empty, after I cleaned up the cage and put it in the basement while I think of if I want to get a new one my room has felt so empty, my birds name was Skyler, she was beautiful, and a little sassy and dramatic, and I loved her singing when I came back from getting some water. She used to fly to my shoulder and do a little spin and then nuzzle up under my hair and probably fall asleep. She got sick and my vet was out of town and they felt TERRIBLE they sent me a letter after she passed saying how bad they felt that they got stuck in a airport, I am thinking of getting a new bird and I've been watching some videos hoping I will do a good job. Thank you for tips man.

I got my bird from someone I don't know if it's the actual cage it was in when I got it but it was a small cage with dowel perches and one plastic toy and mirror it she acted like it never left a cage she couldn't even fly properly and i think it was just a decoration I had her for about two years and she goes absolutely everywhere in my room but I still haven't tamed her but she puts herself back in the cage so I don't really need to worry about it but she starting to trust me

It sounds easy to tame birds separetely but I own a couple of lovebirds. And they scream and get scared if they do not see each other. ☹ So far I reached a point where female bird does not run away like crazy, stays at the place but definately is scared. And male one is scared and hiding behind her.
It got a bit better since I started introducing different toys for them like leaves or even toilet paper to shred it. And when these things fall, I just grab them and put back. So, they kind of know now that I am there to put toys back. But it is impossible to put fingers close to them.
Maybe someone has some taming tricks for a couple?
P,S. I am owning them for 4 months now and we bought them already as adults. Is it even possible to deserve their trust in that point ?

When I go on break, I go to the pet store across the street almost everyday to see the birds. One thing caught me off gaurd though, if I put my hand and keep it still in the Budgies pen, 7 or 8 of them come and start nibbling my hand or biting hard. Surprisingly when I lift my arm up. I'll have four little friends, and they start playing with my glasses and going to my shoulder chirping away. I guess I've done something right.
Also the district manager wants to hire me over at the pet store because I go in there all the time to tame down the birds. The only two birds I am having a really hard time with is the ring neck parrots those dudes hurt.
