I'm a Samoan Kiwi, born and bred in NZ but now living in Australia. The Haka is a Maori tradition, but we in Samoa have our own and it's not called a Haka. Just like all other Polynesians, they all have a similar war cry. The Haka in sports is an All Black thing. So there is no disrespect for the Haka because the New Zealand All Blacks were the first to ever have such a war cry before every game. But it's not a Maori thing only. The Hawaii Warriors are not exploiting or stealing the Haka, they are expressing themselves in a war cry like my Manu Samoa Rugby team do when they perform the Manu (our own traditional war cry) If it hadn't have been for the all conquering All Blacks rugby team, there would never have been a haka in the sporting arena. The All Blacks now have their own personal Haka, the Kapa O Pango. Leave these poly boys to do what is tradition in all Pacifica. Thanks to the All Blacks, they have made the Haka acceptable in the sporting world and admired globally and allowed us as Polynesians know that we too an express ourselves through our own War Cry.

They identify with their traditions through 100s -1000s years of ancestry , its embedded in each cultures dna . I'm not Samoan and I'm not Hawaiin.... but it lives in me. I grew up partially in HI and it's an experience I could never describe. I'm NOT CAPABLE of watching these and not FEELING it. It does sumthin for me as if I WERE Polynesian. I've learned about the history of Polynesian people and their struggle and I relate to it. It was THEM who took me under their arms and showed me the Local way. They taught me a lot about what it was to be a local. They taught how to respect the Ina and it's people. Til this day HI is my home. DC is HOME, home, cuz that's where I'm from. But HI is home as well. I'm HOME when I'm on the islands. 💯
This is the best haka I've seen, the voices in unison...so powerful...much respect. I'm not of this descent but desire this level of brotherhood portrayed here.
Though I'm sad at seeing so few instances of the Ha'a Koa being performed, I gotta admit that the haka dance is pretty impressive, and if they performed this in front of me I would run away crying.

Hawaiians also have an awesome traditional haka or Ha'a Koa. A big part of the haka is that we get to Represent our Maori heritage. I think it would be awesome if you guys did a traditional Hawaiian Ha'a Koa.

Therefore it should be performed in the right setting or to a male. I am Maori of Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Kahungunu ki porangahau decent. I love our culture both as māori and kanaka maōli being expressed. Just bare in mind to be appropriate to the culture it hails from.

@@up.northbro I guess you could call it their own version. The "ceremonial cry" is a performance DEVELOPED in a lot of our Polynesian cultures. For example the Siva Tau which is the Samoans version of the haka, was never part of historical culture. It was developed due to witnessing the All blacks performing Ka Mate, and then it basically caused a domino effect with our other Polynesian cultures developing their own version of a "ceremonial cry". The haka will rightfully forever belong to our Maori brothers and sisters.

Mate first off if i was 1 of those maori boys doing the haka i would at least go back to my turangawaewae or iwi (belonging place or tribe) and speak with the kaumatua(elders) to see if its okay, after all this tradition is sacred to our people in all accounts and should not be used if u dont have the mana or wairua to understand it. Im Maori and agree. Polynesian culture is a lot deeper then what people think. Maori, Samoan Tongan all have certain protocols to each culture. There is a spiritual/Ancestral aspect to the haka that non maori do not understand

We are all Polynesians and the Maori should be proud that people love their Haka even though they don’t do it right because they are not poly or weren’t raise Poly. @@up.northbro I guess you could call it their own version. The "ceremonial cry" is a performance DEVELOPED in a lot of our Polynesian cultures. For example the Siva Tau which is the Samoans version of the haka, was never part of historical culture. It was developed due to witnessing the All blacks performing Ka Mate, and then it basically caused a domino effect with our other Polynesian cultures developing their own version of a "ceremonial cry". The haka will rightfully forever belong to our Maori brothers and sisters.
