    My best practice advice: just draw it, even if it looks bad at first. Persistency will bring improvement. Specifically with making manga, even just reading manga and thinking how they put together the page will help with many things, from story to screentone techniques :)

      REVULSION sound True, true. Doing a rough version with a blue draft pencil is helpful for guiding the refinement of the final drawing, I guess a literal “blueprint,” as you said ^__^

      Kyla Puyat if you draw with a blue pencil, it won’t appear when scanned. It won’t appear when copying a sheet of paper drawn in blue either, if you draw relatively light. Light blue automatically just doesn’t show up so it’s very convenient :)

    I love the analogy at 9:20 hands are level 5 and eyes are level 10 so you think you're bad. One of the sad things about leveling up is that I see flaws in the art I used to like, pieces that inspired me 2 years ago just look like a collection of flaws now. But, this is why I've focused my time on art, there doesn't seem to be a ceiling--the art can always be better.

      Yes, there is no ceiling, which is wonderful, because you can always keep learning and practicing... if that's your thing, otherwise, you won't make it.

    • @Tenkichan
      @Tenkichan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@seigeengine That may be true, but I think it's a bit different with art... also because you usually learn from the art which inspires you and you can't do that if it's heavilly flawed.
      You wouldn't learn a language from a person who speaks it incorrectly, would you? Or would you rather be 'enjoying it's flaws'?

    In the hobbyist community, there's definitely a taboo to copy others. Cause there have been cases off blatantly stealing pictures of others and lying, that it's ther own. That's what wrong, not for studying. But when looking at professional artist, you regularly see post of master studies, where they intentionally study a painting, as an example delacroix. But it's really important that you remind yourself, to try to get into the thinking of that master you're studying. So that's more similar in the west and east

    • @Radgerayden-ist
      @Radgerayden-ist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Basically when studying you're aiming to understand the piece instead of copying. If you can do fine by observation, it's obviously better than tracing, since by tracing you focus too much into the detail instead of the whole. But if you can't even draw the lines correctly then tracing will help you. My 2 cents.

      I guess it depends on the culture. I know in classical Arabic the main high art if you like was poetry. A common saying there to paraphrase is,something empty or filled with bad things will produce it's own likeness.
      So the classical Arab poets would learn the masters and imitate them; see if you can imitate someone great at something then that means you've understood their ways. Meaning now you can create your own originals with the great art as your reference and not mediocrity.

    • @darkravenguitar6392
      @darkravenguitar6392 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would say that people really should take up copying not just for understanding but it helps with skill. I remember tracing a character a bunch of times as a kid, until I could draw it on from memory. Then I decided to create my own character one day, and use the character I had memorised as reference only to discover that while my angles weren’t right, since I hadn’t studied that yet, I was able to draw from imagination decently despite that. It really helped me improve in my work. From there I think it’s good to delve into thinking and then go off on your own. But I like the step by step of develop the skill a bit, then understand the theory, then do my own thing.

    • @puppeli

      If you do quick sketches, like maybe 15 seconds to 3 minutes, you will be using a lot more paper. Like for example check out the Croquis Cafe videos (by *onairvideo* here on youtube). They have different nude models posing usually for 5 x 1 minutes, 4 x 2 minutes and 1 x 5 minute poses. 1 Croquis Cafe video takes about 20 minutes, and usually i end up filling up 3 to 4 pages with the drawings.
      Still, the more you draw the better (withing reason of course)

    At first I was like “Wow 1000 pages a year would be hard.” But if I were to do 3 pages a day, first one is line art practice and that would fill up a page in like 10 minutes, anatomy practice would take around 35 minutes, then I could do whatever on the last page.

    In Japan they have a style called “deformed” and is not the big head and small body we recall in the west, is just a deformation of how a real human is. Japanese people and artist have a special sense and ability for that. Common people can remember one or two character pattern (that character, from that angle) and draw them perfectly, much close to a pro. So remember a pattern from an artist they like and draw it is also similar to draw kanjis to me. Japanese people can draw kanji, wich means remember strokes order, balance and thickness of lines of a very complex ideograms. In the west, artist watch more reality, and need to understand more that in order to accomplish and achieve a reasonable rapresentation of a good scene or a good illustration. So copying another artist is just a copy of the copy (out from another copy etc.), wich means lose the point and the quality.so that’s why i think we have different approach to drawing. Animators are the most complete for me, just because they need to imagine that deformed character not only in 360 degrees, but also how to move it as smooth as possible. Same for figure modeller, called “zoukeshi”, they need to understand parts of the body of that deformed character, put the correct bones, muscles and move them in a real way, without change too much the character style. Look at one piece figure is the perfect example.

    Something I have noticed about manga artists, specifically, is that most start out very creative, pushing the format with unique kinds of transitions and effects, but as they go forward the work usually becomes more orthodox, or standard. Maybe this is because it's a job with deadlines and the infatuation with it wears off, or maybe editors just tamp down that kind of experimentation.
    In any case, I like to hunt down the earliest published work of artists I like because it is so often full of interesting things like that.

    • @JustusLynetta
      @JustusLynetta 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Manga artists live in a field of mass production rather than creativity. They need to produce content quickly and efficiently, therefore many will drop most of their time consuming or more interesting ideas as time goes.

      I think it's kind of like Hollywood, lots of people make artistic films, but Hollywood knows how to work a genre to make money. Manga and anime are like that too. There are people who are making art, but most people in the industry are business people cranking out generic shonen

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Being innovative takes a lot of time. It's not something you can force by grinding more... and most innovations aren't good enough to keep being used.
      The more you have to grind, the more you're worried about getting the work done than how to do it in a new way.

      Same. New sketchbooks use to be daunting because it seems like so much art to do, but if you genuinely enjoy drawing and especially learning and experimenting, the pages start to fly by fast. At first, I didn't know what I was doing, but the more I learned, the more I saw what exactly I needed to be practicing and what I would like to experiment with. Starting out, even just a drawing a day gets the ball rolling.

    • @SymphanyinSorrow
      @SymphanyinSorrow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I almost always use references. I stray pretty far from them, but they always help, if not at least for inspiration. When I started, I had these huge stories and ideas, but I failed with all of them because I rushed it. I think its better to start with a small reachable idea. something to work on while you better your skills. Wait until your skills match the greatness of your big idea. Maybe start with a 4 panel comic. Do one a day, and by the end of the year, you'll see how much better your art and writing has gotten. 4 Panel comics are way more flexible than manga. If the art style changes or grows over time, its okay. If you experiment with the art style for a day, its okay. If you change the tone of the writing for a day, its okay. You have a lot of wiggle room with 4 panel comics. And if you make one that just sucks, you only used up 1 day instead of months to years on a manga.

    I really dn't like Bleach but Kubo, is my greatest inspiration. I really admire how good he is and how he designs characters in his manga. He is the artist that I am looking up to and to be honest, I copy most of his styles and he is the reason why I can, barely, draw something now.

    I'm always trying to get better. The 1000 paper idea, on top of my comic that i want to create, seems like a great idea
    Although I worry the art in my comic will become inconsistent. gotta be careful not to change the style.

    Copying isn’t practice? That’s how the masters studied... that’s how you learn and break down what people at higher levels do.
    Saying that isn’t practice isn’t correct in my opinion. Your style is a combination of your personal experience with drawing and the art/people that inspire you.

    • @chocolateicecream6995
      @chocolateicecream6995 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends on what the word copy means to you. I think copy means you draw it without understanding it. so the fact you say you learn and break down what people at higher levels do is more analyzing, understanding and deconstructing than copying. Thus, from my own perspective, copying is mindless and doesn't help you improve if you don't put thought into what you see.

      Good news is yes you can, bad news is it's gonna be almost impossible. In the history we only knew some foreigner who successful entered this industry. And yet they just end up with making VN, LN, illustration, and assistant manga. But making their own manga? I never hear one

    Copying styles practices figures and all is fine, as long has you develop a sense for the form. Like Mikey said you can't learn from nothing you have to have some sort of refreances and of course you shouldn't copy and say it's all your own style. ^^'

    a way to get good at manga is to learn anatomy, draw realistically and you can bend it any way you want. And that is how your favorite mangaka are made Naruto one piece not sure what you like but it's all in learning.

    Actually, copying the work of others as a form of practice is encouraged over here in the West too, especially in formal art classes where master studies are common place. The only people here who say it isn't practice are generally those who aren't artists themselves, or those who think it's someone else stealing their art.

    • @PreciousIvy
      @PreciousIvy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Feng Zhu encourages to draw from life and never from other artists' works since you'll end up copying their style that they've developed through years.
      well as much as I respect him, I think taking stuff from multiple artists is what keeps me going.
