Grateful that my bass clarinet student found this and shared it with me - interesting piece and a welcome addition to the bass clarinet solo repertoire. The samba/mambo section is weirdly fabulous!
Absolutely extraordinary. Incredible Bass clarinet writing, one of the most beautiful and genuinely expressive pieces I have ever heard, the samba and mambo sections are awesome, and extremely effective orchestration. Could listen to this for a lifetime.
How did he get to a low low c.... I have a bass clarinet for school and can only get to a low e flat... Did he have a special bass clarinet or am i just dumb and am missing something...
Low C's are rare on student/intermediate model. They also cost a lot more typically so schools won't touch them. To answer your question, yes they are made different than your low Eb bass, and taller. They also aren't standard because quite a few people don't want to pay that extra cost for 3 more notes that you'll only use if the composer demands a low C bass to make the piece possible. That said, if you have to play that piece, and you only have an Eb, then you're out of a job. If you're interested in getting a pretty good one for cheap, check out the Kessler bass, Earspasm even gave it an in-depth review Sorry for rambling

I listened to this twice to give it a fair appraisal. The work has a few good things going for it, namely good orchestration and a good performance. Even though the solo part is written out, there's a diatonic randomness to it that (for me) fails to connect harmonically/thematically with the orchestra. The end effect makes it seem (to my ears) like the solo part was an afterthought, not created as an organic whole with both parts coming together.

Yo pensé Benny Goodman
Dude am I in Cyrodiil now?
Stop right there criminal scum!
