Model 4 stroke IC engine with visible combustion.
Original design: Jan Ridders.
Redesigned and constructed by Huib Visser, Stirlingmodels, The Netherlands - 2013 - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
This needs to be filmed on super high speed camera.
I'd love to see SloMoGuys do a spot on this motor. It'd be awesome to see the combustion in action!
Exactly.
*It uses fuel vapor from the fuel tank. BRILLIANT! All engines should have been built like this 130 years ago, this is so smart but so few do it*
such a beauty! maybe you could use high-speed photography to capture the evolution of the flame.. #slomoguys
Yes someone really needs to film this on high speed!
#slomoguys
I did thus with one of my Bengs models actually ... result is ... surprizing :-)
Yeah.. Those cost a lot, so if you really want to see it fork out soem cash.
Saw this a long time ago, and got back here through an engine mix. Love the visible combustion, and as an engineer that does wood and metal working, and design, I wanna say this is a beautiful piece of workmanship. You do high credit to the amateur, in the old revered sense of "done beautifully for love", not it's current distorted meaning
of something sub-par to "professionally done". Brass an aluminum finishes complement well.
Don't you just love how car guys are genuinely nice to one another in the comments... its a great community.
Really fun to see the actual explosions taking place
Both r exothermal reactions
It's a rapid burn, not an explosion. :-)
So what? They are both the oxidation of a fuel but in an engine an explosion will destroy the engine is a very short period of time, a rapid burn won't.

Here it is 2019 and I'm just finding this remarkable machine. It proves my theory that glass cylinders can be used for such things. Love the work you have done, excellent and thank you.
That may be the cutest exhaust note I have ever heard
Awesome, you should make a deal with the slow mo guys. Would love to see this in ultra slow motion!
This is an amazing and beautiful piece of art. You have all my respect, sir.
I bow to your machining skill. That's absolutely beautiful.
This is awesome! Interesting to see the actual explosions happening inside a combustion engine in real time. I once saw something recorded through a tiny glass window in a car motor but you could not really see much. here you can see everything.
Very good for learning, you should sell it to schools worldwide by the thousands.
Wonderful, good work, I enjoyed seeing this little machine working.
Thank you.
This is a very beautiful piece of the art. Very appreciated. Thanks for sharing.
One of the coolest homemade machines I have seen In a very very long time!
Awesome video. It the best DIY model engine project I have ever seen. Cheers Aaron
Stunning, more, please!
I fell in love with this thing as I saw the nice battery holder at the anode :)
This is one of those videos that make me an addict to youtube. Well done!
A perfect example, so well thought out and machined. Was a pleasure to watch this, thanks.
I just love the battery compartment. Simple and elegant.
Favorite piece, the AA ignition system. Would love it even more if the combustion was completely visible. Super clean build all the same.
Hallo Douglas,
There was a small leakage indeed. But after cleaning I glued the glascylinder with Loctite 603 for the second time. This problem is solved and the engine runs still better.
Greetings from wet Holland,
Huib Visser
This is ART indeed !!!
Very Educational !!!
Thanks for sharing !!!
What a interresting motor and a jewel to look at..You make you engines with a superbe finish! Petje af ,meneer Ridder!

Beautiful. Lots of care has gone into that. It was worth it.
i ever dream see the internal flame of the motor... and now i see this. thank you very much!
That's a gorgeous looking motor you've made there, the rotary valves where a clever idea.
sweet project engine !
STUNNING! I love it when art and engineering merge.
The shaft is indeed hollow, but the intake and exhaust are separated by a piece of silverstee rod.
Stroke 1: 0 degree- intake opened- exhaust closed
Stroke 2 : -90 degree - compression- intake and exhaust closed
Stroke 3: -180 degree- combustion- intake and exhaust closed
Stroke 4:-270 degree - intake closed- exhaust opened

Wat een geweldig mooi motortje! Ongelofelijk mooi gedaan!
Nice blue flame - air/fuel mixture spot on.
Connor was polite, and now Huib knows how to spell 2 words he probably uses a lot. No harm done. One should appreciate being corrected politely.
This is brilliant!! I need one of these
This is awesome! Someone could make these for sale to schools and teachers! :)
Very elegant. Beautiful engineering.
amazing, something to be truly proud of creating! love the little battery compartment!
Lovely machine. Thank for showing the great job.
Who freaking dislikes something like this, seriously?
+deven bo they dislike it coz they can't buy it...
People who still live in the steam age.
people that are tired of internal combustion nonsense?
C'mon now...we've beaten this dead horse for over 100 years now !
hintzofcolorconcepts Oh, electric guy, your electric motor pollutes by producing co2 and o3, because of the electricity going through the copper coils. And the battery leaks lithium, it's really toxic. Some days ago a battery from by friend phone leaked, I just smelled it for a bit and I was sleepy all day. Imagine your cars. Hydrogen internal combustion engines are the way.
hintzofcolorconcepts: Not dead, but very much alive, with the vast majority of vehicles today powered by IC engines.
This is awesome!! I would love to see slow motion high speed video. Excellent work bro.
A beautifully crafted machine.
I think i finally understood how combustion engines work
We need more great thinkers like this!!!
This is beautiful! I would love to meet you in person... Ive dreamed of visiting Holland maybe this would finally five me an excuse lol
I love the rotary intake and exhaust valve its ingenious
Super cool! Would be neat to see what happens inside the cylinder as the load is increased.
Such an amazing device! I'd like to see it at 10,000 rpm though!!!!
I would like if one of those superspeed cam films this awesome engine :D
It would be great to see a high speed camera view to show the flame front. Reminds me of my old Gunson colourtune glass sparkplug from wayback. Excellent piece of work.. and, another use for WD40 too.
Its just litterally.......
a piece of ART! beautifull :)
Wunderschön, da schlägt das Herz eines Modellbauers höher.
A functional piece of art!
That is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Insanely well controlled piece of craft. Totally steam punk!
This is an AMAZING model! Excellent work! I can only wish to have the skills to build this; alas I do not, so I'll envy your work instead.
beautiful...
Amazinly wounderful. Hats off, sir.
Very cool. I may try to make one with a glass head also.
Cool, I like it. Most spend their day working, be nice if people had time to do projects like this.
A beautiful model. I wish I had that talent
Had one of these in the lab at college in the early 80's, cool.
Hallo Ken Wes,
The glass cylinder is made of a medical full glass seringe 20 ml
The ID is extremely round.
Search for example Ebay - glass cylinder 20 ml -
Greetings from Holland

Absolutely exquisite.
Only a few minor comments, about spelling:
"Cilinder" is correctly spelled "Cylinder"
"Neodyme Magnet" is actually "Neodymium Magnet"
I don't want in any way to detract from the amazing engine you've built, I'm just a wacko about spelling.
What a beautiful little engine!
Impressive craftsmanship!
Something about this video makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I don't know what it is, but I like it.
very cool, I would love to see it with a high speed camera.
Very fine craftsmanship!
I would love to watch a series on the building of something like this. I'm curious how you get the tolerances right, and those nice rounded edges.
Nice close up macro shots.
Wow, What a craftsmanship
Well done man! Beautiful!
Amazing. Want one....!
Fantastic piece of work!
Hallo young Beardman,

The glas cylinder is a piece of a full glas medical seringe 20 ml.
The inner diameter is extremely round.
Such seringes you can find on Ebay but also in medical stores.
Dutch greetings
Huib Vissser
it would be cool to see the 4 stroke with a super slow motion camera
that is pretty amazing
I love this thing, beautiful presentation.
Could be a fascinating test-bed for various carburetor designs!
Some of these wild claims could be tested in a very affordable fashion.
Magnets? Fuel vaporization? Pre-heated fuel? Additives?
Yeah, IC engines are well studied, but this is a rare look inside that might reveal something quite new!
I really cringe when I see people use WD40 as a lubricant. It works well as a degreaser and water displacer, but it's crap for lubrication. Use a proper lube if you want that engine to last.
gizmoguyar: This is an experimental display engine not expected to work hard and last for many years.
That does not make a lick of sense Ellie.
Why on earth would one not attempt to use a lubricant that actually lubricates best? Why would one essentially wear something out prematurely?
There COULD of course be a reason. You however didn't bother to give that side much though. Simply let it wear out, as it will take a long time it doesn't matter.
Can I hazard a guess that you are not an engineer or someone who works with mechanical things.
The long-term active ingredient is a non-volatile viscous oil which remains on the surface to which it is applied, giving lubrication and protection from moisture.
You should make a bigger on of these with a lower rpm so people can see more clearly how a four stroke works
nice ignition set up you got
Beautiful!
A beautiful piece of art! Cheers!!!
Thank you for the upload and this brilliant machine!
work of art
Very nice work.
WD 40 as rustpreventer is only for maintenance to avoid rustforming on the valve and the valvehole. The material of the valve an the CYLINDER block is cast iron. Never lubricate the graphite piston with oil!
Friendly greetings from Holland.
Huib Visser
That is Amazing craftsmanship. Very nice video very interesting.
Glass cylinder's are very round , almost perfect , you get them and then make your engine parts to fit.
Do a search for 'Inside an engine'
Nice work Stirling models!
I especially like the rotary valves.
Beautiful machining work!
Very nice.
I expected the use of a highspeed camera for ultra slowmotion capture of the combustion process.
I thought thats what this project was made for, isn't it?
Now, make a 200hp version. :P
Fucking nice and I am sure because of the camera limitations one would see more ignitions and more detail in reality .. one question here, what do you use for piston rings ?
Beautiful Engine and Great Video
Cute little engine. Put a little generator on there and make a little desk top power station
