    The added capacitance doesn't just result in a straight lo pass filter. If so, lowest possible capacitance would be the goal...and then lo pass at a later stage if you want. However, the filter created by capacitance is very resonant. So, when adding capacitance, this possibly very strong peak is moved with the lo pass filter. You'd have a really hard time recreating that effect using eq on a low capacitance starting point.

    I use this more on acoustic guitars with no tone control. With this I have tone control at my fingertips.

    I like the idea of the flexibility that it presents, my thinking is that it could help warm up the sound of "ice-picky" pickups in a guitar.

    I have a Tele in Open G for slide. I have a 4 position blade switch. Pos 4 is neck; pos 3 is neck and bridge in parallel; pos 2 is the bridge with a hardwired old Sprague bumblebee PIO cap (0.0020 uF) for a darker bridge pickup tone (think Albert Collins -ish); pos 1 is a normal (brighter) bridge. That pos 2 can really 'bark' at you, specially with slide.

    some tone knobs aren't tone knobs, but blend knobs... this is a great idea and at the player's reach

    I'm an old guy just starting my journey.. I have no idea what "my sound" is, but with the help of your videos, and community i wont be 90 still figuring that out... much love n appreciation!

    I think the cable is a cable. Adding more capacitance before the first buffer is not something that I'm interested in. I'd rather use an EQ pedal or even the tone knob (and the knob only if it's only for a short period of time). An EQ gives you a lot more flexibility on your tone

    • @diemturner5755
      @diemturner5755 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I agree with everything you're saying, I found this cable to do far more than adjusting my tone knob or an EQ could hope to accomplish. It did not just darken the treble response, there was a drive added in the low to low mids and it growled with a beef and girth I didn't find it to have in the neutral position. Don't get it twisted...I understand very well that all this is all highly subjective and everyone has their own way of doing things and how they like to do it. This isn't an attempt at arguing your points as, so it's been my experience anyways, there isn't really (well...not REALLY but there ARE amp/pedal combinations that are just shit no matter how the EQ is set or what you do on the pedals...dude in HS I knew had one of these kinda setups that just produced mud with no audible differentiation of the 6 strings so you might as well have farted dump trucks into the cable...the end result would have been indistinguishable...sorry for the rambly digression...) a wrong way of doing things, if what you're doing produces the sonic results you desire. I think this cable PLUS an EQ would be top fucking kek but as always, variable mileage, own thing, etc. /end rant ;-)
      Safe travels,
      -Diem

    It's very interesting.

    Because this device primarily affects the highs, this would have been a lot better test if the amp was set with less bass and more treble, and the guitar wasn't distorting.

    What capacitance values does the Neutrik Timbre have in mode 1,2,3 and 4? Neutrik do not mention these values.

    Another reason for having a low-capacitance guitar cable is reduced microphonic noise when handling the cable. Does adding capacitance at the timbrePlug negate that virtue of a low-capacitance cable? (I am supposing 'not',).

    It's very cool, but I would never use it myself. I want the most clarity possible and can adjust from there. Really cool product though

  • @diemturner5755
    @diemturner5755 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Subtle?! Are you kidding? The difference is (almost) night and day. It doesn't just darken the top end range, it also definitely beefs up the bottom end making it growl and it's almost as though it adds a subtle (now I'm using the term...löl...) drive to your tone but only in the low to low mids that actually sounded really fuckin' dope imho. I've been playing guitar for a smidge over 30 years and been involved with live sound reinforcement and studio work both professionally and privately for more than 20 and, as you, I was skeptical to put it mildly as to what this cable would do aside from dulling the trebble and making it muffled sounding. This went way past anything I could or would have expected something like this to do. It might be exorbitantly pricey as TS plugs go, but nothing insane and Neutrik connectors as good as they come in terms of quality and durability (though I'm sure it's a safe assumption this particular plug with moving parts won't have the same kind of road toughness as your standard connector, but I can't imagine that it's shite in lieu of how the rest of their hardware is designed and constructed). I may have to splurge on one of these plugs for xmas. Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful new device simulating old decrepit technology lol :D

    Have you taken one of these apart?
    I suspect it switches tiny capacitors across hot to ground.
    I wonder if it would be useful with a wireless pack... Or making it into a tiny pedal, with more settings.
    Radial has something called the Dragster with a dial on it, but it has no switch and is too big to connect between your guitar and the wireless pack.

  • @frantisca

    The dark tone of your variable cable end is quite subtle and can be heard mostly as a boost in the low frequencies to my ear... contrarily to the tone pot that rather cuts the treble.

    interesting. Im not sure i need that. What about the wireless guitar connectors? would be great to see how much differences are in in the frequences losses(or not) in comparison with regular 0,22mm cables. Thanks for the video

    Dylan, I agree that it seems like a subtle difference, but I think it has its place for some. My Question: When you mentioned making your pickups the same way (the ability to have the widest tone), does that mean your pickups give me more of a tone range on my guitar tone knob?

    • @DylanTalksTone
      @DylanTalksTone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is the goal with everything we build yes. Wider dynamic range. The volume knob gives you more control, and the tone curcuit as well

    Are instrument cables different than amp to speaker cabinet cable ?

    • @DylanTalksTone
      @DylanTalksTone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      dab745 YES!!! DO NOT use them interchangeably. You can damage your amp or start a fire

      @@DylanTalksTone Well, while slightly hyperbolic imho but technically...if he's running a 100W head into a 4 Ohm load and he's converted the leads from his apple headphones to a makeshift instrument cable...I would also advise against utilising that as your speaker lead cuz something's just gonna give so erring on the side of caution is a good call on your part. At that stage, should nothing else be available, open up the drywall and pull some electrical wiring outta the walls. At least then you'll have some proper wire cross section to push some wattage through...but now I'm just being stupid. Sorry.... I'm a jester at heart but I do realize that there's a time for Clownstick von Fuckface and a time for "don't joke about something that an idiot could potentially burn his house down with in a worst case scenario" when giving professional advice. Just for clarity's ake, no where was I implying that dab745 is a moron, it was more in the abstract hypotheoretical visual phantalization.

    Fixes brittle, super bright single coils for sure.
    There is a particular tone I can only get from a higher capacitance cable.. Maybe this is the ticket instead of having to switch cables.
    Also, people say capacitance only affects high end... And I'm not sure if it's a combo of capacitance and resistance, but I have a particular cable, that even if I try to match the capacitance with another cable, through length or whatever, I can never get the same feel... Maybe the same brightness, but some other voodoo seems to be happening.

    Does the rt ang plug also go silent when unplugged ? Also if i use good buffers on my board why would i need low capacitance cable or do i . And i play mainly tele so bright n up front . Like 1 other comment said , i can bring high end n mids down if need to but cant increase whats not there .

    is the pot or switch in that product a no-load pot or true bypass, so that it doesn't affect anything when it is set to 'off' ?

  • @gordyn5292
    @gordyn5292 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Dylan, just watched your shielding videos, which are excellent. I have a couple of questions -
    1. Why are pick-ups not wired with a harness which would allow quicker and easier changes? Is this something that would hinder the performance of particular pick-ups?
    2. It's quite a meticulous job to shield a cavity correctly so would it not make sense for the guitar world to have a preformed conductive pot that would fit into the cavities? I'm thinking along the lines of a foil takeaway tray or something like a cupcake case in thin copper?

    • @LeonardoSilva-gr5fx
      @LeonardoSilva-gr5fx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      on my opinion, I'm a bass/guitar builder.
      1.EMG pickups are solderless, but you need to take the strings to change pups, there are guitars that are developed in a way you can change pups on the fly but they are... weird instruments, pups are installed from the back of the guitar so you need to take off some of the mass of the body, some even are installed on rails so you can change the position of the pickups, on my opinion the look like an ugly lego mess but are very versatile.
      2.- the problem with that is that every manufacturer have different specs on their electronic cavities, even in different years cavities change a little, making the supply of this product very tricky and very limiting to LP, strats or other standard stuff.
      making a faraday cage is not that much work for a builder, if in a pickle you can use conductive paint and have a similar effect as a faraday cage.

    Hi, Dylan, I have a question: do you think it's valid to use ferrite filters on audio cables or instrument cables? I know there are balanced cables, I only have that concern.

    Or you could just plug a longer cable in your HB guitar, and when you change guitar, you change cables... Otherwise, on my tele I switched the tone and volume pots for two volumes, one for each pup, and have made the switch a high pass filter for the neck, in the neck position, a high pass filter for the bridge in the middle position, and no tone cut in the bridge position... Works well if you ask me

      I actually just built a guitar for client where we put two separate tone curcuits in. One for each pickup on the same double gang pot. It’s really fun to experiment with that stuff.

      Our Normal cables at Dylancables.com are so low capacitance that you don't really NEED a buffer.

    • @nephetula
      @nephetula ปีที่แล้ว

      No. To get the fullest effect, the added capacitance should be across the (low impedance) guitar pickups, and not across the (usually) buffered output of a bunch of stomp boxes.

    You're way better off finding what type and value capacitors sound best in each guitar, and use as transparent a cable you can. Such a gimmick.
