    It's worth noting that it's a single man project which continues to blow my mind. Such perfection in so many areas of engineering, software, product design and aesthetics. Would I love this to be free software as was originally planned? Sure. But at the same time, big props to Trash80 and his vision.

      It's really a testament to how cohesive and fine-tuned a device can feel when it's a singular, focused vision, as opposed to tacking on features for bullet points on a box.

    • @tablaninja
      @tablaninja ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Isn’t the software free? You just have to configure a Teensy to run it, I think?

    Adored the "This Must be The Place" demo! You definitely have such a creative approach when it comes to recreating all the songs. I'm glad I stumbled upon your video, because you helped showcase and explain the M8 better than all the videos Ive seen so far. Thanks!!!

    excellent demos, loving this thing so far. have had mine about 2 weeks and already feel like i have the hang of navigation. your mention of combos in a fighting game are spot on

    Nice review and demo tracks Josh, ( I enjoyed your sk-1 video also ). I guess I am a M8 power user. Had the first production run and headless for many months before that. The screen is an IPS, the M8 is modelled after a gameboy. Trash80 was originally wanting to take one device on tour instead of a dual gameboy setup. On the Beta version the buttons are labelled select start A and B same as gameboy but were changed on the production units to make more sense of what they actually do on the M8, on that note it is also based on LSDJ's design with the blessing of LSDJ's creator.
    I agree if the M8 is on a stand among the synths etc it can be hard to see the screen but it can easily mirror it's screen if that's something that's needed, I will also say M8 is a beast at sequencing external gear. How it sequences chords and polyphony is done well as is the CC and program change support. The main advantages of the hardware are portability, auto save / load, works as class compliant audio interface, physical midi, use it for FX on hardware, use it as a hardware sound module, direct sample hardware, it looks cool. Also Bacon..

    • @JoshIsMakingMusic
      @JoshIsMakingMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good point about the mirroring. Never let me claim to be infallible! 😂 That's interesting about LSDJ, I have a lot of experience with it and the M8 felt immediately familiar, the connection makes sense.

      omg i assumed trash80 also made LSDJ since they're so similar xD good to know i will make sure to correct myself to the friends i excitedly ranted to about how bad i want an m8 and why lmao

    Hi Josh, thank you for making this video. It has helped me a lot to understand this little bugger. I was wondering if you would possibly share the demo files you showcased in this video - as I would love to learn how you structured everything more deeply. If not that is ok and I understand of course!

    • @JoshIsMakingMusic

      I actually like that idea a lot, I'll need a bit to get those together but I'll also have others to throw in.

    Nice review. I’m trying to get comfortable with the workflow since I’m a bit more used to the Polyend Tracker. Since the hardware is both a bit costly here in Sweden (with added import duty and VAT) and difficult to get from dirtywave I just got an Anbernic RG351V retro gaming device to connect with the Teensy 4.1 board and it works surprisingly well.

    • @JoshIsMakingMusic
      @JoshIsMakingMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And that's rad, I've got a similar retro gaming handheld, now I'm wondering if it can be Teensy-ed into a M8.

    Great video. Thank you. Your method of description is effective and easy to watch. Please do some detailed song creation tutorials. Most videos available show these amazing songs but not all the intricacies of creating the song. I’ve got the basics down but no clue how to make a song with all the cool transitions and buildups. There are no tutorials doing step by step. The videos that are available are people playing with their units and not describing anything so we learn nothing. Thank you again. Hope you’ll consider some in depth tutorials. They are definitely needed. The discords are 3 hours of adhd kids bouncing around their m8s making cool music but explaining nothing and going so fast that we cant follow.

      I'm in a Dirtywave M8 discord, definitely not an ADHD kid though... more of an ADHD adult, haha. That's a really great suggestion. I've considered doing longer walkthroughs going step-by-step through songwriting. I'll keep that suggestion in mind (might be a little while before it gets put into practice, though).

    I'd love to see you do a tutorial on making chiptunes on the M8; going through all the synth settings.

    • @inthefade
      @inthefade ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically for chip tunes stick to square waves and triangle waves for your synth voices. Then use noise samples for drums. Only use monophonic instruments, fast arpeggios replace chords. Never use filters.
      That will give you a NES/Gameboy sound.
      You can also use PCM samples, and that will be going towards SNES sounds. Lower bit depth and sample rate samples will sound more authentic.
      FM synthesis will sound more like the Sega Genesis/Master System.
      Then you can play from there and "break the rules" how you want!

  • @BCThunderthud

    I plugged in my M8 to charge halfway through this and I thought that demo track really sounds like it's coming out of the M8, sure enough of course it had taken over my audio, I had forgotten it does that. I "made" the headless version before my preorder arrived and it really fits about 98% of my needs with this, the screen on the handheld is uncomfortably small for me so I generally use it with my PC anyway. I'm glad I bought the real hardware because it's cool and I like Trash80 but I've never been one of those people who wants to go make music in the park.

    Nicely summarized - I knew every single cover you did and endorse your taste in music 😉 ! I preordered the M8 recently for delivery starting this July. What sold me was hearing so many users describe how effortlessly ideas can become music once the muscle memory kicks in. Oh, and my favorite topping might be pineapple on a teriyaki seasoned burger. 🙂

    Is it possible to make non 80s, non video game like and syntheave musics with it because most musics I listened made by it on TH-cam has sound from these I mentioned, I like these but don't want to make only these, and if the community of it is mainly filled with people from these genre you will feel not connected and able to find help that much, even if it's possible, is this M8 Tracker idea to make not these genre of musics? I like it's small and the graphic but OP-1 feel like it's actual mechanical while M8 is just keyboard with screen so you still feel like you are using a computer? Should I just use iPhone with some apps if music making for now it's just hobby for me
