Arthur, a middle-aged insurance man with an issue with commitment, drive back home one night from a date with his girlfriend Laurel. She wants him to meet her family, and he's spooked by her request.
But when Arthur gets into an accident, he calls 411 for help from a dilapidated phone booth and talks to a frighteningly omniscient service on the other line.
This iteration of 411 knows everything about Arthur, from his current romantic situation to his high school memories. And it has surprising insight into Arthur's current condition, giving him information -- and help -- in an unexpected way.
Writer-director Oliver Power, along with co-writer Rick Rosenberg -- has created a short drama that begins with the dark ominous sheen and suspenseful buildup of a thriller, but it reveals itself to be a surprising drama of sly emotional intelligence and subtle humor.
The narrative toggles between Arthur's recent evening with Laurel and his drive and accident. His scene with Laurel has a nice, easy rapport and affection, but actor Geoffrey Cantor also details Arthur's underlying fear of commitment. He's able to encapsulate a man who fears taking the next step, bringing a kind of remoteness to the characterization that hints at his aversion, but also his loneliness.
Sometimes juggling past and present in a short film can prove disorienting in a short running time, but the back-and-forth here builds suspense -- along with the beautifully moody night-time cinematography and isolated visual compositions. It also creates some storytelling sleight-of-hand. Will Arthur meet a dark end and come to regret his last words with Laurel? It certainly may seem so.
But then the film takes a turn into magical realism, as the voice of 411 enters into the story. 411 isn't just a recording, but a full-on character, brought to life by the superb F. Murray Abraham. Thanks to the Oscar winner's mercurial talents (and excellent dialogue), 411 is both all-knowing, sarcastic, wise, darkly teasing and ominous -- somewhere between an older father figure, a mysterious supernatural entity and God.
With 411's help, Arthur begins to put together the former disconnected parts of himself, unearthing the source of his great pain and ambivalence. Over the course of this one fateful night, he finally owns up to his desires and summons up the courage to take a risk in life. Arthur's ending ultimately makes 411 not just a beautifully crafted piece of genre filmmaking, but a parable for emotional growth: examining the past, connecting it to the present and being brave enough to move forward into an uncertain future. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน

The ringing at the end. That was your signal. In fact it was a signal to all the viewers. The voice on the phone was just his conscience. The ringing in the end meant for us to have the same deep conversation with our conscience.

@@Mayhzon Well, it isn't easy to make an analogy for what it's like to have your ability to trust other people ruined on such a visceral level, but imagine that you woke up in a deep daze and while reaching for something in a cabinet, accidentally put your hand on a searing hot stove top with basically all your body weight on it. Think about just how real that lesson would be.
Now imagine the stove is people and the damage is dozens of times as severe.
At that point, the fear of abandonment is like the fear of being burned by the stove. It's not really a problem because you simply don't put your hand on the stove anymore.
To the second question, that just depends on where your breaking point is.

I'm a female but I identify with this man sooo much. Early abandonment affects you forever, its a constant struggle to stay connected to anyone.
You can identify with someone no matter what they are. We all share similar experiences and emotions at some point in time. After all we're all human. And unfortunately, abandonment just seems to be on the rise.
Until a narcissist spots you from a mile away and you are still young and naive and fall for tactics, then get entwined in their personal hell. After all of that, I find myself definitely identifying with your statement. It sucks having to be suspicious that everyone is going to be a user and a taker because your family was so good at lying and manipulation your entire life. But I will take peace and quiet any day of the week instead of that nightmare.

@@erdelegy Hi Graham, That is an impressive and well thought out response. You have experienced a horrific tragedy and I can see how it would send you on the path you are on. Loneliness is a difficult choice to make for oneself. You make a good point about being lonely while in a relationship is worse than being lonely while being alone. Two things happened recently that really scare me. They are both health related…. The first is when I recently attended the funeral of my friend’s husband. During his illness, she was completely devoted to him and their relationship strengthened. She took care of him and cared about him as she did so. So, at the funeral, I couldn’t help but to wonder what my life would have been in comparison. The other situation is very similar. I just learned that one of my girlfriends has liver cancer and was given days to live. Her significant other of over 10 years is handling everything for her. So, when I compare myself to these two situations, I don’t have to do a lot of guessing. My health has deteriorated in recent years. If I can’t get myself to my doctor’s appointment, then I’m unable to go and I must cancel. Some days I can hardly breathe and, as a result, I am unable to function. As a result, I’m unable to fix myself something to eat or drink. I’m unable to do laundry or clean my house as frequently as I would like. So, the bottom line is that being alone is more than just being lonely. It means facing all of life’s challenges alone, and having no one to count on.
Im 40, i am afraid of rejection, but my relationships were not short and i have 3 kids.
It is still doable.
Oh yeah, i am also a worst overthinker i know of.

I'm not making any predictions on the success or failure of his relationship with Laurel but I do predict he'll get a ton of money from Audi when he sues them for airbag failure.

Wow. This one was pretty powerful. No one wants to be hurt, but the phone was right, its something we all have to risk happening because theres not much out there that is more important than finding someone to share our lives with. Benjamin Franklin...... it is the man and woman united that makes the complete human being. A single has not nearly the value he would have in that state of union. He is an incomplete animal. He resembles the odd half of a pair of scissors. I love that quote! We are never as good as we can be if we are by ourselves. Life needs to be shared, it needs to be enjoyed, the easiest way to do so is with at least one other person.
I think fear of being single, and incomplete is a bigger issue. Having a mutually symbiotic, loving relationship is ideal, but no one is incomplete when single. Some of us can, and do find peace, joy and contentment, and we do enjoy our own company.

Nope, the single person has absolutely just as much value if not more. Single folks have done much to help society by way of inventions, writings, etc. Don't have to be with someone to have value. Anyone who thinks another person "completes" them is weak.
I like this one a lot, it resonates deeply with me in that I too had a lifelong fear of commitment . I believed I had to do the leaving before anyone could ever even dream of wanting to walk away from me.
Took me a lot of soul searching heartache until I was 40 to realise what I was doing , and once I accepted that love was just another risk I went for it!
I have spent the past 10 years , since that time of awakening & maturing , trying to make my current relationship work , so far very successfully!
Fear of abandonment certainly is very real and very damaging, parents need to think hard about what they do to the children left behind in broken homes.
I have that fear of commitment too. I still haven't been in any relationship, not even tried actually. But, I feel maybe staying along throughout might ultimately make me very depressed.

My mother abandoned me when I was three. I'm now 63. I have yet to form a lasting relationship, even with friends.

My childhood was miserable! Much worse than that...but, I pray everyone is loved by their mom's dad's! Mine didn't love me, but I love the living mess out of my kids! It is so much fun being a mom! I get to love and hug my daughters. Encourage them! My husband, their dad, is wonderful! God is amazing!!! The things I have control over in my life are AWESOME!!! I am so grateful for every little and big thing that God provides!!! This video, btw, was fantastic!!! Poor little boy left in the woods! Now he can be his own man. Well, God bless everyone! There is a scientific study about this behaviour, it’s called “Avoidant attachment style”. Other humans like the woman in this film may be secure or avoidant. I learnt about this in the book “Attached” by Amir Levine. I recommend this for anyone that either identifies with this fear or has dated someone that avoids commitment.
Moral of the story, if there is an animal on the road in front of you, use your brakes, don't swerve. It's better to possibly kill the animal than wreck your car and possibly hurt your self.
Also DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE.

Balding, middle-aged man w beard is afraid of committing to a pioneering, gorgeous woman because of his fear of abandonment. I loathed that pretentious character and hope that the final call was a warning not to get in the tow truck going straight to hell.

Hears what really happened: First he died in the car crash Next: the payphone was really God not a random dude and lastly: the tow truck was his ride to the after life. Also it did not take his car .
If what you stated was correct. Why did the voice remind of his mom? Why did the voice say that it was bumped in the head and he will be fine? Why telling him to take a risk if he is already dead? Your reading to the story is a good one but I don't think it is the correct one. To answer the statement you made about why the town truck did not take is the car is simple. After the accident he had to walk to find the payphone, therefore the car is not by the payphone and the town truck has to get him at the payphone then drive to the accident location.

It's symbolic of the way that interaction with the subconscious works. It is also symbolic of where we store the hidden and disowned parts of our consciousness. We seldom come into conscious contact with these deep, dark, cavernous parts of the psyche. We know that when a time comes where we do interact with these deep areas of our psyche, it will not be a care free walk in the park. Rather, it will be a heavy experience.
It is typical in man's storytelling to render the dark unexplored parts of the psyche in a setting that is mysterious, foreboding or seemingly inappropriate (or in more colloquial speech "sketchy"). We see this symbolism as Luke Skywalker chooses to enter the cave on Dagobeh, we see it again when Jonah is swallowed by the whale and must stay in the belly of the beast for a time.

In the opening scene, the soundtrack is Erik Satie's first Gnossienne. It's quite apropos for the theme of this film, i.e. perhaps a reference to spiritual knowledge, and perhaps how it can lend personal enlightenment. There's an uncanny resemblance between Laurel and Arthur's mother; we can imagine the latter's words - "You stay here, and think about what you've done" - coming out of Laurel's mouth, as Arthur returns to her, both admonishing him for running off and pleading for him to stay.
How much pain do we inflict upon ourselves daily? And upon others? Life is pain. Well made film with a meaningful story. Thank you.

Amazing. So true. I see that I left a comment here 3 years ago saying that this is my life story. Afraid. And it’s STILL true. Afraid. I’m old and I’ll die alone. Alone and lonely and scared. Scared of being alone and scared of taking a chance. For me, my father left us when I was 3. My mother kicked me out and I was homeless at 14. My husband tried to kill me when I was pregnant with our son. Can this amount of damage ever be repaired and a person can become whole?

That's me. I'm too old now and married once for 10 years. Had too many relationships and each one never went more than 6 months. Last time I fell in love and opened my heart to her, she left me.
