  • Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 and was abandoned in the mid-1890s after silver lost its value. The town that once gave miners a good living lost its hustle and became a “ghost town.”
Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950’s architecturally restoring all but the five original buildings to look as they did in the 1880’s. Calico received State Historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California’s Silver Rush Ghost Town.
Today, Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system, which is visited by people from across the country and from all over the world. Along with its history and attractions, Calico Ghost Town has shops, restaurants and offers camping, hiking and off-roading.

Most people don't know about wall street ( the lower parking lot) I loved the tram when I was a kid. I Remember Mrs.lane. that was in 1960 I was 5years old

The lower lot and the tram is what I remember most about Calico when I was a kid. We would camp at the KOA right off of the freeway and spend the day at Calico. I wish the tram would be restored. Probably a safety or OSHA hazard now.

Dang! The last time I was there, everything was dirt. The parking lot was dirt and the Main street was dirt as well. It's been a long time since I've been there. Dang! I think I left myself open for a joke. Great Video! Love the direction you are going with the channel.

There are a bunch of shops to go into as well. I didn't show those. Plus, the restaurants weren't open, as the crowd was very light. Right down the street is Peggy Sue's Diner (right off the 15 - same exit). It's a fun 50s diner, owned by former Knott's employees!

I'll have to disagree. My parents took me there back in the 70s and there was nothing restored about it. Maybe it's happened more recently, but no, Mr. Knott did not do that up into the 70's at least. It didn't look like anything it does now, and there were only two people there. And only about two buildings were open, which they were trying to sell things out of. The rest of the town was in shambles and there wasn't a whole lot to look at.

I'm not sure when the gift shops opened, but Walter Knott donated Calico to San Bernardino County, and it became a County Regional Park then after restoration. The tram ride to the top from the parking lot and the shops and mine tour were there when I visited as a kid in the early 80s.

Did you go to Eddie's World while you were out there? Or maybe Peggy Sue's?

Both! (and other places). Video will be up tomorrow or Sunday! It's crazy long and I'm trying to cut it down.
