    Very rarely do you find a video that's 100% what you needed. For me, this video was it. On the other hand, it just pushed me towards getting the 99 Classics and put a bigger hole in my wallet.

    I was going to get the Neo’s to save that hundo as most people said they sounded same as Classics, with a bit more bass just as you said. My ears heard quite a difference though; a smoother, warmer, buttery sound from the Classics which is right up my alley- and the mids sounded recessed in the Neo’s. Now I will read others comments to see if I have a clue what I’m talking about..

      @@charlesgoldt7943 Agreed! Although if I’m honest I don’t pull out the Classics as much now. I also have Sennheiser 458’s and Hifiman XS. The Classics are in 3rd place for sound, they are just a bit veiled compared to the others. Way better looking and super comfortable though (especially compared to the Hifiman’s), nice for long listening sessions. I still like them and still use them to this day.

      Did you notice the decay of the bass between the 2? To me the classics bass sounded better overall. The neo seemed to have a very short decay on the bass. Like it didn't have any of the sound after the initial hit of the note as opposed to the natural harmonic quality that it should have had

    People hear things a lot differently so when I’m one of the few to say I definitely prefer the neos over the classics. I like the classics and how wide they feel but I like the much closed in kinda sound that feels so sharp.

    Hi Ron and a big thanks for the demo! It’s funny though how people perceive the opposite. It probably depends on our headphones used to listen to those two headphones. I in AWWH with the Classic wooden cup but can’t help finding the Neo more neutral and linear. Classics sound richer and more natural but a little more boxed. The Neo are more airy while the soundstage seems flat. Depth is more obvious with the Classic. So, the « it’s up to you to decide » is very clever while not helpful 😜 cause right now I’m very confused on which one I would prefer! 🤪

  • @Unbrutal_Rawr
    @Unbrutal_Rawr ปีที่แล้ว +11

    This sounds more like variation in position than variation in the actual headphones. You can actually see that the Classics are seated lower (which tends to give a wider and more muffled sound) than the Neos, which are visibly higher. Most headphones change their sound quite a bit dependign on positon - the reader can check this with their own headphones. You might want to try the methodology of doing several recordings of the same headphone positioned differently on the dummy head - I'm almost certain you'll find the differences to be comparable to the one in this video.

    Ron great video and I liked the comparisons. You'll have to do more; great job. I agree, the mids seem to be a bit more forward & up front and tad bit brighter on the neo's. The Neo's have a midbass and upper midrange boost that gives a slight V curve while the Classic's sound more linear if tilted downward. I also get a better sense of space with the Classic's. As you know my Grado's have a very linear midrange but rather forward treble. I'm curious whether their new X-series drivers address that longstanding issue.

  • @redminute6605
    @redminute6605 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I hear that the Neo's lost some resolution in the higher tons, when the classics on the other hands sound clearer, but are less body'ed... You can hear the Neo's prevalent bass extension, except it being just more present but that's an expected outcome.
    I prefer the classics, but I don't feel like spending that much on any kind of headphone, even though I really appreciate the audio quality.

    The Neos sound brighter/more detailed, the Classics sound smoother and warmer. Neos seem to have more upper mids and treble, Classics seem to have more even mids and slightly recessed treble. Originally I thought the Neos were better bc of the treble but the mids just aren't as good. I imagine the Classics could sound dull depending on the recording, but on well mixed stuff they'd probably sound better.

    Have a pair of Aeolus from ZMF. First great pair of cans I've had and was blown away by the balance. They're open back so I was very curious about how the bass would hold up. I found very quickly what warmth really meant. The best description of the sound I can give is "simply beautiful." Powerful and full, but soft and give your ears room to breathe with the open back. GORGEOUS design as well. Solid build.
    Thanks for sharing listening samples of another couple pairs. Much appreciated 🤘

  • @quinnobi42

    What I find interesting is the different ways people describe these headphones. Audiophiles and that sort of group tend to say that they have a lot of bass; even too much bass, and not very well defined highs. Everyone else who isn't really an audiophile says they are a little bassy, but very warm and relaxed. I think I shall prefer the opinion of the non-audiophiles, because I'm not an audiophile and therefore what the non-audiophiles say they sound like is probably going to be more accurate to how I hear them. I'm saving up for a pair of Classics and I can't wait to get them!

    • @ROCKSTAR3291
      @ROCKSTAR3291 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Audiophiles tend to listen for hours everyday so the bass can be fatiguing for them, that's why they tend to like more neutral headphones for their long listening sessions. Most people don't use their headphones for that long, so the bass isn't a problem. It depends on your music taste too. The Meze 99 is incredibly smooth when the music doesn't have a lot of bass.

    • @quinnobi42
      @quinnobi42 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ROCKSTAR3291 Funny that you would comment on this. I did get a pair of 99 Classics and have had them for several months now. I got an EQ program so I get extra-neutral sound, but I will turn it off for gaming when I want the extra bass punch. It is very interesting, actually, how much the EQ changes the bass. With it turned off, I can immediately notice the extra bass, and I've actually noticed that I'm able to tell when I've left the EQ off because stuff sounds too bassy.

    Seeing the Neo's on John Darko's channel before seeing you waring them in your Danny R. conversation and compairing them against the lifeless Sony XM-1000 yada yadas also made them even more enjoyable. As did all my musical choices. Now, no thanks to you, l'm going for the Classic's. If only finding the rest of the audio equipment I long for with a ceiling budget of $2500 for my tiny room was as easy. Sadly, no room for vynal, however CD's and Streaming work. The Search Continues. I do have one question though have you had any micro harmonic issues. I bought an after market OFC supposedly Pro cable set and noticed excess harmonics through the cable whenever it rubbed anything and noticed switching back to stock eliminated most, but not all of it. I also wonder if its due to my laptop.

    I do own the Neo's but never had an opportunity comparing them to the Classics. My main (and perhaps only) issue with the Neo's is the "boomy" mid-bass which seems not to be as pronounced on the Classics in your recordings. I have to EQ the Neo's because of that. Seems Classics would suit better my taste. Otherwise the 99's remain the only closed backs in my collection because of how "open" they sound when comparing them to other closed backs. And surely, because of how they look like, I admit...

    Late comer after just stumbling on these headphones. Bigger soundstage/more spatial on the Classic which I think is why the Neo perceives to have more bass, so much more is in the centre of your head versus immersed in it with the Classics. Neo to me would be more a 'studio' can while Classic would be a musical can.

    The neos sound inferior - the classics are much clearer more detailed and less 'muffled' sounding in the mids.
